      This is facts, y'all. A lot of people say Ferris isn't a good person, but he literally saved his friend's life preemptively by taking the day off and also in the swimming pool. At the end of the day, he's just a really crafty, witty, good guy.

    Full Disclosure: I went to film school in the early "80's". My first job was as a "production assistant" on this movie. John Hughes had most of the actors improvise alot of dialog. That's probably why some scenes seemed disjointed. Also that parade was real. No extra's. They just got permission from the city of Chicago and shot most of those scenes with a hand held camera using real people in the parade, (including the construction workers, etc..) After, I was one of the people running around chasing down random people sign releases for the movie. One last factoid & I'll shut up.... The reason Ferris's sister looked familiar to you is because that was a young Jennifer Grey, the one from "Dirty Dancing" with Patrick Swayze.

    This is actually my all-time favorite movie. To appreciate these 80s teen movies better, you kind of had to grow up around that same timeframe. John Hughes really spoke to my generation (aka Gen X), so we embraced his movies because we could relate to them so well.

    • @derred723
      @derred723 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think it very much helps to have the context. Take breakfast club. it was seminal because it was one of the first movies for the Gen X generation that openly talked about suicide, the pressure to be pretty or perfect, the pressure on guys to fit a standard of masculinity, the child abuse, bullying, suburban kids bringing weapons to school. I related to it in I had a kid pull his gun on me in my high school parking lot. But i surely never considered things like the burden of trying to live up to any standard of perfection Molly Ringwald's character did. And additionally i think we all knew those characters. The athlete, pretty girl, the girls that world all black and seemed kinda messy and weird, the stoner kid that got in trouble alot, the nerdy kid. I think when the era was latchkey kids, aids, crack addict parents, drive by shootings and gang violence against a back drop of 80s corporate wealth and Reaganomics that never trickled down to the masses it was meaningful to even have someone acknowledge all the kids that to different degrees, were growing up with a level of trauma, from mild to life threatening.

      A real 250 GT California Spyder was used for close-up shots , a real one was sold in 2008 price was over $10 mil , that was James Coburn's Ferrari .
      They had 3 cars build to the movie , one just a shell to crash it , 2nd was manual and 3rd automatic , when "Ferris" could not drive with a manual .

      Interesting. Imagine saying to someone "You may have the opinion that Ferris Bueller is a bad movie, but it isn't." Opinions aren't based on fact or knowledge, they're based on individual views or judgments. Your "the sky is made of buttermilk" nonsense isn't an opinion; it's an incorrect contradiction of a fact. As far as Cameron goes, Ferris was really trying to help his friend break out of his shell and build up some self confidence and self respect. Remember what Ferris says, "he's going to marry the first girl he lays" and she won't respect him because he'll wind up kissing her ass all the time. Cameron's willingness to take the heat for the car really shows some growth for him.

      Judd Nelson in Breakfast Club -> Charlie Sheen, Ferris house-hacks -> Home Alone house-hacks, John Candy & Steve Martin in Planes Trains & Automobiles -> at least half a dozen snob-vs-slob comedies in every possible scenario.

    11:28 John Hughes said in the Director's Commentary for the DVD release (before he passed away) that when Cameron looks into the abstract painting and the closer the camera focuses into it the dots become even more and more abstract was meant to show Cameron realizing how disconnected he was from his own life living under the thumb of his controlling father. A deleted scene at the police station with the bad boy Jeanie meets when the mother comes to collect her reveals that he used to be friends with Ferris, leaving it heavily suggested that Ferris really did everything for Cameron to help snap him out of his melancholy.

      I appreciate her honesty, too, but I also think sometimes there are so many movies reacted to that she does not have enough time to do just a little research on the movie and its place as an iconic movie. She keeps calling it so Home Alone, but Home Alone was like 5 years later. Part of the reason we liked movies is because we understood the cultural context. I guess I wish more reactors would put some work into the context. I know Ashleigh probably does not want to spoil it, but at the same time, it ruins the possibility of her liking the movie more. I guess I am just disappointed when I see someone sort of reactively move through a reaction scene by scene without really understanding the larger themes.

    It's a little known fact that in some deleted scenes Ferris reveals that he's skipped school because Cameron hasn't been going to school due to depression. His plan is to show Cameron how fun life is by having a great time out on the town for a day to fix the depression. That's why they were at the art museum, baseball game, in parade, and dinning at a swanky restaurant. Ferris is hard on Cameron because Ferris ignored the depression signs of his other BFF, who dropped out of school and became a criminal and drug addict. Ferris hated himself for not helping his friend when he could. His other friend is played by Charlie Sheen who got arrested and was sitting with Jeanie at the cop shop. Ferris can't stand the idea of Cameron ending up like Charlie.

      I was actually expecting her to not like it cuz she didn't like Breakfast Club. It's hard to watch teen movies when you're an adult. Especially silly, 80s, John Hughes teen movies. So she should pass on 16 Candles- that movie is too rapey for her. Weird Science can be skipped... Again, a little too misogynistic for her. She may like Some Kind of Wonderful and Pretty in Pink though. They're a little deeper and less silly

  • @LogicalNiko
    @LogicalNiko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Don’t feel bad for not relating to the John Hughes films, this period was his ode to both Chicago and coming of age teenage transition in the suburban middle class life of the late 70s to mid-80s. He was one of the first directors speaking to and capturing Generation X “in-between” culture/identity struggles. This is also in a time where there were no media outlets for relating to each other (tv neglected this period until MTV, positioning mostly for the generations before and after). So the disconnect you see is because this was not answering your longing for validation/recognition at the time as it was originally for many of us; and those that do not see that do not yet understand that each generations experiences, while relevant, will latch on to different items in culture as their ‘foundational’ methods of relating to each other. The keys to judging such a film from outside the perspective of pure personal enjoyment is to first understand and relate to the intended audience; but Ashley is not a critic, she provides a alternative perspective to relive moments of fist experiences vicariously.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's so much more to the film than just speaking to one generation. Ben Stein loves the film and, even though he was in it, he has a lot more good to say about it than just his part. And he certainly wasn't part of the teen generation then. It's a very funny and very deep movie. It's got an underlying, universal theme of people wanting to break free of society's restrictive, mind-numbing rules and regulations and enjoy free thought and new experiences. So if someone is watching the film and only thinking about "Clear Eyes" eyedrops and Home Alone, they're doing it wrong. This reaction didn't spend one second asking anything about what the film meant.

    In the eighties there were two distinct groups of students, the future doctors and lawyers , and the people who just didn't do well in school. Ferris was in that small group of people who were smart enough to fit in the first group while at the same time able to see that youth is a time to live and enjoy life - a brief window. The technology, the computers, the keyboard, all very new was a wild thing to see. And of course there was Mia and Jennifer. Can't forget the car. Movies were a completely different experience for our generation, having to wait till the weekend to get a lift to the video rental store, hoping they have a copy available, having to rewind it first because the last person didnt , then watching it as many time as you could in the 48 hours you have it without the parents going mad because you only had one television in the living room, having to take the video back and paying a fine if it's late..
