I cannot stress how many times, over the past many decades, I've told people "I want my $2," and they look at me clueless. This was a great movie that fit a certain niche back in the day. It's considered John Cusack's best teen film by most, but I always preferred "One Crazy Summer."

"One Crazy Summer" is a movie with a similar vibe. Same director and some of the same cast, but a lot more characters overall. It's got Demi Moore (Ghost)
    Joel Murray (Bill's little brother)
Niedermayer (Animal House) and several others. You can definitely tell they had more money to make it. In my opinion it is even more zany than this one. Love them both equally.

I was a teenager during the 80's and I LOVED this film when it came out. It was a regular rental for me. It spoke to me at the time. It stood out among the large field of teen movies of the decade with it's cartoony sense of humor. Sure, it's not aged perfectly, but I still love it. That soundtrack is one of my favorite. Thanks for not breaking my heart. I've always loved this movie more than other 80s comedies because of all of the little side pieces. It was way funnier for those who grew up in the late 70s and 80s because Howard Cosell was a staple due to him hosting so many sports events, and his cadence and voice were iconic for those decades. It's actually a very effective psychic disincentive. Laugh like it's just the funniest thing you've ever heard and you can't help yourself. do it every time you see the person who tried to insult you. Watch them deflate and they will never try it again. It's a great way to battle verbal abuse, it makes them the butt of their own joke.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up in the 80's I was still a kid, but enjoyed it. A simple time in movies, when the point was to entertain, without being so serious or having to be molded in some shape of realism. When actors and actresses had discipline, when each character felt like a unique character, instead of today where it seems like everyone plays the same character for every part.
This movie makes me think of other movies, that are not all so similar.
People talked about Curtis Young and the movie he comes from, "Revenge of the Nerds"
His boss at the hamburger place, and the guy he ran into a few times is also Porky from the movie "Porky's"
    Revenge of the Nerds

Better Off Dead is one of my two favorite movies from growing up in the 1980s. (My other favorite is Johnny Dangerously, also a must-watch for you, Ashleigh!) I can pretty much recite the entire movie. Whenever my sister and I visit, we reference the movie in our conversations without even a thought.
The two brothers in the car who kept racing Lane were dressed in the yellow/gold jackets of ABC Sports broadcasters (from the days before ESPN began to dominate). The brother on the PA loudspeaker was doing an imitation of iconic sportscaster Howard Cosell, who anyone from the seventies and eighties would know because of his unmistakable voice.

Watched this with a group of friends on VHS pretty much every weekend in 1988. I love the different types of animation Savage Steve Holland employs in the film. The whole thing is zany, creative, and damned funny. Cusack and Holland teamed up again to make ONE CRAZY SUMMER which is not as strong but has its moments. Moving forward, I totally recommend John Cusack in HIGH FIDELITY. He is really terrific in it, though the film is better known for catapulting Jack Black out of supporting roles and into bona fide stardom.
Interesting that you mentioned John Hughes because John Cusack had a small role in Hughes' 1984 film SIXTEEN CANDLES along with his sister Joan Cusack who, as far as I'm concerned, totally steals the movie without even trying. Interestingly, SIXTEEN CANDLES feels a lot like BETTER OFF DEAD as they both share an episodic skit quality that is woven into their respective narratives. BTW, John and Joan Cusack appeared together in HIGH FIDELITY.

I've seen this movie about 30 times. Cusack was a breakout comedy star from the 80s. The guy who plays the burger joint boss is Porky from the iconic film "Porky's". There is a knock-off sequel of this film called "One Crazy Summer" which was actress Demi Moore's first film. The guy who plays his druggy friend basically plays the exact same character in "Revenge of the Nerds" The family dad was on the hit TV show "M.A.S.H". It says something for how well loved Better Off Dead is that they reused the characters in other films. Yuji Okumoto, who played the Asian sports announcer (Howard Cosell voice), starred as the villain in "The Karate Kid 2". It's ironic because in real life Yuji is a hilarious jokester. I found your review to be outstanding and I look forward to the next. Here are 3 films you might check out. #1 Johnny Dangerously #2 Mr. Mom #3 Wildcats

OMG! No one has done this movie yet(to my knowledge). I absolutely LOVE this movie for it's 80s cheeziness.
No, John Cusak was not Ferris Beuller. However, he has gone on to do some really good roles as he got older. Curtis Armstrong always seems to play a similar type of character(He was in Revenge of the Nerds as "Booger").
Oh, and the "paper boy" actually has really GOOD aim. He intended to bust out those windows. He's such a little asshole, but I love him in this!
6:30 - The two Asian guys are lesser antagonists in this movie. The funniest part is that the one talking like Howard Cossell, was the main antagonist to Ralph Macchio in Karate Kid II. He also had a part in another 80s cheese-fest of a movie called "Real Genius"(which I REALLY SUPER HIGHLY RECOMMEND!)
7:55 - Ashleigh, you and I have something in common at this moment: We both have a calico in our lap. Not even kidding. You have Beans, I have Sneaky.
13:42 - That mailman.... I had forgotten he was in this movie. You can see more of him in the Pauli Shore movie "Biodome". Recommend that rabbit hole(Pauli Shore movies).
14:16 - It was cheaper to live in the 80s.
19:55 - Actually, yes, we DID have soda in school. Although, we weren't allowed the fancy stuff like Coke/Pepsi..... we had RC Cola.
    And no, I'm NOT kidding.
Girl, I gotta tell you, there are SO many 80s comedies along this line. Meaning, "very silly", but in a really good way. Even still, there IS an underlying message that resonates with people(especially us Gen-Xers). In this case, there were several. With Lane, it was "be confident and believe in yourself", with Ricky it was "don't be a creepy bastard, and you will find your match", with Beth, it was "don't be so damned superficial or you'll never be happy".

The "Two Dollars" gag comes out of the Vaudeville era, an old gag called "Just Pay the Two Dollars". A guy gets fined $2 for a minor infraction in public (like, spitting on the floor of a train). He's all ready to grudgingly pay it, but the guy next to him is an attorney and insists on taking his case whether he likes it or not. The situation escalates to prison time for the hapless guy who just wanted to "Pay the two dollars," each time made worse by the attorney's interference.

Many of the people you remarked on in this movie are in these movies as well.
All are very popular 80's high school teen comedies with exception of Porky's. Although it was filmed in the 80's it took place in the 50's.

I was thinking about the movie nepotism with the ones you mention.
-- the burger joint owner/truck driver ... Played Porky in Porky's
-- Taylor Negron who played the Mailman in this movie was the pizza delivery guy in Fast Times...
-- E.G. Daily was the singer at the prom in this movie and she was a supporting character in Valley Girl...
-- In this movie, Diane Franklin (Monique) was the female lead in The Last American Virgin.
I've been thinking about The Last American Virgin as of late (that ending scene gets me every time...) but recently learned that its a remake of a 1978 Israeli movie name Lemon Popsicle (Eskimo Limon) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemon_Popsicle.

Finally! Glad you reviewed and enjoyed Better Off Dead!!!
After "Better Off Dead," there sort of became a tiny sub-genre of comedies where there are a weird assortment of characters who keep popping up at the worst possible moment. Bubble Boy is probably the funniest of these, (Not counting "Better Off Dead") I also enjoyed "It's a Guy Thing" and "Dude Where's my Car."
Movies like these have to be well written to work, or as you said, they end up too cheesy. (To be honest, "Dude Where's my Car" might have been on the wrong side of that 'Too Cheesy' Mendoza line. (But it still made the twelve-year-old in me laugh.)

I enjoy: “The subject is... is the mystery car. Which even as we speak darkens our domain under a moldy tarp. You do know the car of which I speak?
Let me refresh your memory. Cast your mind back. It's a crisp September morning. You borrowed $200 from me to purchase the car...mainly because your girlfriend Beth said it was...I believe the term was "tasty." Since then, that "tasty" car has slept in an auto cocoon on my front lawn.”

This is mine and my mom's favorite movie. "And to drink, Peru!" It's such a classic.
Another 80s classic you should react to is "Moving Violations" _..If_ you can find it.
And fun fact, Ricky is played by Dan Schneider. Who created the hit nickelodeon shows "Amanda show" "Drake and Josh" "Zoey101" "iCarly" and "Victorious"

One of my favorite movies. The comedy is just so bizarre and great! I completely agree about the amount of 80s, there's a LOT of 80s in it, but there's so much going on that works. And the humor is very unique to the movie. This was my first experience with humor that gets just absurd.

    Great reaction.
Another John Hughes movie I’d love you to react to is Sixteen Candles. John Cusack has a minor role and it’s stars Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall both from The Breakfast Club.
Also, please please please please please,
    React to True Lies.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold’s Schwarzenegger. Best action comedy of the 90s.
And a Must is The Fugitive with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones.

Diane Franklin plays Monique and she’s in one of my favorite T&A movies from the 80s called “The Last American Virgin”. It’s literally like 2 movies in one. The whole first part is the typical guys trying to get laid, but the nerdy main guy is secretly in love with this one girl. The second half is him and that girl and he’s helping her out of a jam that his best friend put her in and left her to deal with it alone. You think they are falling in love…man it has the best soundtrack too!! Diane is also in the first Bill & Ted movie as well.

This movie is a great father/daughter movie. When I first heard you were presenting it I thought, “oh man, she going to hate it, won’t get the jokes because it’s too weird”, but hell no you loved it. Monique’s command of English was a great spin and Rickey’s balloon problem was hilarious.

The singer at the dance was Elizabeth Daily, she was in a bunch of 80's movies ('No Small Affair', 'Valley Girl') and was best known as the voice of Tommy on Rugrats. The actress who played Beth also played the girlfriend of Judge Reinhart's character in 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High.' The gal who played the french girl also starred in 'That Last American Virgin,' which probably has the most crushing ending of any 80's teen movie. To the point where she goes out of her way to make it right at fan conventions.
