    I love these addict survivors. I'm one of them myself. I'm not a celeb chef or a rock star. I'm just a working bum, recovering opiate fiend, not of the doctor shopping pill kind, and who's reading Lanegan's memoirs at the moment. It hurts my soul when guys like Tony Bourdain crash into the earth on a deliberate dive. I can't imagine his private pain, and I'm not in any way critical of his actions. By god it's crossed my mind many a time. But he dragged himself right out of the muck and he learned to fly. He did so for a long time too. He fucking nailed it. I loved the shit he did. It was some of the most entertaining stuff around. He was such an interesting guy, and was so easy to listen to. I seriously dug his stuff.
    I guess you can never know people's private pain. Tony Bourdain's loss is a fucking tragedy.

      Wow that end scene hits hard. I've always been a fan of the darkness in Mark Lanegan's music. Not because I'm morose or morbid, but because his music says "life is hard, sad, even tragic- and that's okay". There is comfort there and, if you look hard enough, beauty. Gonna be over here listening to "Whiskey for the Holy Ghost" if anybody needs me.

      longhorn2615 - the copyright at the end of the credits says 2017. So sometime last year. Another clue are the people harvesting marijuana plants during the "strange religion" lip-sync scene. So it obviously has to be after Washington State legalized pot.

    • @joanlynch5271
      @joanlynch5271 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Evergreen Layne certainly the music is about death. I have come to my own conclusion that it was a mistake. I feel like it is easier to process that way. Since there is no mention of a note and reports are that it didn't seem all that well planned out, maybe it was a tragic mistake.

You know nothing of the preparations he may have made for her. I could judge you from a distance as well and Im sure you would be the first to question me. One thing is for sure, while she has lost her Dad which is very sad, she will have all options and means to recover and follow any dream she has because of what Anthony has provided for her.

    Holding it together is gonna be tough, especially, today!
    PS. I can either watch old Parts Unknown EPS with Anthony, or play Marks Gargoyle album!
    Anyways, both Mark and Anthony, are hopefully drinking beers and eating Tapas in another alternative universe!

    All those years, listening to Screaming Trees and Mark Lanegan Band; even attending his shows and meeting him a couple of times...
    I never knew much about him and after recently reading two of his books, I wish I HAD got to know more about him years ago, so that when I had met him - I'd cherished those moments a little bit more.

      We take a lot of things for granted and don't cherish moments of our life that way down the road turn out to be some of the best ones we've ever had. I guess that one of the attributes of becoming wise is learning to value each and every moment of our existence. Unfortunately, this wisdom often comes when most of these moments have already passed, and we are left with dwindling memories of past experiences, wanting with every tiny particle of our souls to re-live them and to engrave them into our memory. Alas, we need to treasure only what we have, and to find enjoyment in the melancholy of revisiting our memories of the events that we now value so much.

    • @gladiatorsrage99
      @gladiatorsrage99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your sentiments, and I agree that it is a beautiful thing, all of those things can help make life precious. I wonder what was eating up Tony inside? The scene of him smoking a J is iconic imagery, especially set over a beautiful natural setting, yet he seems nervous and fidgety, gazing in the distance in longing with perhaps a hint of despair. I might be completely projecting and wrong but I see a man who was troubled and burning with regrets of an unfulfilled life. I imagine spending almost 300 days of the year on the road takes its toll on having any kind of family life, and spending time with his daughter would take a definite backseat to the cost and energy required of living on the road. Did spending so much time away from his flesh and blood eat away at him to a point he could not forgive himself for the lost moments? Did his relationship fail because he was simply not present?
      Yes the guy had the ultimate dream job...for many of us, we can only imagine the richness one experiences travelling around the world, soaking in the culture and foods of faraway lands, but is it enough to satisfy ones soul? The pursuit of pleasure is risky business, hedonism can ensnare even the most vigilant in it's intoxicating perfume of sensory overload. Did Bourdain feel he gained the world, but lost his soul in the process?
      I think of my own son and I cant imagine not seeing him for most of the year, I would find THAT would HURT. I love him that much. That is just me however, we are all wired differently with a unique set of priorities in life. IF someone offered me Bourdain's job, would I take it? I can say that I wouldn't from the comfort and safety of realistically knowing that the chances of it ever happening are remote. Yet...there is that part of me I see deep inside Anthony that would leap at the chance. I might just get on that jet and be swept up in the allure of a exotic locale, jet setting my way around the globe, indulging in the best food and drink that the world can offer. In fact it would almost be impossible to say no to such an opportunity. If you were offered the world, would you be able to say no?
      With all respect to Mr. Bourdain, whom I admire deeply, I will end this post without drawing concrete conclusions. Only Anthony alone knew the reasons that led up to his death. Thank you for taking us on the ride with you.
      R.I.P. sir

      @scottallen9556 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Martin Perhaps you're accurate about Tony because the only thing that he didn't seem to embrace fully in life was his family or other loved ones? I'm close with my kids so I find it beyond selfish to take your own life and leave those you love to deal with your sadness. It's all but completely unforgivable. I literally can't fathom suicide as a solution and I don't have a fraction of the success or wonderful life that Anthony Bourdain had. Now he has wrecked his daughters life for the foreseeable future.

    Started listening to Mark Langegan in the early 90's with the Screaming Trees. IMHO, Lanegan's best albums are still The Winding Sheet, Whiskey for the Holy Ghost and Bubblegum. I had to drive almost an hour to find the Winding Sheet when it came out. If you haven't heard them you should check them out. The tracks played on this were from Bubblegum.

    I keep coming back to Whiskey for the Holy Ghost after a few of my own (whiskies), the lyrics of which are some of the finest poems in rock music; they are so raw and they cut me to the quick.
    Mark Lanegan's death has affected me like no other musician, his powerful words drew me in to the point where I was living his life with him and feeling his pain, albeit vicariously and in my own very much milder and toned down version of his amazing and incredibly well-lived life. Few other singers bare their souls so eloquently, and so passionately, and he 'clicked' with me from the very first moment I heard 'Strange Religion' at the end of an episode of Californication - criminally late in his career for me I guess, but I made up for it after that by seeing him perform whenever he came to London - I became kind of obsessed, which is pretty strange for a bloke in his forties/fifties, I thought I'd grown out of all that.
    I bought and loved his autobiography 'Sing Backwards and Weep', but I just can't bring myself to read 'Devil in a Coma' - maybe I'll give it a while and it'll be fine after a bit more time - strange thing to say about somebody whom you've never even met dying eight months ago, right?
    Whenever I see this clip my heart breaks all over again, but then I read the warm and loving comments on here and I feel good once more; that heart is patched over for a while and it's great to know that I'm not alone. And never really was.
    Edit: ...and I'm so self-centred I forgot to mention Tony Bourdain in my post too - RIP, both legends!
