    beautiful city with a touch of Scotland, very clean streets, splendid arcades and monuments with plenty of woodlands and countryside around and a city by the sea . A very agreable city to live in

    My wife and I were in Newcastle in October, and I do miss it. We're from Atlanta, and it's easy to see why Atlanta and Newcastle are sister cities. Both are fabulous cities with a lot of culture. Sometimes I dream about being an expat and moving Tyneside. Howay the Lads!

    My last trip to Newcastle was in about 1980. I was living in Sydney in those days and Newcastle was one of my favourite places to visit. There used to be a restaurant in Hunter Street called Hungry Johns, which always gave customers an enjoyable meal.

    A truly wonderful city ruined by the infestation of students, beautiful buildings torn down to house them, and our nightlife ruined by them, and yet still they come.

    • @papiofist
      @papiofist 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And why do Universities exist? To enrich human knowledge, to contribute to a core part of the nation's infrastructure, to generate employment and output, encourage dynamic growth in cities, bring high-value jobs to regions where there are not so many to be found, encourages spending... I think your response hasn't been considered at all. You might find students irritating, but they contribute a lot to any city. I am from Bristol and have recently visited Newcastle. It's a beautiful city in terms of it's history, arts, and surrounding countryside. I felt no hostility at all from the students, they just seemed to mind their own business. Also, why wouldn't you want your city to be teeming with young, attractive and intelligent people? I found Geordie's to be incredibly kind and helpful, but not on a Friday night - there is a big drinking problem and the students are not at the core of it. I hope you don't take offence at my comment, every city in the UK has it's pros and cons. Take care.

      You're so right about the buildings, it's disgraceful.

      Yes I remember going down town for the first time in the 90s and was brilliant because you would always get chatting to locals from around Newcastle and would frequently bump into people you knew. That's all been lost now.

      Sorry but Universities are now just another money making industry. £8 -30K a year is incredible. The majority of students never end up there chosen career and end up in lower paid jobs with tens of thousands of debt to pay off. University for most is three or four years of drinking and partying and a few hours of the week in a classroom. Of course the majority of us Geordies don't hate students, they contribute a lot financially towards the area and generally are decent people.
