A Timeless Discovery - The Natural Beauty of St Helena
From 600m coastal cliffs overlooking the vast south Atlantic, to the enchanting inland forests alive with birdsong, the natural sights and sounds of St Helena are simply breath-taking.
What must those first explorers, in 1502, have made of this untouched place, that rises so dramatically from the waves?
A Timeless Discovery indulges our imagination on a mystical adventure with Selene, that begins from the ocean itself and climbs steadily upward, revealing more and more of the colourful layers and textures that make up St Helena Island.
Making Timeless
As local photographers & filmmakers, we have long wanted to produce a special short film to showcase these aspects of St Helena that we love so much.
The concept of a mystical explorer being the first to set foot on the island is one we have quietly tinkered with for many years.
Finally, in February 2023, in designing promotional content for Travel St Helena we had the perfect motivation to get this video made. Selene agreed to become our focal character in the film and it was all shot over four different days in Feb/March '23.
Unfortunately, the demands of other projects pushed post production of this film back... and back... more than a year, until now. Finally, in November 2024, it is ready, and we invite you to sit back and enjoy, St Helena, 'A Timeless Discovery.'

Where are the black people that owned this land? Uk must not ever tell the world about Russia occupation of Ukraine territories
Hi Jess, thanks for stopping by the channel and your comment. 👍 You may be interested to know, St Helena was actually uninhabited when discovered in 1502 by the Portuguese. Although various ships/nationalities would call by, it wasn't until more than 150 years later, in 1659, that the first settlement was established, by the British. We remain British today. Best wishes to you from St Helena.😊
@@whatthesaintsdidnext oh thank you for the clarification

How are the doctors in the hospital trained? Is there a medical school on the island? Or do they go abroad to get their medical education?
Hi @j2zel, doctors are recruited from overseas. You will find information about healthcare here: sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh/healthcare/
Would it be feasible to start a dairy farm on the island? I could see that as being very beneficial to the islanders to be able to have their own local supply of milk and cheese... even possibly chickens on the farm too
Hi @j2zel, a few decades ago there used to be dairy farming on island, however, lower costs for importing these items soon made the industry unviable. Chickens are kept on island, mainly as a source of eggs, although supply can be intermittent and even these are shipped in sometimes when there is a shortfall.
Lajk br. 859. 21.11.2024. Prvi snijeg ove zime u Hrvatskoj. 🥶 Prelijepa Sveta Helena! Privilegija je živjeti na tako čarobnom mjestu usred oceana. Budite sretni i ponosni. A što je jedino ljepše od otoka? Dame sa otoka. 😊
Hvala Ivane na komentaru. 👍 Ima mnogo ljudi na Svetoj Heleni koji nikada nisu vidjeli snijeg osim na televiziji!! svaka vam cast 😊
Wow! Hawaii (albeit a mini version) in the South Atlantic. Another amazing video! Cheers, Darrin & Sharon.
The video and music are so beautiful! Thank you a lot for sharing this relaxing moment ❤
@relaxingmusic_sonocalm thanks for the feedback, lovely to read your comment 👍😊
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen the island's colours captured so vividly and beautifully! The sheer variety of landscapes in such a small place is quite unbelievable and you highlighted them amazingly well. I can't wait to visit Saint Helena one day.
Hi Stephen, thank you for that wonderful feedback ❤️👍 You are right about the different landscapes within the island. The really special thing is being able to walk freely in virtually any part of the island and the peace & solitude as more often than not you find there's not another soul in sight! Isolation within isolation! As photographers/filmmakers our favourite feature of the island are the stunning variety of soil colours found around the volcanic outer edges of the island, all shades of reds, blues and silvers that really shimmer when the light is right. Anyway, thank you again for your comment. When you do start planning your visit one day be sure to check out Travel St Helena for the best selection of holiday accommodation as well as top-notch customer support 😊 travelsthelena.com/
Prekrasan otok Sveta Helena. Kako proizvodite struju? Veliki pozdrav iz Hrvatske! 🇭🇷🤝

Lovely place, lovely advise, lovely video love from India
Hi Priyabrata, thank you for your kind comment ❤️ Best wishes from St Helena to India 😊
Place like this better than South Africa. High crime rate high murder rate. High unemployment rate Great to live on that Island.
🇿🇦. Slept rough in Glasgow city. Glasgow city mission Christian charity 1.5 million pounds a year. Refused me hot meal in winter. 32 staff dislikes foreigners. Don't drink alcohol and don't take drugs. Said homeless people with a job and accommodation not true. Susan Fraser Tulley and David Harper, Ewan staff said go back. Christians ? Did not claim benfiets. South Africans christians not welcome to Britain.
What is the record up Jacob's ladder? Seems like the thing there would be a competition about 🙂
Sam Collins set the current record on 29 January 2024, bottom to top in 5 mins 4.19 secs. An amazing achievement for sure 😊
are there any motorbikes on the island? i reckon it'd be a perfect daily commuter considering the narrow roads, ease of service, fuel economy & stuff. wouldn't be very safe for going up the bendy uphilly bits of the roads though, i imagine great video btw, keep it up guys. love from Jakarta <3
Hi Vincent, thanks for the comment and feedback 👍😊 We do have motorbikes on the island, not a whole lot compared to cars, however, lately we've noticed more scooters starting to be imported. There is very little flat road, most of the driving involves either up or downhill journeys so the vehicles need to have strong engines. Cars tend to be the vehicle of choice because of the weather, which is windy, wet and a bit chilly for a big part of the year. Best wishes to Jakarta, from St Helena ❤️
The world needs that flax. "One mans trash is another man's treasure." #linen
This is true, Sean. In fact, the flax on St Helena really was our treasure at one time. From 1907 to 1966 the island’s flax industry was a success. The plant was cultivated, processed and the fibre exported as raw material to make rope and twine products. Sadly, for St Helena, the business model collapsed as synthetic string took over. Today the costs and logistical challenges of exporting tends to be an obstacle for many industrial ideas, including flax (and even fishing!) A few island souvenirs are made from flax craftwork, however it is a tiny amount and it is a shame that we can't make more use of this resource.
@whatthesaintsdidnext a linen shirt and trouser costs almost the same as an acre of unprocessed flax so maybe producing an end product is a better option?
Thanks Sean, that's interesting to hear. It's very likely an idea that's already been put forward at some point over the years... although, now, the work to replace flax with the native vegetation seems like a very good idea as research has shown it is far better for the island's water security, along with other environmental benefits, as documented in other Cloud Forest Project films here on our channel.
@@whatthesaintsdidnext being an island I'm sure the lack of water is an economical issue so make money from the flax and build a desalination plant 🙃
Haha, yes, another good point. Believe us, all these conversations have been going on for years - the rate of progress is not because of a lack of good ideas 😉
Islands heritage in safe hands🧑🎓🧑🎓
@radleysmith7528 during our work documenting the St Helena Cloud Forest Project it's been impressive seeing the awareness in the younger generation of the Peaks National Park ecosystem. Very different to when we were that age.
Wonderfully explained🧑🎓
Thanks for viewing the video and your feedback, Radley 😊👍
Great work Kids🧑🎓👨🎓
Indeed 👍 They all did a great job made all the more challenging by it being a sweltering hot day when we were making this 😊

Fantastic beauty, and the nature isn't bad either 😉 Got slightly worried when she walked around on the sloping walls though, looks like quite a steep tumble down hill from there...
Thanks for the comment and your feedback, @zapfanzapfan 👍 The landscape is quite dramatic, steep and sheer in places. We're happy to report, however, we kept Latisha quite safe throughout filming and just used creative framing to bring out the impressive terrain 😊
@@whatthesaintsdidnext 👍
Aside from working in a bar, a shop, or fixing boats...what else is there to do? I'd love to live there but i think is more of a retirement island. One day, i would like to travel here.
Hi Christian, the Public Service Jobs website aims to recruit overseas expertise: sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh/ You may also want to check out the SHG Vacancies on their site: www.sainthelena.gov.sh/government/vacancies/ The other place to keep an eye on for week to week vacancies are the island's two main newspapers, The Sentinel by SAMS, www.sams.sh/the-sentinel-download/ and The St Helena Independent, www.independent.sh/ both are available online for a small subscription fee.
No fresh milk? So, no dairy farm on the island? Now, there is a business opportunity!
@zapfanzapfan there used to be fresh dairy, however, as import and storage costs came down the farming method became unviable.
@@whatthesaintsdidnext If everyone on the Island drank as much fresh milk as I do then a sizable farm (50-100 cows) would be needed. But tastes differ and some are lactose intolerant so maybe the market isn't big enough to support even one farm?
@zapfanzapfan you've actually summed it up quite perfectly there 😊 We've actually recently turned vegan ourselves (6 months today) and we know there are others on the island, plus with allergies and then simply tastes/preferences and other factors, not to mention the 4,000 pop size, we can see how it quickly becomes a real challenge to make a dairy farm work. In fact, the same applies for many more business ideas - the tiny market size is a real test for sustaining almost any small business venture. Even the island's fishing industry, with all those raw resources at our disposal, is struggling. You are not alone though, with those thoughts for fresh milk, we hear it all the time, even from people on the island.
@@whatthesaintsdidnext Oh, I assumed fishing was the major industry on the island and a major food source. I guess you could air freight in fresh milk for the few customers who really crave it as long as you have regular flights by relatively large planes anyway. I would, I don't like the high pasteurized long life milks and the powdered milk is no good either.
How i wish to return to st helena again. It has left me with wonderful memories of the island and of many people. I notice some changes which are for the better but wish the ship was still in service. Im now 77 and time is running out. My love to you all and to anyone who remembers me.❤❤
