The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 3 ก.ค. 2023
- Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.
For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

Had a great time doing the voiceover - now I need to visit Saint Helena!
Sounds like a good plan Richard 👍 we will give you the island tour, outside of Jamestown!! 📷🚗😊
And what a great voice you have! 💯
! @infiad1275 Thank you so much!
Done such a good job that I honestly would have thought of you as being a local, didn't sound like you were just reading a script but actually knew what you were talking about.
@@TrystaneTheBlack Thank you so much - that's very kind of you!
I am from South africa and visited St Helena in 1986 . Stayed for 8 weeks and loved it.
Wow, that's great to hear, Catharina 👍cheers 😊
My Dad was from Jamestown. Harry Crowie. He moved to the UK in the 60s . I'm proud of my connection to it.
Hi @confused6816, that's great to hear 👍
The Crowie name, you will be pleased to know, is still quite prominent on St Helena, listed 45 times in the current telephone directory 😊
Thanks for dropping by the channel.
Missing St. Helena. One of the most unforgetable places I've been.
Sounds like a return visit will have to be arranged some day, Noel 😊 hope we're here to go exploring with you next time. 👌
I was there in 1994. It had no airstrip then so was very isolated and in a bit of a time warp - no tv, no radio, no phones. The mail ship every two weeks and yachties was the only contact with the outside world.
Hey Steve, you will be interested to know that just a few days ago, on 1 Oct 2023, the island was connected to a brand new undersea, fibre-optic cable, enabling islanders to enjoy unlimited broadband packages for the first time!
Yes, beneath the bonnet, so to speak, lots of change over the last 30 years, although, in many ways at surface level, not much has changed at all 😊 You will have to come back and see it again for yourself 😀
Thanks for stopping by and your comment👍
Went there many times in the early 70,s when I was crew on the Good Hope Castle never got ashore until I had an accident onboard which led to me being hospitalised and was well cared for and looked after for which I will be always grateful ,lovely place and people
Hi Kenneth, good to hear of your positive experience on St Helena back then 👍
Passing ocean traffic is a lot less nowadays, however, we still have vessels calling in from time to time to drop off crew members in need of medical attention. Of course, the airport now makes it easier again for them to get back home afterwards, which is even better.
Thanks for visiting our channel and sharing your story 😊
@@whatthesaintsdidnext Yes shipping probably a lot less these days but heavier goods ,machinery, cars etc will still come by sea I guess plus tankers and the occasional cruise liner
@@kennethgrindrod6438 that's right 👍a small amount of cargo comes on the plane but mostly small packages. Probably 99% of the island's imports come by a small cargo vessel that shuttles between here and South Africa or Namibia. We get about 6 or 7 cruise ships calling per year, mostly just day visits as they change hemispheres for their new seasons. Yachting season can be busy.
@@whatthesaintsdidnext When on the Good Hope Castle we used to run the Saints back and forth to Ascension for work ,how to they go about that now is there a flight what goes for them now?
@@kennethgrindrod6438 yes. Flights to St Helena Airport are operated by Airlink from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This is a weekly service with a monthly inter-island flight to Ascension Island. Flight time one-way usually about 1hr 45mins.
Beautiful. I just hope St Helena keeps it's identity over the coming decades and keeps the big corporate companies at arms length. Same goes for holiday homes / landlords and property developers - keep them as far away as possible and keep things affordable for the locals ❤
Hey Stephen, thanks for dropping by and those thoughts. ❤️ You're not alone, many others have expressed similar.
It is a challenge trying to retain and appreciate within those elements of what makes the island so special, while balancing the need to develop the island in certain areas. Good people always needed 😊
Where can one stay when visiting Jamestown?
Hi Freddie, there are a number of options on Travel St Helena: travelsthelena.com/
For hotels, there's The Consulate and Mantis. For Self-catering and B&B, check out Wellington House, Fowlers' Town Houses, Maldivia Lodge, The Gazebo and Cornerstone flats. We will also have a new self-catering property in Brewery Yard, Jamestown, listing soon.
Well there could be new property built somewhere else in St. Helena that wouldn’t affect anyone, it’s not particularly densely populated
and muslims too, they tend to ruin and change places as they will when they arrive. From being harmless to madness once there is sufficient population. I love how this city and place looks, keep it original.
I live in south africa, would love to retire on st Helena....its just so remote and beautiful....and I love Jonathan 🐢❤️💜
Hey Sylvia, thanks for the comment.
Must admit, sometimes with all the craziness going on in the world, it's nice to live in a place where the biggest worry of the week is not missing the Thursday vegetable delivery!
You may not have the remoteness, but your country is quite stunning. We've not seen a lot, but loved what we have experienced so far.
Hope you get to visit us one day at least 😊if not retire.

I have always felt that if ANY place on Earth can lay claim to the word "paradise", it is St. Helena. I am grateful that there is a place like St. Helena exists; it makes me smile. I hope to visit there, one day.
Hi Brad, thanks for that comment 👍Hope you do get to make a visit someday 😊
Visited in 2013 on the RMS St Helena before the airport. Was like stepping back into a Britain from the 18th century. Lots of military gun barrels along the promenade and cliffs. Union Jack flags fly pledging continued loyalty to the crown.
The island is British but nothing like the UK. The island is ultra remote with a unique stress free lifestyle with pleasantries.
Will definitely return by plane at some point in the future to see any changes the airport has brought.
Hi Agma, thanks for the comment 👍how quickly 10 years go by, eh!
Yes, you probably would find it quite interesting to see the island now, after 6 years of air access has been in place. As locals living with the gradual changes over time, we probably don't notice the differences as much.

@@whatthesaintsdidnext thanks to you. Excellent work 🙂👌👍👍👋👋👋👋
The pancake race idea is fantastic! 😉
Hi @luismanuel2612, it's a Shrove Tuesday tradition going back many years, organised every year by the Anglican Church. The event stems from Christians making pancakes as a treat and to use up remaining ingredients in the kitchen before the start of Lent. Although a few people on island still observe Lent, the pancake race on Shrove Tuesday endures more as a community event and as you can see from the video, is still well attended and is a lot of fun for young and not-so-young alike 😊

You've made all good points for video ideas we've actually considered already. Production time is always a limiting factor for us, but we hope to add more of these insights over time, so perhaps consider subscribing to our channel for when they're ready 😊
For this particular video, commissioned by SHG's HR department, we set out to make an overview of Jamestown only, the goal being to give people considering a job on the island an idea of what they could expect in town. With this brief in mind we concentrated more on facilities and services rather than cultural or social points of interest, although we did manage to squeeze a few of those in too 😊
With regards the music scene, perhaps you may find one of our blog posts interesting: whatthesaintsdidnext.com/time-lapse-st-helena-guitar-maker/
We will have a think about making a video about the music scene on St Helena.
There is local produce in the shops, however, sometimes poor harvests for whatever reason can upset the balance between local and imports, which leads to shortages. Home gardens, or kitchen gardens, are a thing here. Not as widespread as it once was, however, there was an increase over the Covid isolation years.
Hope that helps some.
Would also love to visit Australia one day. It's on our wish list ❤️
If you do make a visit to us one day, make sure you have the Travel St Helena website saved: travelsthelena.com/
Online booking/payment for accommodation plus plenty of travel tips/advice.
Cheers 😊
@pipfox7834 there are not often houses for sale in any great number. Local people tend to obtain land and build our own homes and then they become family homes for life. Even when Saints go off to work abroad, most tend not to sell their homes as we always plan to return at some point.
Re prices though, it can vary greatly based on the usual factors of location, age, access etc., so it would be difficult to give you an accurate guide. But if we were to take a totally anecdotal stab at it, you would be looking at anything from £80k - £130k for something you described.
For employment on the island, keep an eye on the Public Service Jobs website: sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh/
Cheers 😊

😘 Thank you so much for this lovely video, this is fantastic, something like a magnet just touched my heart, probably I have DNA linked to St Helena, we need more of these lovely documentaries to project the island to the world, I won't mind being a public relations officer of the island in Nigeria to promote it's image.
I love St Helena island and it's my dream destination

Great video. I would love to visit Saint Helena one day alongside Tristan da Cunha. I'm curious why there's a Philippine flag at 9:11
Hey Christian, good spot (hadn't even noticed it ourselves before). The restaurant was opened in 2006 by, and still owned/operated by, a lovely lady who hails from the Philippines 😊👍
