Good job Ken, this is exactly how you should break in a new bike, I've done it like this on all my bikes for years and years and none of them burn oil at all
I have an airplane and when I had my engine rebuilt they recommended for the first 10 hours to run it hard varying the RPM from time to time. This is to set the rings. I was told many years ago by a Harley engine rebuilder to decelrate like you are saying to suck oil past the rings. I think you are using a good method. I think changing the oil early is also a good idea.
I usually do it at 500 miles. However, I purchased a new Jeep last year and they didn't recommend changing the oil for something like 5k miles. The BMW GS I purchased a few years ago recommended something similar. When I was younger I rebuilt quite a few engine and changed the oil around 250 miles back then - always found lots of bits in that first change. I suppose if it really mattered new car manufactures would recommend doing it sooner.
@@motoken hello ken ,i just bought the 701 to but after 100km the bike shuts down while riding, so the last 10km it did that 3 times so whats the problem ?
New motorcycle engines have already been broken in by the factory the only reason for the break in period and why manufacturers say to take it easy, is to be sure that there are no mechanical failures.
so i revved my bike a few times into the limiter like littteraly 3 times, and for the rest i'm trying to ride it in like you. i hope i did it right lol, first time. What do you mean by burning oil?
This is exactly what I did with a KTM 950 Adventure and Buell XB12X Ulysses. The results: two bikes which used much less oil than the norm for those two models.
I have a 2018 701 sm and yes i have come across a false nuetral mutiple times now between 4th and 5th gear, seems to only happen when really getting on the throttle
Hello, Thanks for your video. I was wondering about a few things. 1 - What helmet mount are you using - I love the perspective as I can see you speedometer and the road perfectly like I was driving. 2 - I am very interested in this bike,I have a custom built DR650 Supermoto and Super Tenere ES now. My concern was some have reported a false neutral between 4th and 5th gear. Are you experiencing this? Thanks
Hi, can anyone comment. I purchased a 2018 Husqvarna 701 with 1100 miles on it. I dumped out the oil and put in the diesel oil that was recommended by Ken. How long should I run this oil in the bike before I change it? Is there any comments on the oil burn after putting in the diesel oil at this time, or am I wasting my time? Thank you.
Going from a liter bike to this bike how do you like it? I have a r1 and have had a couple other sport bikes thinking about trading it in for the same husky. Do u recommend it?
hmm well I still kept my 1199r... unless you're completely sure you're not going to miss the sportbike riding style and the speed, the 701 will satisfy you 95 percent of the time. only possible problem is straight line speed on the track and wind protection for freeway rides which sport bikes excel. I kept my 1199r and r1200gsa because I don't want to compromise. if you can, keep the r1 and add the 701

thanks Mark, yes after maybe 300 miles or so? not sure actually...some people change the oil after 200 miles I'm not sure myself lol

I am planning to do it halfway before the 600 mile service so 300...I want the 600 mile done at the dealer for the record.

The factory should break in the engines as the last step of the assembly process before even installing them into the bikes

Can you cite a valid source?

Why don't the manufacturers just break in the engines before they even install them on the motorcycles?
takes to much time
