3:00 You might wonder why he's tapping on the table while the tea is pouring. Having lived in Hong Kong, it's the way they thank the person pouring the tea for them. You pour the tea for your elders / friends before you pour for yourself.
Story goes, the emperor was traveling incognito. One day, at a stop, the emperor got up to pour tea for everyone. They wanted to get up and bow for him, but because the emperor was traveling in secret, they could only tap their fingers on the table as if they were bowing with them. The rest is history.
I watch so many food vloggers but noone speaks about food the way Lucas does with detail and history. Often they just stuff their faces and just talk about the taste of what they’re eating. Lucas needs his own food show 👍🏼
The fact that I know many of the staff of this restaurant shown in this video because I live nearby (Kennedy Town) and I would occasionally visit this dim sum restaurant to have the Siu Mai, beef balls, fried milk etc. gives a special feeling to me.
I like how Lucas speaks so fast trying to pack all history, theory and stories of the food he introduce, really feels his passion for HK cusine! There are also other late night dim sum in Tai Wai, but this is really historical and authentic grass-root dim sum place
Lucas is so talented. Love the way how he explained everything that western audiences can fully appreciate while capturing the essence of the culture. Great videos!
he’s so knowledgeable on everything. the way he talks keeps ur attention and the energy throughout is so infectious. great host honestly shoutout lucas :)
So amazing these HK people.. At 3 am they go for dimsum.. And salute for the seller that already senior people but still very energetic making dimsum.. Two thumbs up
I used to go here nearly every week when I studied in HK around 15 years ago. So happy to see them still going strong, many many great memories of it. Had my first (though not last by any means) chicken's feet there, along with many other amazing yum cha I still think about now.
An interesting fact about this place is that its near the University of Hong Kong! Student dormitories normally have hall activities until late night so its a tradition for them to have morning tea “早茶” afterwards! Most HKU students probably has eaten here before 😂
I really enjoy to see Luca's video. He always have passions and I can tell he actually enjoy all foods. Not as a food journalist, but as a normal customer like we the normal people.
This is the first time I learned that Dim Sum means whatever your heart decides, and I love it! My Chinese teacher just taught us that Dim Sum means snacks which always made me wonder how heart (sum) related to snacks.
I love this guy, these videos are so cosy feeling, and HK is such a great city with many nooks and corners to hide out at which lends to that feeling. I really yearn to visit HK again
Was recommended this place by a local when I went to Hong Kong couple weeks ago. Can only agree with everything said in the video!! A must visit definitely 💯
I love love love these sorts of tiny small eateries in HK. Big fancy restaurants are great sometimes, but these little places where everyone's crammed in on tiny round tables and stools is the quintessential HK eating experience.
I remember going to this spot after nights out with my classmates while on exchange in HK. The mix of young kids there for an after party snack and oldies getting their breakfast was exhilarating. Super nice spot!
When lau sa bao are fresh, the filling is approximately 27 million degrees. Do not joke around with that stuff. It is HOT! I have fond memories of burning my face off trying to eat them.
Testing dim sum in the 70-80s was surprisingly the Siu Mai, as it was the most elaborate in variety of ingredients & complexity of flavors. IMO, It, Har Gow, Cheng Fun, Char Siu Bao are my testers.
the main purpose of washing your plates and bowls in wash tea is to warm up the plates so that your tea and foods stay warm longer - what I was told in Hong Kong
i always thought the utensil washing thing was a societal habit cos of SARS. too many times i was sipping the "free" cups of hot tea at ccts before i realised it was for utensil washing
that place is super confident in the dim sum. they steam their lo bak goh. Most places will pan sear it because you can hide a more lacking base in the savoriness. *raises a glass* nice.
You should have mentioned the finger tapping on the table thing when someone pours you tea - basically a way to say thank you/kowtow. XD That place is indeed great. Nearby in SaiYing Pun on Pok Fu Lam road and 1st Street is "Three Uncles" dim sum joint. A fave of Bourdain. Opened for many decades. The original brother/uncles have recently retired but young gen family members keeping the place going. Three Uncles is not necessarily open to public at 3AM but they're cooking around then and you can get takeout of a bunch of dim sum items if you're nice.
The way this guy talks about food gets me so excited about it. Like I want to book a flight to Hong Kong just to try all this stuff for myself
Me too
Just do it
Lucas got a knack for this. Amazing!
I live on the same street.
Lucky me 😉
or any dimsum place near you
Shoutout to Lucas for being an ambassador of Canto culture in the West!
Hong Kong no long has the standing to represent Canto culture, culinary or otherwise.

Dim Sum is like Ice cream. No matter how much you have. You'll always want more.
The best thing that happened was Lucas as the Host of this. His way of explaining the tone and all the choice of words are what made it all 💯
Lucas is the best host! he is so passionate and makes everything feel so delicious and amazing! Got to try the lava buns when I visit this fall.🤩

I'd happily watch an hour of Lucas breaking down the different dim sum dishes, since there are so many, and have so much history behind them.
It's very appropriate that Hong Kong food culture takes over Bon Appétit. It's the best food ever.
Absolutely adore listening to Lucas talk about HK watching him eat and cook. Such a great teacher!

yes! lots of HKU hall residents and post-LKF clubbers here at 3am, followed by the uncles reading newspapers as the sun rises
Was looking for a HKU comment once I saw 3am dim sum lol
Yep! I came here many a time after a night of drinking while studying at HKU!
Can some one twll me the name of the place so I can save it on Google Maps for future travels?
