    This seems like a franchise that's more suited for a *Video game* adaptation, to be honest.
    Imagine running around moving/driving City Ships. That'd be cool as hell.

    The trailer instantly made me go "?????" when like...the very first line almost was "The Earth's resources ran out so they put giant cities on giant pickup trucks".
    I'm sorry but...uh...you ran out of resources? But you could make giant mobile cities using some sort of extreme future architecture tech? .. you.. RAN OUT OF RESOURCES? But MADE GIANT ROBOT VEHICLES?

    • @nicholasrowley947
      @nicholasrowley947 5 ปีที่แล้ว +142

      To be fair, that was a major issue in the books as well. Hell, there's a group that want to destroy the moving cities because they're wasting said resources.

    • @aniszbd
      @aniszbd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the books the reason there's giant moving city is because the earth soil is too soft after the nuclear war, so any building which are made will sink into the ground.

    • @jackbaxter2223

      @Yamadiyoo The mobile cities were made because of the constant tectonic upheaval caused by the Sixty Minute War, with almost continuous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, meaning that no one place would be safe for long.

    it's sad because the books are amazing. I am a massive fan of the book and I was sincerely disappointed in the movie. The first half was great, the world building, the animations, they were all amazing. But the second half diverged from the book so much that I almost cried. That ending was the biggest cliché copout ever written, which really saddens me because the book had such an intense ending. The whole story on London's side was developped much further, and as a result Katherine (the blondie) got developed much better. Hell, Bevis (the handsome guy who saw Valentine push Tom) even serves a purpose. This move just bitched up a beautifully written story because they were afraid the original ending just wouldn't sit well with general audience.
    Grrrr, I really wanna spoil the real ending to Mortal Engines, but those are spoilers and.... I'll spoil anyone that wants if they ask :)

      @@Psycorde Spoilers... I think too much stuff goes on in the book to adapt into a movie. This film was too busy trying to be a fireworks display to properly develop the characters. And also they're right, the dialogue was wooden. I really wanted to like this film, I'm a massive fan of the books. But it was just lacking, and while there were 1 or 2 changes to the plot that worked in my opinion (the crash drive and how they stopped MEDUSA) the change to Katherine's story and how she was almost a non-entity in this made everything with her and Bevis really awkward. Also Tom being so much noticeably older than in the books (where he's 12) makes the relationship between Hester and himself, and his childish mannerisms, much more jarring. They should have had a younger cast in general. It's a shame really, I'd still watch a sequel but it probably won't get one.

      I do think critically of movies, and I really liked it. My whole family liked it. I honestly don't get what everyone's saying about the film. I liked the characters and I thought they were interesting. The development was a bit rushed, and I feel the film could've benefitted from 10 or 20 additional minutes to slow things down and refine some of it, but I don't get why people are saying the characters weren't good.
      For example: the cyborg zombie character: Shrike. They did a decent job establishing his character, explaining who he is and what he meant to Shaw. He's rather badass in the scenes he's in, and the moment where he says, "I release you from your promise" was well executed and a great example of setup and payoff in writing. I honestly felt they earned the emotional investment that they got out of me in his final scene. If I had one criticism, it would only be that it felt a little rushed.
      The dialogue... may seem cliché at times, but I felt that almost every line fit the film. The "you're a dinosaur and I'm the meteor" line may be cliché and overused, but it fit the film: the villain was motivated by ambition and survival instinct, and understood that Municipal Darwinism was unsustainable, and, to him, the other guy symbolized that dying ideology he was going to "save London" from... through a superweapon that changed the course of history; hence meteor to the other guy's dinosaur. Plus; the villain was Head of Archaeology; what other metaphor was he going to make?

      Wow; that line must've been taken out of context in the trailer then, because it worked in the film.
      The bad guy's been obsessed with survival, and he said both he and the girl were survivors as part of his attempt to break her with "We're not so different (only it's much better than typical examples because he's not talking out of his rear end), and when she tries to kill him after preventing his escape (while they're trapped on a city on a collision course) and she scars him with her knife, he asks her, "Is this what you want? You want to die?" (I'm paraphrasing; I can't remember the exact lines) And she responds, "No, I'm gonna live" (again paraphrasing). it fit the scene and it fit the film.

    When I saw the very first trailer, it seems like it was years ago now, I got kinda excited. All it showed was London, a moving city, hunting down and consuming another smaller country/city. It looked good and the idea was intriguing. Then more trailers came out and the concept seemed to be pushed further back in favor of a much more basic story. It reminded me more of a teen novel (Divergent, Maze Runner, etc...) as more info came out. The final nail in the coffin for me to wait for this to come out on Blu-ray was poster at my local cinema. Rather than showing the moving cities or the concept in any way, it was a close-up shot of the protagonist's face and the slogan "some scars never heal". They prioritized what appears to be a very simplistic, overdone story about a rebellious young adult rather than this dystopian world of carnivorous, vehicular countries.

    It's a shame, I really enjoyed this film when I saw it but I have read all the books and so I know all the setups and what they were doing. From everyone I have spoken to, they really enjoyed it and they haven't read the book. It sounds like a lot of people missed the point of the film. To say Shrike is a "mercenary" is just completely off base.

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I haven't read the books (I wanted to watch the film first so I could judge it on its own), I really liked the film, and I understood that Shrike is a cyborg-zombie of a fallen soldier from thousands of years ago. I honestly almost teared up in Shrike's last scene, and I felt the film earned that emotional investment that it got from me.
      My only real criticisms of the film are these: They could've afforded to slow the film down here and there and further develop certain things, and I still don't understand how the anti-traction lady knew Shaw was captured by the slavers? Did she know, or was she just scouting the general area after hearing that Shaw had been in London? That, the film could've better explained.

    • @ryanseager123456789
      @ryanseager123456789 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@matthewmuir8884 I was so happy how they did Shrike, If you liked his character I suggest reading the first prequel book. It tells the story of why london was the first city to become a traction city, it always tells the story of Shrike. The book is Fever Crumb.
      I agree it did jump quite a bit, but they did the entire book. It's ok for a book but when it's adapted it can feel rushed. in the film Anna Fang was a good friend of Hester's mother and so was trying to track her down anyway, but I didn't notice that it kind of skipped over how she knew that Hester was there. If i remember, in the book it is just pure coincidence, Anna Fang has no relation to them, they just happened to become friends after they escaped.
      I do suggest reading the books. I have a feeling they will be doing sequels because they set quite a bit up in the first film.

      But that's also how it should be, so whenever you've read "the book" you are rewarded with extra knowledge and details the movie only people dosen't know,

      Tom Natsworthy wasnt stealing old tech or hiding it to prevent other from using it since he had no idea someone was using it to create a weapon , he is just a teenage apprentice historian that loves London , he meets Katherine after being sent down to the gut for being late since he went out to watch the chase of the small city that London has captured . Doesnt look like he is friend in any way with Valantine daugther prior to that encounter , he knows who she is because is a fan of Valantine and thats it . Katherine is an interesting character that goes through a lot trying to find whats happening to her father , she investigate the lower levels of the city finding out all sorts of disgustings and disturbing things with the help of Bevis Pod before she confronts her father, she even dies saving Hester when her father try to kill her . A lot of very important parts of the book are changed or simply ignored and thats why the movie feels weird and rushed. No one understands why they want to destroy the Anti-Traction league because in the movie they completely fail to discuss the Municipal Darwinism , the world is no longer under the effects of the 60 minutes war and there is no reason to keep using the city to move around to hunt and destroy everyone else , they can simply go back to live like they did before the war destroyed the world but they dont want to change their way of living . I remember some old anime (Chrome shelled Regios iirc?) that had similiar concept to this except they at least put some thought behind it.
    Just like in this movie, cities are all extremely huge mobile platforms with buildings and even farmlands or forests on them.
    Just like in this movie, they went this route, because earth went through apocalypse (do not remember if human caused or external force caused)
    Just like in this movie, there is general lack of resources. People are not really starving, but those cities need some special fuel to keep working which is limited.
    And difference in that anime, that actualy showed that they thinked for 5 minutes about it were:
    Earth was trully post-apo. Wasteland for most part with poluted or poisoned air.
    And reason why cities are moving was due to influx of monstrous/mutated creatures that came with post-apo. They simply love to nom nom humies if they are around. Humans are armed (anime style of course, that is its own nonsense but hey, its anime) and can deal with them.
    But if they would stay in one place, more monsters would instincitvely start coming towards them, along with larger and more dangerous kinds untill they would simply be overwhelmed. While as long as city is moving, they will only have to deal with small monster packs along the way.
    There are few static places in world, specificaly mines that mine the fuel but they are very rare, extremely cramped and only in most defensible positions and even these places fall from time to time. Also those mines due to their smaller sizes do not mine enough fuel. Single city needs multiple mines to survive and most of its time it will travel between those mines to keep replenishing fuel.
    Generaly it conveys pretty nice "Humans are going to die if nothing changes" vibe

    The movie is (in my opinion) “inspired” by the book. The first book, the one it’s based off of, spends time in worldbuilding, character development, and real conflict which the movie doesn’t have. My advice, don’t go into the movie with the expectation of a live action of the book. (Although there are some similarities between the book and movie, they aren’t the same.)

      They have ruined Hester. I love her book version.

    • @matthewmuir8884

      I saw the film, I liked it, and I honestly want to give the book a try now that I've judged the film on its own without comparing it to the book. The film made me all the more want to try the book as I was intrigued by the world and the characters shown in the film.
      Funny enough; the author of the book said this about the differences between the book and the film: "Christian, writer/producers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and the rest of the (huge) team have done a fantastic job. They’ve made a lot of changes to the world, characters, and themes of the book, (and the weather is nicer) but it’s still basically the same story. The opening twenty minutes or so are essentially what I wrote all those years ago, and even when it takes its own path later on there are lots of moments and images which come straight from the book (like the valley littered with smashed cities in front of the Shield Wall, and the glorious vertical city on its far side). All the sets and costumes seem to have been designed by people who know the books at least as well as I do."

      @White Void What was wrong with the film's version of Hester? I really liked the film version; seemingly cold and no-nonsense at first, and slowly warms up to the Tom character. I also liked how in the film, because of Hester's character, the other characters were telling Tom that he was the one that could do better. Usually when there's a kind-of-dorky protagonist like Tom, the running gag is that everyone asks what the girl sees in him. I liked that funny little reversal of the usual formula.
      Please bear in mind that I haven't read the book.

    • @sagek674
      @sagek674 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew St. Cyr The book doesn’t pull and punches whereas the movie does. The movie has more of a “happy ending” in comparison to the novel. Although the first couple scenes in the book are the same, characters have more depth to them, and seeing my change over time is handled way better in the novel than movie. If you liked the movie, you may either love the book or actually hate it.

    This maybe because ive been playing Warhammer 40k Dawn of war the dark crusade. But when I watched it today, the robot looked like a damn necron. Like seriously a spitting image of what I imagined a real life necron would look like. More specifically the unit that were humans turned necrons.. can't recall their names pariah?
    Then also the leader of the wall (old asian dude) reminded me of Tau leadership...

      I don't get the Transformers comparison (since I don't like the Transformers films; they're mindless action with almost no story), but I really liked the film Mortal Engines. I thought it had plenty of interesting and engaging story and characters, I liked the worldbuilding, and overall I thought it was good. My whole family did when we went to see it together.
      I decided to watch the film first before reading the book, as I wanted to see how the film stood on its own.

    I was really hoping this would be the live action version of the anime Chrome-Shelled Regios, which has more or less the same mobile cities but the threat is giant vicious insectoid monsters, which is the reason the cities have to be able to keep moving. It's so much better as a story plot point. This is still a fantastic concept and idea that needs to be re-opened and explored properly as a unique dystopian reality theme. Neither this movie nor Chrome-Shelled Regios explores or uses that element perfectly.

      Garbage would be stuff like The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Temple of Doom, all the main Transformers films, Star Trek 1 and 5, The Crimes of Grindelwald, etc.
      Mortal Engines is not garbage. It is a good 7.5 out of 10.
