It’s time for a Korea vs Germany drag race!
Mat’s lining up in the Kia Stinger GT against the Volkswagen Arteon R Shooting Brake. Think this is a bit of a pointless race? Well once you see the stats you’ll realise there’s a method behind our madness!
Starting with the Kia Stinger GT, it’s housing a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet which can produce 366hp & 510Nm of torque. It’s RWD, and it weighs in at 1,855kg.
As for the Arteon, well the engine size is much smaller! It’s powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol engine which can produce 320hp & 420Nm. However, it has two big advantages over the Kia - it’s lighter (at 1800kg) and it’s equipped with AWD!
So how do you think it’ll play out - will AWD power snatch it for the Arteon? Or will the more powerful Kia win it? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

The Arteon is a lovely bit of kit. Needs a more interesting powertrain though. The 5 Cyl turbo would have been amazing

I agree the 2.0 TSI is getting a bit old now since they're putting in every R model... The 2.5 would really help move the Arteon upmarket which is what VW is trying to do.

A shame VW corporate politics nerfed the Arteon, as it could have been a great alternative to the S4/5, but no can't have VW being better than Audi.
the engine in the Arteon is far better than the current S4/S5 engine, in terms of modifying at least. the previous Supercharged V6 in the S4/S5 was the last great tuning engine
@@LeJunny Lol wut? The 3.0 in the B9 gains 90hp from a stage 1 flash on pump fuel. 130hp on ethanol. Torque figures are in the 700s NM.

No market. We had the Insignia OPC, Mondeo ST and MazdaSpeed 6 who just didn't sell that well. It's actually a surprise VW managed to sell a performance estate, as they're usually restrained by Audi in that segment.

Not the stinger GT(it's overrated, more overrated than the M5 for what it deserves), and the Artegon isn't so great to get more fame. So none of them is actually underrated.

@Connor Orrino in Germany we have the AWD-Version even.
Great content as usual. Only thing thats sucks is that mostly all races happen in rain or best case scenario in damp conditions. I know the airport has tight schedules but this does not showcase the true capabilities of the cars be it acceleration or braking.
Drag race more normal cars like this instead of some expensive car Mat :)

You shouldn’t use launch control with RWD Stingers in less than ideal conditions. You should mash the gas from a dig using the auto hold feature. It will start much more consistently that way.

VAG is going all electric in the next two years, and they are using turbo hybrid powertrains to fill the gap. there will never be another new VR6. also the VR6 is over 30 years old now.

Love your videos and comparison's. 2 things I think you could improve on is when you do you're "what exactly happened" segment. Don't show the 1/4 mile time for the last run. Say the (enter vehicle) had a best 1/4 mile of (enter time) over X runs....something like that.
Other thing, when you do the rolling race and the vehicle is put in manual mode. Just put the car back into D once you go 100% throttle and let it shift itself. Some comparison's, like this, it doesn't matter but others do. I know some of you....Matt....have had issues shifting at the right time while in manual mode.
A drag race with a VW T5 or T6 in their most powerful versions with Automatic Gearbox would be interesting because they are pretty fast for such big heavy cars

and had price like a Stinger 😉 @hon solo Stage 1 takes Stinger to 460-490hp
It’s VW. Power doesn’t mean much in many cases. Their engines often don’t stack up well on paper but beat most others out there in the real world. German engineering…

Fucking irrelevant for daily driving here in the USA.
Yeah, I've had my Stinger GT for almost 2 years now....can't imagine it not being AWD. I mean if I was tracking it (which it is not a track car) it would make sense to be RWD only, but for the occasional moment where I need to be a complete tool it's nice to know that it's going to hook up and pull.
See I am the opposite I have a 2022 Stinger GT and would not want the AWD version the RWD is a lot more lively and fun to drive.
@@David-vg8ou I think that my lively driving days are behind me. I haven't bought a non-AWD car in about 10 years. 😁 I'm not drifting or worried about on throttle oversteer coming out of a corner where I live right now.....kind of wish I was sometimes.
I think you should do a third rolling race with cars in sport mode and the gearbox in auto to see the difference in the kick-down.

I'd love to see a dragrace with the BMW M3/M4 RWD vs xDrive, I'm so curious to just how much difference there is between those two. And then maybe throw an Audi in there for reference, perhaps an RS6.
If its against the m3 and the m4, since they technically are the same platform the best Audi to compete with it. Or rather a fair comparison is the RS5 since its the M3 and M4 competitor

@@izzytherat1 In what engine configuration specifically? Most of their modern engines are pretty solid. As a whole they’ve improved leaps and bounds from where they were even 5 years ago. They’re still economy brands, but vastly more appealing than they used to be. The Stinger’s engine is shared with the G70, so it was given a bit more attention than others offered by Hyundai/Kia.

Absolutely love my Stinger. Would have been great to see this in the dry. RWD v 4WD in the wet is always a one way result. More Stinger on CarWow!

Launching a 4WD car up against a 2WD in the wet is a waste of time. Should do a first gear rolling race from like 15kph…. Take most of the traction out of the equation. Still like the vid, nice work!

@@JGreen444 in Canada we can’t get rear wheel drive and we only get the fully loaded “GT2” trim. We do get a standard LSD with the AWD which I understand my American friends do not get. Product planners at Kia keeping busy it seems!

I think you should test the kick down of the cars it the sportiest mode. If you do it in comfort mode, you're just testing how the manufacturer tuned it, if you do it in sport mode, you can see what's the best that car can do.
So unfortunate that they didn't end up going for the VR6 in the Arteon R.. Would've made it so much cooler.

@@ethanwaterfield3830 @Enviro_400_life This is not a 1200 kg hot hatch where it will mess up the handling, it's already a 1800 kg huge-ass sedan. Have you driven one and know this from experience? I have driven the 4-cyl and the handling is already nothing to clap your hands about. Even the old CC is more sporty my guys. :-)
@@HForceClan yes my Ol’ man literally picked an Arteon R shooting brake a couple of months back and tbf for a VAG car it handles a lot better than earlier cars, a lot more chuckable down a back road compared to even a last gen RS6.
I think the prob with the vr6 is its under powered NA and uses more fuel than its v6 competitors. With that said i still love the motor. I never flocked to the best MPG when shopping for a car. The VR6 never made class leading hp in stock form either And now with ICE being killed off id be surprised if they boosted it because its all about best mpg number to corporate. Maybe to replace a v8? Never understood why audi didnt boost it and throw it in the s4? The motor has big potential. But thats why i think its not offered. Just my opinion i could be wrong

Just like how you give the 1/4 mile time for the cars. I think you should also give the distance each car took to stop in the braking test
If it was completely dry, the race of course would have been closer but I still don't think the Stinger would win.

I remember when £52k got you an e92 m3 which at the time was peak super saloon (even though it was a coupe but still….) I had one a couple years back and the original sales receipt was for £56k with a bunch of options. Barely get a coupe golf thingy with a 4 Cyclinder for that these days

My Husband used to have a 2018 Kia Stinger GT but sold it for a BMW M3 Comp but the stinger was a bloody good car.
I have owned a 2018 Stinger GT here in Australia, for 3 and a half years now, still love it, it's unique looking, and it's in my favourite Deep Chroma Blue ( Dark Blue ) exterior colour, not available as standard in the UK and USA or Canada. 😊
Yep! Got one of the rare indigo editions here in the states with deep chroma blue and the gts d awd powertrain, best of both worlds! My favorite color.

All-wheel drive all day every day. Always great to see these drag races on wet or damp tracks. The Kia is a great car, but would be nice to see a AWD version.
They make an AWD version.
AWD adds expense & weight, only helps in the snow or rain. RWD with lsd is the better option.

The stingers engine is awesome. Supposedly its fully Forged out the box and with a proper exhaust on sounds the absolute bollox... Out of ALL new cars, it's one of my favourites for sure.

Plenty of stingers around now around 500bhp with a few mods and a tune.
The awd stinger would crush that Arteon R in a quarter mile.

This is very surprising, especially given that the stinger is rated at a 12.9 1/4 mile and 4.8 0-100. Most other reviewers seem to beat the benchmark not miss it.
