Before she mentioned her acne, I was actually thinking about how nice her skin looks. I can’t really put my finger on what’s different, but her looks super hydrated and glowy. I guess maybe she’s doing things to clear her acne and it’s making all of her skin look really nice.

I'm struggling really badly with acne as well, and although I know it's an unpleasant experience for you, it really, REALLY means a lot that you're willing to hop on camera and show us not only how to work with less-than-perfect skin, but also how to look at it differently such that it doesn't weigh on our self-esteem so heavily.
What you said in one of your prior videos has stuck with me to an insane extent; whenever I feel upset about it, I think back to what you said about looking at acne as a feature, and nothing more.

I really like Sam’s method of making tutorial videos. Instead of having this super practiced and planned video, she starts with an idea and we kind of get to follow her along for the process. I feel like I learn a lot more that’s applicable to other makeup looks than in overly planned tutorials. Seeing her thought process really helps me take the things she’s doing and apply them to more than just the tutorial look.

If you haven’t used a strong retinol regularly, that is very normal. Just use the tiniest bit or mix it in with your moisturizer.once you stop peeling, use it once again, wait to stop peeling, do it again... repeat until the days between are fewer and fewer. Retinol helped my acne like nothing else did. Mine was relentless for like a decade and giggled at everything I threw at it. It’s worth the adjustment period. I’ve been using it for a few years and just about a month ago went to every night.

My acne also responded well to eliminating silicone, I know everyone says it doesn’t affect acne, blah blah blah. But Every skin is different, I look at it almost like an allergy, shellfish isn’t BAD, but it gives some people hives, ya feel me?

Doing for the holidays: honestly, not much since I have some bad family memories associated with this time of year. BUT - in true grandma millenial fashion, I'm an avid knitter and there's a yarn shop that does their massive annual sale on New Year's Day, so my mom and sister and I hit that up and then eat Mexican food afterwards. It's truly my ideal holiday scenario.

Cystic acne didn’t hit til my 20s. 5 yrs of birth control pills + 2 rounds of Acutane didn’t clear it. Changed dermatologist. Was prescribed 25mg Spiranolactone + 100mg vitB6 per day. 6 weeks later, skin clear. Everyone’s different but it worked for me. Wish someone had told me before going thru hell of Acutane. Samantha, you are gorgeous & hands-down best mua on YT. ❤️

I could tell right away your were fucking with retinol! My skin acts the same way. I have to say though once you get through this phase and adjust.. if you can handle this part (patience).. you may be very pleasantly surprised! It's also great for wrinkles... not that your forehead even moves... but when you're 32 you're going to want to be able to handle some retinol. You're so beautiful.. don't be sad. No one is judging you. Have fun on vacation (with spf lol)! 😘

      Is retinol a peel?

    • @kristinmatthews8958
      @kristinmatthews8958 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It's Vitamin A. It can be in different forms and strengths, usually a cream or oil. I prefer a lower strength one by Jordan Samuel. I tried all of the prescription strength ones as a teenager before I finally did accutane. It will make your skin peel though and slough off. You want to start off once or twice a week and work up to more often@@elementaldeity1

    • @jhe9488
      @jhe9488 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Wicked Muse retinols are a group of vitamin A derivatives. A lot of OTC face creams have it including a lot of drugstore options. The prescription variety is tretinoin (brand name Retin-A). If accelerates skin turnover so helps with acne and signs of aging. The prescription stuff is quite abrasive to the skin at the beginning and definitely has a long adjustment period. It can also make your acne somewhat worse before it gets better.

    • @elisemcbride9858

I'm 50, have very dry skin and still can't tolerate retinol. I use glycolic acid for chemical exfoliation. No bumps. No pissed off skin. Loosening up the flakes with jojoba oil or grapeseed oil before cleansing also helps.

My New Year’s resolution is actually partially thanks to you, I’m not buying any makeup for the year 2019. You’re completely right, the market is oversaturated and I’m kinda embarrassed at how much I’ve consumed makeupwise this year, I see a recommendation I get it. I’m not using my makeup I’m just buying into the hype. They say if you write something you’re more likely to stick to it. So I’m not spending any money on makeup 2019 (bye VIB rouge status you gave me crappy rewards anyways)

I know acne is a huge struggle for you and it’s such a painful thing, but to shine a better light on it, it’s really a blessing to a lot of your followers. Since we “worship” beauty gurus so much these days, anyone who has any sort of thing that makes them seem a little more average can be really refreshing and confidence boosting for your followers.
Of course I still wish that your skin will clear up soon because I know from experience how damaging it is to self esteem and everything else, but just think there can be a positive side to it.
I also have no doubt you’ve taught many people how to spot conceal!
My goals are to continue my self love journey I began this year, stop being such an impulsive buyer (especially makeup), and work towards becoming more organized in virtually every aspect of my life because I’m messy as fuck.
    What are your goals Sam????

Spent the holidays with my family and my husband's family. No presents this year because we are renovating our fixer upper, but decided to take any extra money we had and donate items to the local animal shelter. We figured that instead of getting everyone cheap things, Christmas cards would be more meaningful... It's been hard because I am someone who enjoys giving but I must say, it was so nice to just enjoy being around everyone and relaxing. Have a good vacation, Sam!

I am eating very much for the holidays and my goal for the new year is to be nicer to myself. I'm in a great spot in life and I'm trying to focus more energy on being kind to/proud of myself and less energy fearing that all those good things will go away and in turn running myself ragged with stress. We will see how that goes lol Happy holidays to you! ❤️❤️

This is such a different kind of glam and I am so here for it. I think it's a really unique placement and color pairing between the topper pigment and the base shadow, and this is a needed break from the standard NYE looks I feel like everyone does.
Skincare tips if you or anyone browsing comments is interested in hearing from a former facial mountain range owner (I currently only have small whitehead breakouts and some dryness):
You might be breaking out pretty significantly because of winter dryness exacerbated by the retinol treatment. Retinol/Retinoids will cause added dryness, and finding the right one for you is tricky because they all vary so much in quality, strength, and balance with the other ingredients in your skincare and the retinol/-oid itself. Retinol based treatment products also are known to cause purging, where essentially your skin is ridding itself of the bad stuff below the surface layer as the retinol encourages deeper cell turnover than the average over the counter AHA or BHA serum. If the breakout is flaring up, it may be from purging. If you really want to start a retinol/-oid treatment, check the potency and consider starting at a much lower one then working your way up in strength. The Ordinary has some squalane-based retinoid products which are supposed to be kinder and more moisturizing than a lot of more elaborate products (also cheaper). This is all quite unscientific I realize, so consider checking out Gothamista here on TH-cam. She has had a long journey with retinol products and has tried so many.
Dryness exacerbates breakouts by damaging the surface layer of your skin. This makes your pores more vulnerable to the gross things that clog them and then more prone to breakouts. Liah Yoo, a Korean TH-camr, has a bunch of good videos for hydrating and moisturizing acne-prone skin. I can only knowingly suggest a few things for healing cracking skin and acne which I've tried, but she has heaps to learn from.
Personally, raw Manuka honey as a face mask every other day (even as a spot treatment mask) has made such a difference in my skin. It's known for healing properties and being anti-bacterial so it might be worth a shot. It's already pretty expensive here in the US, but I figure it can't cost more than most pore-clearing masks at Sephora in CA. To repair your skin routinely, Etude House Soon Jung Cica balm is very soothing and 100% recommend it as a final nighttime layer of moisture. I use it when I use too many/much acids or if I have a bit of sunburn. If that doesn't ship to Canada, try Tamanu oil on the areas where you're peeling. It's quite a thick oil so it may break you out if you apply it straight on. I'm a bit acne prone and for me, mixing a small pump of it into my moisturizer helps me heal dark spots all over and minimizes my sensitivity.
For acne, I know you (hopefully Sam) have tried a lot. Idk if you've done an elimination routine recently, but try getting rid of all your scented products and starting a routine from scratch which only uses a single treatment product (serum/essence/etc) which addresses your acne. The pill cleared up the bulk of my acne which was largely hormone-/stress-based, but whenever a properly big sucker begins to surface (literally like clockwork once a month), I spot treat with the treatment from acne.org (orange/white tube). That stuff is very no-frills and it does the job gently over several days, sometimes faster if I'm using acids regularly.
Thanks for reading until here if you made it. Good luck with your skin journey!

I developed food allergies out of no where 2 years ago (28 now). Hormonal acne on neck and chin area kept getting worse and nothing helped. Did an elimination diet and realized the culprits were sugar, dairy, coconut/palm and soy. They cause inflammation in me that results in cystic acne. If you have tried everthing and are out of ideas then it wouldn't hurt to consider an elimination diet. I also avoid foods with a high glycemic index. BR lotion p50 w/phenol also helped topically. It was an ugly 2 weeks but it cleared 60% of my cystic acne up. Prescription retina-a did the rest. I know your pain and the worst part is not understanding what you're doing wrong, especially when you try SO hard to do everything right. I think your fabulous btw. Love your personally and sense of humor. You are very real and I appreciate that.

I have considered breast reduction but too scared, lol! Finding bras and stuff is not too bad you just will pay more than average sized bras. You also need to not depend on the mall as generally don't make anything over a DDD.

My new year’s resolution actually started a few months ago, why wait for January 1st when I can start now. Lose weight but here’s what I’m doing different than the other 50 times I said that and it’s actually working, I ditched the scale. I’m not monitoring or measuring I’m just little by little trying to exercise more, eating less crap and it’s working and becoming a real habit. I almost want to cry, I’ve never been obese but something about not fitting in your clothes is the most depressing thing. You almost give up. I haven’t lost a ton but my confidence has skyrocketed. I’m not chasing a number I’m after this feeling, it’s amazing how changing my perspective has done so much

With retinols it’s SUPER important to only use a pea sized amount. I’ve made the same mistake before, I thought it was fine because I only applied a thin layer over my face but it was more than a pea! which is what matters and my skin peeled and was red for a week. Or you might just be too sensitive for that concentration of retinol! Either way retinols can be great for acne prone skin but they are a delicate art to use lol

Samantha, I actually started watching your channel consistently this year when you did your skin care video talking about Sunday Riley. In the video you said you'd never had acne before, even as a teen. I never had acne before and somehow developed adult acne. It sucks because it is often worse then teenage acne and I feel like nothing will make it completely go away. I feel like society also judges you for not "taking care of it" and I catch myself in the mirror and say "I'm too old for this shit" "why is this happening to me" "why won't it go away". But I am glad it brought me to your channel. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Enjoy Mexico and I can't wait to see what awesome videos you have in store. ❤

The retinol... 1% is really strong.... super strong! Best way to begin retinol to avoid the side effects is to work your way up... I’ve been stuck on 0.04% for a year but I find that it’s enough.. Skin goes raw if I go any stronger. I’ve been mixing my 0.04 gel (from doc... I’m Canadian and told her I needed it for acne but mainly use it for anti-aging) with drunk elephant Vit C and it really does clear up my bumps/clogged pores when I get them...

2k19 goals, actually some revolve around your “problem w the beauty community video”. It rly made me think.
    - consume wisely. I deleted my Instagram & Facebook for good as well as unsubscribed to over 20 channels I found myself disinterested in/or being entertained by useless drama. Supporting what I support, not supporting what I don’t want to support!
    - practice mindfulness and awareness.
    - allow myself to feel anxious prior to going to the gym .. but actually go anyways :)
    - replace my phone use with reading a book
    - try new things by myself and with my partner.
i think that’s it! love you and thank you for your insight and humor. Your intelligence is valued deeply
