We just got back from Germany where we rented a standard economy Golf, only the guy on the counter said we have a brand new GTI if we wanted to take that… better still it turned out it was a Clubsport! Needless to say in the 4000km we put on it over the 2 weeks it got well bedded in. Apart from a bit of wild torque steer at times the GTI CS is a fantastic all rounder. It was still pulling like a freight train at 261kph / 162mph heading South back to Berlin.
For me the GTD is the sweet spot. I really like fast diesels, and 200hp is enough to deal round town and enjoy some countryside roads also. Not forgetting fuel economy!

The soft limiters are the result of all the over enthusiastic stationary foot to floor specialists blowing their engines and complaining to VW so thanks to them.
@@glenclough9080 there’s a second to the 1/4 mile, basically the 0/60 time Rolling it’s another story the CS gets it’s noise in front just We’ve a CS and it boosts to 2.2 bar where the R I think it peaks at 2.4 bar.

So, these cars have adaptive gearboxes. Depending on how they’ve been driven before you race them will depend on how quickly they kick down, in either comfort or sport. To make things fair, you need to do a gearbox reset to make things equal. Has always been the case, can’t believe this has not been thought of before….
You can do a gearbox reset on VAG vehicles by leaving the car for more than 40mins, then unlocking, open the door (and leave open) and get in. Depress throttle fully then key ignition on (but not start) for 20seconds. Key off then release throttle and there you go, gearbox reset to factory default…

I would take the GTD 200hp is more than enough for every day and for some cheeky sneaky roads without forgetting the fuel economy and the fact that it's probably the last GTD.
I agree since I can refer this to my car that has 192 hp and weighs 1150 kg, so plenty of fuel economy too. Plenty of power for each day of the week! Bonus: It is a naturally aspirated 1.8 litre 4 cylinder angry boi -engine. Over 100 hp/litre stock and an impressive power to weight ratio, in addition to instant pull when hitting the pedal. Such great times these are!

Great video. Please more of videos like this. Normal average sport cars. I love to watch hyper cars and trash talk but this is more relevant to most people. Although we don't get Club Sport and GTD in the US. I'd love to see Club Sport vs R role race.

The R would win a drag race because of the AWD. But the clubsport would beat it on a racetrack because you only need AWD in tight corners, and for all the others you are carrying dead weight. ;)

But if I had to, I would choose the clubsport, because its more unique and more performance orientated. Depends of course on the financial conditions, because for that money you can also get a Megane R.S., or a Toyota Yaris GR.
@@Sandile_xulu Just have a look on your driving profile and on your budget. What is the car supposed to do? Is it daily driving in cities / motorways, etc.? Then a normal GTI or even the GTD would do the job. Maybe the GTD better if you have long ways to commute every day. There is also a performance pack for the standard GTI, which includes a limited slip differential (I would always recommend to order a proper mechanical LSD if the option is there!). GTE maybe if you are only doing short trips and you can charge it somewhere in your area. And have a look at other brands, too. Because they have very good products for a lot less price. Renault, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford... Less performance, but very emotional are the Abarth 595. Very individual cars, too.
VW definitely nerfed the GTD! There's no way a petrol equivalent can make the same torque as standard. I think it can easily be around 500nm standard since the petrol is 400nm.

The Goodyear Tires are actually a disadvantage. They've done the whole setup on the Potenza S005 and the Goodyear is also quite thinner than the Bridgestone which is better in the wet but not so good in the dry.

Diesel engines only rev to like 6k so every-time the GTD shifts gears the other 2 cars still have like 2k rpm to go. Think a better race would be normal golf vs GTI vs golf R. Winner is obv but makes more sense.

Verdict: If you plan on modding you’re GTI, buy the base model version. It uses the same engine as the Clubsport. Clubsport just is tuned more potently. If you aren’t planning on modding your car, buy the Clubsport

I’ve had an R (troublesome) but brilliant and steardy. I’ve had a 7.5 pp Gti and it’s easily the best daily , way more comfortable and efficient and USEABLE power I currently have a Gti mk8 clubsport and it completely beats the R for enjoyment but must admit , the normal Gti is all the car you ll ever need
For acceleration you need: BHP to weight ratio, Torque(at the wheels - IE high revs), Dual clutch transmission, Great Traction - Mid or Rear engine, Aerodynamics. That's why front engined saloon cars can never keep up with sports cars with similar BHP.

Yeah, it can be a limitation from the drivetrain (specifically the DSG) as all these have exactly 400 Nm of peak torque.
It's a 2l diesel. 400nm is about right for a decent powered diesel.

Diesel engines only rev to like 6k so every-time the GTD shifts gears the other 2 cars still have like 2k rpm to go. Think a better race would be normal golf vs GTI vs golf R. Winner is obv but makes more sense.

Clubsport definitely worth the extra with its stronger continental turbo.
Verdict:
If you plan on modding you’re GTI, buy the base model version. It uses the same engine as the Clubsport. Clubsport just is tuned more potently. If you aren’t planning on modding your car, buy the Clubsport

I’ve had an R (troublesome) but brilliant and steardy.
I’ve had a 7.5 pp Gti and it’s easily the best daily , way more comfortable and efficient and USEABLE power
I currently have a Gti mk8 clubsport and it completely beats the R for enjoyment but must admit , the normal Gti is all the car you ll ever need

For acceleration you need:
BHP to weight ratio, Torque(at the wheels - IE high revs), Dual clutch transmission, Great Traction - Mid or Rear engine, Aerodynamics.
That's why front engined saloon cars can never keep up with sports cars with similar BHP.
