    The reason the warranty is less on external drives: They're external, which means more wear+tear from movement, not being attached to a substantial frame. Additionally, the included sata-usb bridge and power adapter and cables are built to a price. Which component fails first (mtbf)? All of the components are covered by the same warranty term, so they build them to outlast the warranty to a relative percentage of profitability.

    Does the transcoding processing effort depend more on the target resolution than on the source resolution? Obviously if they are both the same, then no transcoding is required, however transcoding from 4K to 1080p would probably be more resource intensive than 4K to 720p. My thinking is that the program will have to encode the outgoing stream to the outgoing resolution and I think that the higher the outgoing resolution, the more resources it would take.

    I already have an 5500 XT, and I'm about to get an Ryzen 3950X. I'm going to do x265 encoding so should I let the 3950X do the encoding, or the 5500 XT, or do I need an Quadro P2000 to get the fastest times?

If you put a graphics card into your server, do you need to set the BIOS to use the graphics card on startup in order for freenas to use it for the Hardware Acceleration or can you just connect a card up and carry on setting the acceleration up without doing anything to the BIOS???

I have 4k content for myself but I want to optimize smaller files for my other remote users. And if I can, would Plex automatically pick the correct version based on the user?

    hey, maybe a silly question, but i'm really not computer smart. and i have my plex library spread over 4 6tb disks right now, and i wanted to use unraid to make a raid array but i am scared to do it because i don't want to have to redownload my entire library, i have a terrible download speed. my question is, is there a way for me to add all the disks to an array without loosing data, and adding another 6tb drive for parity?

    • @Animalwon
      @Animalwon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have read that starting out with 1 disk then adding each drive in a separate cycle would keep you safe, since each added drive would require the raid to copy the data to the new drive... But i am waiting to Jason to give his views.

    • @joester4life

    Using a threadripper system for plex is too costly? I use an older i3-2260(?) Lenovo as my server, while having the video's on a homebrew NAS. I only have 1 or 2 users and files are in MKV x265 format. No issues even when someone is running Netflix or Hulu at 4k.

    I have a question that might be best for a whole video, As an ESXI user, Should i swap from running Freenas in a VM, to Unraid in a VM, or Would Unraid be a good enough replacement for ESXI all together?

    • @johngaltline9933
      @johngaltline9933 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very limited experience with various hypervisors including ESXI, trying various things for my server. Once I tried UnRaid, I never had a reason to look at anything else or go back to anything else.
      On running unraid in a VM, it is doable, but a pain, as unraid needs to read the unique UUID of the USB flash drive it is installed on. if you can pass through all the hardware directly to the unraid VM it will work, but at that point I think you're better off running unraid on bare metal and using it to manage your VMs. Just to play with it and see how it works a VM works fine, but for actual deployment, unless there is some function that it doesn't support (I'm not aware of any) you're better off running Unraid on the bare metal.
      Unraid's only real limitation right now is the 30 drive limit. while this is more than enough for most people, if you have dozens of drives to connect it could be a drawback. It's easy enough to work around, however, with hardware RAID if you need all the drives in one pool. if separate pools work for your use, you can add ZFS pools outside of the main array.

    • @Uplinkpr0
      @Uplinkpr0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johngaltline9933 the ability to float VMs between servers is probably the only reason keeping me with esxi but I do like the idea of being able to expand my array easily with unraid it might be worth a switch.

      That’s a business level of data so there is money to do it. Backup the same as any small business. Online backups and offline backups. It requires storage. Drives or tapes. Then it’s math.
      Lots of large drives, probably a raid type or parity. Then tapes if necessary. Tapes seem to be much more expensive than drives.

    I'm needing a newer NAS system (currently limited to a 500 GB Buffalo NAS bought like ~10 years ago). But I've got extra cpu's and motherboards with ram installed. For a simple file server I'm thinking that re purposing an I5 or core 2 duo should do the trick for me. Is there any gotchas I should look out for? Currently I've also got Drobo V2 usb but it's getting long in the tooth and needs to be connected to a windows or mac system. I know they have professional NAS's , but would like to re purpose old hardware if I can. I'm thinking Freenas on a Core 2 duo would be fine for serving up files for movies and using for file storage. Any tips (mostly a single user on my plex system)?

    • @Animalwon

      I have read that a dual core is powerful enough for a NAS or file server.

    • @joester4life
      @joester4life 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suspect it depends on the drives and SATA speeds. A 10 year old system vs. something that's like more than 10 years processor would be different. But I'm sure that NAS has a slower professor and drive speeds.

    Jason, you mention doing something about your background - Why not paint it as a "green screen" and superimpose any background you want when you edit your videos? Doing this means you can change it at a moments notice, and frequently. You can even superimpose PC wallpapers, if you don't have your own collection of photos. If your wall is White, you can probably get away with using colored lights to make it GREEN enough for getting the same Green Screen effect.
    Update": oops, you already addressed GREEN SCREEN use!

    Someone complaining about robot vacuums obviously doesn't have pets that shed a lot and love to play in the yard and back in the house constantly. I decided to get mine after I vacuumed and then had to get down and look under a bookcase and noticed that the floor was still covered in dog hair only moments after I vacuumed. Don't whine about getting a good vacuum either as we've had only Dyson vacuums since the 90's so it doesn't matter as they can't catch everything... the robot just keeps it clean(er) by running every day and helping keeping the mountain of hair and dirt my dog brings in at bay.
    As for Dyson being a good investment... heh... you obviously never had the first hand held they released in 2006... ran full power for a whopping *6mins* before needing a couple of hours to recharge and it cost like $400. And that died within two years... Totally worth it... not. Don't get me wrong, I like the Dyson vacuums and they _can_ be good, as long as you are not the suckers that buy the first or probably even the second versions of them like my family has been.

    @williamhustonrn6160 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason they sell them cheaper in Enclosures is due to manufacturing tolerances and trying to purchase parts the cheapest possible. When they assemble the moving bits that go into each hard drive, they have a test in which they are energized and listened to in a quiet room to listen to the harmonics of the drive before the platters are installed if it falls within a specific range, they have figured out that the drives will last longer with parts from those harmonic ranges and any that fall outside those ranges they staggering them along different products based on expected life. It cost too much to make parts more precise, so they manufacture them based on a ratio of precision output to cost and just creating other products with different run life based on expected life from the harmonics. This is why occasionally you will see massive discounts on the enclosure drives because they probably had an abundance of the lower tier parts that month and need to clear inventory of them and they expect people using an enclosure HHD to rarely use it to really witness the spin time required for it to die.
