St Helena Airport Runway Designator Change Feb 2022

  • Runway designators at St Helena Airport were changed in Feb 2022 from 20 & 02, to 19 & 01. This included removing and repainting the large numbers on the runway itself and changing the designator signage on the taxiways.
    St Helena Airport’s CEO and Accountable Manager, Gwyneth Howell, gives an overview of the work being undertaken, and the CNS Manager, Marten Fourie, leads the team tasked with sandblasting away the old numbers and painting on the new designators.
    This has come about because the earth's magnetic field is constantly changing, and while large-scale changes, such as a complete reversal of the magnetic field, happen over several thousand years, smaller changes over shorter periods affect all forms of navigation. In aviation, Earth's changing magnetic field affects airport operations and causes runway names to change.
    A film by Darrin & Sharon Henry.

      Thanks Phil, much appreciated 👍 it's been a privilege as photographers & filmmakers over the years to see these types of things that happen away from public view. Being able to share the stories in this way so everyone can appreciate the work has really been a wonderful thing. 😊 Thanks again.

    I have been very interested in Saint Helena for the last year. I found and reviewed all the blogs about him, I recognize his streets, people. And I just can’t understand why I am a resident of Kyiv, a 4-million city in Europe, so attracted by this peace and remoteness. But on February 22, Russia attacked my country, it bombs our cities with cluster and vacuum bombs, we are sitting in bomb shelters. And I realized that my intuition attracted me to the island. It will always be a corner of peace in the world. Take care of him. It is a pity that I did not believe my intuition and did not go to this corner of paradise.

      Hi Артем Хемингуэй, this little corner of paradise is thinking about your people and your country at this terrible time. We are hoping and praying for a peaceful resolution as soon as possible.
      We hope you get to visit St Helena one day and we also look forward to one day being able to visit Ukraine.
      Stay strong and stay safe.
      Love & best wishes from St Helena. 💓💓

      Keep your island vision in your mind and someday you’ll go there and look across the ocean from a hilltop, and feel the warm ocean breeze in your face. You can smell the ocean anytime you close your eyes, remember that always.

      Hi Rogerio, nice to hear from you 👍yes, we are blessed to call such a place home. It helps the island is so small, approx 4,200 people, so it's like one big family, most people know each other in some way.
      Hope you do get to visit one day. Visit travelsthelena.com/ for accommodation options and also useful information about travel to the island.
      The aircraft that flies to St Helena is Brazilian made, the Embraer E190.
      Best wishes from St Helena 😊

    Interesting watching how other countries handle airfield markings. I ran the marking operation at a US hub airport until i retired. We also had to do a complete designator change and my boss wanted to do an overlay like you did, that was instantly vetoed. We did a complete removal using ultra hi pressure water blasting. In the US we are not allowed to use rollers and hand toss beads. Your changeover looks great, congrats.

      Ah, that's really interesting feedback, thanks @mikef6307 👍 Can imagine how interesting it is for aviation folk to see how colleagues around the world take a different approach to similar tasks. We were absolutely fascinated making this film, first time we'd ever heard this was even a thing!

      Barry, it looks like you beat me to the apparel for my future paradise island. I have been waiting like you to get down there and have been held up by covid. I discovered that very unique beautiful place back in early 2016 when I was searching for a get-a-way destination prior to the election. I keep telling the Henrys that their videos are good enough for PBS and the BBC. From Bill in Jackson, Ms. K5EYS ( ham radio call )

    Interesting. Greetings from South Africa. Even though your flights depart from here, it is actually much cheaper for us to visit Mauritius or Seychelles. Despite it being visa free for us, the additional cost on arrivals like ridiculous insurance costs, and some of the costs associated with the island make it near impossible for us as average citizens to visit it. But maybe someday, that will change. For now, we will visit it virtually.

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the cost of airfares is certainly not helpful.
      We are ever hopeful that lower cost tickets might be possible one day and then more people like yourself will be able to visit 😊
      In the meantime, Mauritius or Seychelles sound amazing also! Have a great time.

    I prefer 19 - 01 over 20 - 02. An US Bangla (Bangladesh) Dash-8 had crashed in Kathmandu Nepal on Mar 12, 2018, and initially there were some confusion over runway 20 or 02; which the plane was cleared to land on (most likely didn't play any role though).

    I don't get it. On racetracks there is better grip when the rubber melts to the surface.

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting thought Chris, will have to let someone else with a better understanding of these things answer.
      What we can say is the runway on St Helena is concrete and the surface is grooved, as you may have seen in this film. The Embraer test pilot, in 2016, had high praise for the surface which he said "makes the brake connection very nice, even if you have light showers or rain."
      Thanks for the comment and checking out the video.
      Cheers 😊

      Cool, thanks for that 👍 - we did look up the whole topic when making this film and was amazed to learn the magnetic fields around the globe were not uniform as we had imagined they would be, but rather, more like the swirling patterns you see with weather maps. 😃 such a fascinating little planet we live on!
