I brought these EOS R5 files into lightroom and raised the exposure by about 2.5 stops. Then, I recovered the shadows and exposed the image perfectly. Zooming in to a 100%, I couldn't find any noise in the shadows. The sharpness was quite incredible. The eye was perfectly in focus. I think Canon has finally caught up to Sony and Nikon in terms of dynamic range. Even the severely underexposed images looked perfect when exposed correctly. I'm highly impressed by the dynamic range.
Man that’s tough!!! I would say the 110 and gfx. Only if I’m shooting things that don’t move... like professional models, everything else the 85 rf is really incredible
J. Marcus Photography I played with the raws. Using the same Adobe color profile and white balancing in the same spot, they are very similar in skin tones, but the R5 still has the magenta cast in the shadows. If anything, the R has a more pleasing skin tone to my eyes than the R5, that is a bit too pink. Then I tried to apply one of my favourite presets (from affob), and those presets work with the Adobe standard profile and still the R looks better, the R5 has flatter duller colors just like my Sony. Also the R has the camera standard profile from Canon that is better than the Adobe profiles...
juanmaasecas Thank you for your tests! I wonder if the Lightroom update will help out with the camera profiles? I usually do a camera calibration tweak at the bottom in Lightroom to match files better. Color is so subjective though, everyone has different tastes
@@SNAPAVELI I'm still stuck between the two systems. Nothing beats the 5DIV and 100-400 for wildlife and video in extreme wet conditions where I shoot often but I still love Nikon colors, even though the Z body size is a real disappointment with any lens over about 100mm.... IMHO. Thanks, again!
Thank you for doing this test. I've been hoping someone would post something like this. I have the R for the same reason, the glass, but was hoping for an upgrade for a lot of reasons. In terms of still photos the R5 seems like a huge winner. Unfortunately, due to the issues it has in video modes I've been thinking of switching to the A7R iv instead of upgrading to the R5.
You’re welcome!! This is the exact type of comment Canon needs to see!! They are going to lose money and lose to Sony once again and there is no reason to!! Just fix the issue Canon and you will win!
R5 has 1.20 Stops more DR,anything up to 3-4 stops exposure push will not see any major difference, but if you push 4-5 stops the difference is pretty amazing.
I saw this vid quite a while ago when I only owned the R then; just reviewed again. I now have both, the R and R5. RE taste, I do prefer the warmer image out of the R. The difference in quality with stills doesn't justify the cost difference IMHO. The big selling point for me (for stills) is the IBIS. It's amazing to be able to take shots at slower shutter speeds with available light only, and see them tack sharp; something that was impossible with the R (and other non-IBIS cameras). The other big seller for me was full frame video that's not pixel binned or line-skipped. I've compared the 4K video out of both cameras. I'm finding that motion seems better out of the R5 (unexpected; could be my samples). The dynamic range is a bit better, and the colors also look better out of the R5. This is with HQ mode on the R5 vs. 4k on the R. The way the test footage was taken doesn't show an apparent difference in sharpness (moving kids) but the motion and color is definitely improved. Anyway, enjoyed the 2nd viewing just as much as the first. Thanks!
Spec-Productions Thank you! Yes these new cameras are so good, there is very little room for improvement from year to year. I really see no reason for the upcoming 90mp canon body
Nice compare, but.. So sad, that you have'nt make some overexposured photos, so we can't compare dynamic range in highlights. May be you can add some? Thx!

I saw one review that said that the R5 seems to underexpose by about 2/3 stop compared to other cameras. It almost seems that way here too? Even at the same settings, the R seems to be about 2/3 stop brighter, or am I wrong?
@@SNAPAVELI I just watched a comparison of the R5 vs A7RIV and at same shutter/aperture/iso, the exposures were the same (and the R5 was actually cleaner at high ISO's). I did notice that the R was a bit brighter in shadows than my 5DIV, so maybe it's just how the R processes shadows. Oh well. LOL. Pixel peeping isn't as fun as real shooting anyway.
Bro that's insane. That's it. Did you try to put in one of your presets? I wonder how it would hold? Because it will mess a bit more with the file. It would be interesting to see with one of your presets.
Hey man great video, how are you getting lightroom to read the raw files out of the R5? I didn’t think there was lightroom support yet? Mm LR and photoshop won’t open the files yet??
J. Marcus Photography ok thanks for the heads up 🙏 - thought that was the case, but just wanted to check before I invested some time doing that. Got mine today and enjoying shooting with it so far 😀
Took some time to see the files for myself. Gotta say, yes you see the difference. But that was to be expected when you look at the current prices from these bodys. The colors straight out the cameras are also very different.
Good simulation, however it would have been a good idea to test in lower or different light conditions rather than just under exposing. But I get it, the files have alot of room for manipulation.
Random question! Have you ever tried the RP? I have one, and thinking of upgrading to the R! I would love to know (if you have tested it) if the DR is far better on the R than the RP
J. Marcus Photography I love the RP.... for stills is a great camera, but I want the R for the little better size, better grip, better battery life... etc
Read a review that says Canon is baking 2/3 stop of NR in raw files at iso 100-600 with the R5. Still looks good though, there's definitely an improvement over the R.
I saw that as well! Kind of a strange thing to do , but on my first real shoot Wednesday, the files are really good! I’m very much happy on the photo side! Video side.... I’ll make a video about that shortly
Thanks but none of these shots are in focus at all. Very soft all over. Were you using eye AF? Great tutorial on why you should be very selective shooting an f/1.2 lens wide open instead of shooting wide open all the time.
