      No company yet has cracked the code on cymbals, particularly the hi-hats. I really think it should be the area of focus

    • @B-kn8yb

      @@CrappyProductsI think they’d have to limit the drum sounds that come with the kit. Throw more samples at the hi hats. Maybe double the amount, with a round robin triggering so it’ll never play two of the same sound right after one another. You can hit a hi-hat three times at the same volume and each hit will sound slightly different. So 0-127 samples isn’t enough. You need it to pull from another batch of sounds 0-127 and then randomly trigger from those two sets. Maybe one set is a few cents higher or lower in pitch as well.

    I agree that a lot of the trigger settings could have been more “out of the box” but you can fix a lot of these issues he mentions in the module. I’ve had the set since it was released and all in all I’m pretty happy with it. I’ve been working with Mike over at Zildjian on any issues and he’s been very responsive and open to criticisms. They want to know what issues there are. I’m sure, with updates, that this thing will be amazing soon. In my review on sweetwater I gave it 4 stars due to things that can be fixed and 6 stars for the potential. All I know is since I’ve had this set I can’t wait to play every day. Other e sets I’ve had just didn’t stir that up in me. Think “blowup doll”(other e kits) compared to “more advanced silicone dolls”(this kit) it’s much more pleasurable to play the real cymbals than rubber ones.

      I'm glad you've had a good experience. I've also met Mike several times, he's a good dude! But even with setting adjustments, I and multiple other drummers I know haven't had a good accurate experience with the cymbals. Especially when compared to the competition at this price. Even the drums I played at Zildjians own factory I tested.

I received the new ones today and had to go through the strenuous process of resetting everything again. It took hours. I’m returning it. This was all after I left my comment earlier. You’re absolutely right, if I had gotten an efnote, I’d be able to sit down and just play the damn thing and I’d be able to tune and muffle. You’re absolutely right about the fact that they should’ve waited before they released this.

    It shocks me that Zildjian decided to release Alchem E in this state. On paper this should have been a smash hit, but you seriously have to wonder why it was shipped out this way. Sure, it’s a first generation product from a company who has never made such an instrument before, but considering there’s plenty of small boutique brands developing high quality components that rival the big names, I feel like there shouldn’t be any excuses. As you’ve stated in the video, what’s the point if the cymbals barely match up to traditional rubber cymbals? I hope they’re able to patch their way into a better kit but the thought of that is sad, it should have been a better product right out of the box.

      Zildjian has a history of just throwing shit at the wall, giving it the bare minimum R&D, then abandoning it immediately. If I had to guess, I'd say its because their bread and butter products had the R&D paid for literally a century ago, so they can feel free to develop whatever half-baked crap they want with zero risk to their bottom line.

    It's 2024 .. electronic drums should be so much better and so much more advanced by now. Roland have been doing the TD mesh series for a quarter of a century now and Yamaha still making most kits with small pads and a lot of them sound pretty good but nothing sounds incredible except the Pearl mimic module is close to realistic sounds but its outrageously expensive. All of these companies are just trickling out products and technology to string you along just like Apple does. I returned my set after spending several weeks on tweaking. Customer service first denied all issues I reported, then confirmed and... cut conversation short with "thanks for feedback". The level of cymbals triggering inconsistence is astonishing. Every stroke is crapshooting, you never know what to expect. I am afraid the problem is not software per se. Most likely the core design is wrong. Positional sensing in drums (including cymbals) is typically implemented by using multiple sensors and comparing their signals. The assumption is that the closer the stick hit is to a sensor, the higher the amplitude of the signal from that sensor. For this to work, the pad must be made of a material that dissipates vibrations significantly, such as rubber or nylon mesh.
    Zildjian mounted two piezo sensors on a thin metal disk. Unlike rubber, metal does not dissipate vibrations, so both sensors receive essentially the same signal regardless of the hit position. I had expected that Zildjian had found a reliable way to detect the hit zone, perhaps by analyzing the signal spectrum in addition to amplitude, but it seems they were overly optimistic about their design.

    What a shame. That kit is beautiful. The module is beautiful. The cymbals look so playable. At that price, it can't just look good, it needs to work well. Your review reminds me of when I added triggers to my drums in the early '90s. Things were sort of in their infancy back then and it appears that this kit also is in it's infancy. The problem is that E-Drums are not in their infancy anymore. They work quite well. Zildjian should have collaborated with an experienced E-drum maker who could have given them a functional product that's also beautiful and includes the great name recognition.

    Played this thing in the store and for it me it felt awful and didn't sound as good as an efnote or even strata. Maybe acoustically it sounds great, and the shells are beautiful but.. I just don't care. Companies must think that most people really want this dynamic thing set that can change easily from acoustic to electric but I'm literally never going to do that, and I doubt a big market share out there is interested. 7000$ is ludicrous for a kit that doesn't sound as good as 3500$ kits, doesn't offer any advanced or new technology, is a generation 1 product so we have no idea how the reliability will be.. as well as looking and feeling cheap. There was a promo video that zildjian PUT OUT THEMSELVES with pro drummers and a drummer immediately tried to do hi hat foot splashes and it didn't even work properly. Embarrassing.

    Secondly, I wonder if the target consumers for companies that still make these incredibly high-end electronic drum kits are very successful musicians that can afford them. In a world where everything is becoming more and more digital, plugins are replacing amps, drum samples, and much more... I am surprised that high-end e-kits are still being made when someone nowadays could easily get a cheap drum module, triggers, throw some mesh heads on their drums and low volume cymbals on their stands, and find a preferred free drum kit plugin from the internet for a fraction of the price.

    • @alexpavlov6528
      @alexpavlov6528 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If worked as advertised, the kit would solve the low volume performance/IEMless band rehearsal problem. The sound of sticks hitting metal cymbals is easily masked by samples at rather low volumes, this does not happen when stick hits rubber pads, not mentioning the enormous sound of hand clapping produced by Roland VH14D. For those who use edrums for low noise practice or normal/high volume performance (that is with some kind of headset) the "natural cymbal feel" seems to be the only benefit, but it is still an approximation of natural cymbal behavior, not sure if there is any practical difference.

    This is a cymbal company...one that a lot of people consider the best. These e-cymbals should be equally as good in the e-cymbal world as they are in the real cymbal world (high end/pro.) To get that so wrong is a huge fail. Back to the drawing board for a version 2.0. That's GOT to be better!

    The cymbals in this kit are so baffling to me. They are literally the main feature of the kit, and yet Zildjan cheaped out on the sensors by not including an edge sensor. Zildjan has no presence in the E drum space, and yet they would rather come in with VERY expensive whole kit offerings and make the cymbals incompatible with every other kit by using Ethernet style ports. Why would they not make the cymbals compatible with other modules and also sell cymbal packs? Why would they think they could upcharge so much for these kit configurations? They don't command even remotely the same brand loyalty in this space as Roland, and they lack feature parity, yet they would ask for a $7000 buy in to a closed off ecosystem with no guarantee of future updates. You couldn't even use other electronic cymbals if you wanted to with this module. This is a premium product marketed towards people who largely already have most/all of what it offers. Most people who would want Zildjan E cymbals already have an electronic kit, and people who might consider this kit have better options for cheaper.

      Thank you for answering the question. I've been searching for since I've seen these symbols. They are not compatible with other e kits which I have a Alissis strike pro s e... That really sucks that I can't get this symbol pack. Because I really would like to buy symbols for my electric kick. That feels like real symbols and the response of real symbols and you are correct. They missed out on an opportunity. Probably to make a lot of money with selling these symbols. As a pack for other electric kits. I.
      Think it's crazy that they set this small drum kit at $7000 when I bought 1 for 2800. That's bigger, then this one. O well I'm hoping a company will come out with these types of Symbols. That are compatible with other drum kits..

    I was really surprised and disappointed when I tried this kit in store. I love cymbals and own a set of L80’s. I was REALLY looking forward to the “best electronic cymbals” on an e kit that I’ve ever played… and the triggering was honestly pretty bad. I hoped that it was simply a “store” kit that had been beaten to death or even had settings tweaked and screwed with… But it sounds like my experience was pretty standard. I also have to gripe that there was a clear plexiglass cover over the module so you couldn’t even really experiment with the menu and different sounds/kit customizing. I don’t know if that was a Zildjian or Guitar Center decision. I sincerely appreciate Zildjian’s R&D into an E-kit, and I really hope they don’t give up altogether. I hope they are able to improve the kit, because I agree there is a TON of potential. Playing the L80 cymbals feels SO much better than rubber cymbal pads. I’m rooting for them!

    We only need clever AI software to augment low volume inputs. You'll use standard drum mics (close positioning) and the input will be analysed real time and transformed to a quality drum sound. The inputs will train the software for better accuracy over time whilst playing. This will end the acoustic/electronic debate forever. You won't actually be playing electronic drums. Any sound (be it low volume or not) are transformed into something else. Any sound your mic pics up could be trained and transformed. With AI, I think it's a matter of time. The person building this will be insta rich.

    Why? Why does this even need to exist? Zildjian makes the best cymbals in the world. Do that. If you really must get into the eKit Space though (which is to be fair the way a large proportion of the market is going for pub/club work), at least make sure the cymbals are just the best in class. Or don't bother, because it's embarrassing. Imagine if Roland now decided to bring out a range of acoustic cymbals that were way more expensive than Zildjians but sounded like ZHTs, I'd be as "excited"...
    I really think Zildjian is just trading on its name here. If it was any other "new" eKit manufacturer it would be laughed out of town at that price. Does it really have the money to get this to where it needs to be and to continue to support it long term. It's a lot on money to dump on what could quickly become a white elephant with a lot of proprietary gear. Worrying also that it can't even provide extra add-on pieces at launch.

    i bet the cymbals are using a digitized version of what the gen16 were trying to do. i do think the gen16 cymbal could have been something amazing, if paired with the drum equivalent. something like an acoustic/electric guitar. quiet enough for a coffee shop, but then amplified for a bar. i once plugged my diy tom into an amp(cuz why not?), and with some tweaks could sound pretty good. i never played the gen16s, but in a non-digital world, this could have been an interesting electronic take.

    Disappointing Zildjian haven’t put the right level of work in their product develop lifecycle to ensure this product can compete.
    We all want more choice and new competitors in the market is good. But a lot of the high end E Kit are falling short in to many areas to justify the level of investment to purchase one.
    Great opportunity to offer cymbals that feel and play better than competitors and this has fallen short.
    Maybe software updates can save Zildjian to resolve the issue identified.

    The cymbals are probably the lightest on the market so I would not have minded the extra weight of a better trigger system on them. In fact, using a 3 zone system on these cymbals would probably make them as heavy as a normal cymbal therefore improving the overall feel of them. I don't understand why they went with this setup when other metal e-cymbal makers have a better solution that Zildjian could have improved upon instead.

    You'd think Zildjian would tweak those better considering this is not their first time doing e-drums. It's strange Zildjian decided to reinvent the square wheel with those cymbals when their Gen3 line already worked fine and they could just improve on that design instead. Also, touring with that set must be real jazzy when you invariably lose those proprietary TRS to RJ45 cables. With regular TRS cables, you can just go to the store closest to you and get by. Where are you gonna find replacements for the Zildjian cables?

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s just regular RJ45 for the cymbals, and regular TRS for the drums. So no thing we can’t replace. As for electronic cymbals, this really is their first time. The GEN 16 stuff was a weird hybrid thing that was still technically acoustic with sound processing
