    Outstanding video! Looks like you are waking up to the collectibles game. All price guides are just that: Guides. In this fast moving market, each customer must do his or her homework. Using the 1883-CC Morgan in MS63 as an example. PCGS price guide says this coin should retail for $450. However, checking on ebay the same coin can be had for less than $380 easily. There are several at $335 with no bids so far and remember this is on eBay! So, this coin can most likely be bought for even less with a little searching! You are right to be suspicious of price guides produced by the same people that grade coins. They have a vested interest in seeing their product valued most by customers. ( enough said on that point) I prefer recent auction sales. This IS the price customers are paying for coins. Using PCGS as an example, compare recent auction prices on THEIR app to their suggested retail price and then you will understand what I mean. I stopped looking at the NGC price guide almost two years ago. Just too far off from reality for me. Keep asking questions! Great topic! Thanks!!

      The first thing I learned getting into bullion and coins is the Redbook pulls numbers out of thin air. ( I think they use the very large auction house numbers where people have more money than sense). The first thing I learned after getting into slabs is that NGC/PCGS does the same thing with their prices. I've always used eBay sold listings as a realistic guide

    • @Ontario100
      @Ontario100 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@aaronayers5151 Yes, Redbook pricing methods are too out of date for today's market. The last Redbook I bought was a 2012. It is good for providing weights and background information. It is also good for spotting which coins are rare, but that is it. Pricing has to come from the market and these days that is one moving target!

    Pirate nice video. If your objective is to unload those slabs then you definitely can't rely on the prices PCGS puts up on their own website. Remember they will put the best possible prices sold so that to create hype and tell the public "see our graded slabs sell for the most money" but how much info are they holding back. Again their objective is to make money. Sell your coins at what you think it is worth, you may have to do research using items sold at auctions to determine a price. Some time in the future if they have not sold they you may have to drop the price. That is the risk of retail.

    Whatever PCGS or NGC thinks what a coin is worth is their opinion and value is subjective to them (Just like grading). I only use them to get a ballpark estimate on what a coin is worth and look at what ebay sold listings are at to see what people are REALLY buying these coins for on the real market. This is also why places like greysheet exist to see what coins are trading at on the wholesale market.

    Maybe a little of both from both companies. Recent sold auction prices, sold prices on ebay, not what people are asking, but what they actually sell for. Hi Pirate Stacker! Great video! PCGS and NGC are the two top best grading companies. The difference in price could be that one particular grading company hasn't updated their pricing lately. I experience has been that NGC updates the Morgan Silver dollar pricing about twice a year. 😎 I prefer NGC because they are near me in Florida, and NGC will allow both NGC and PCGS coins in their registry. PCGS no longer counts NGC graded coins into the overall collection completion, rating, or rank.

      Funny you should bring up the slabs themselves. I have several in which the insert rattles.....totally loose in the case itself. All you have to is gently shake them and you'll hear the defect. (and you thought only PCGS had "rattlers") 😏
      There's no exceptions either......from cents to dollars, moderns to ancients, you'll find a loose insert. Just last week one of my LCSs had a coin that I've been looking for that's in a NGC slab.....and what do you know, it's not even mounted right in the 4 prongs. 🙄
      Now let's talk about their labels.....granted every TPG service is going to make a mistake with their labels once in a while, but NGC are the kings of it. Upstate Coin and Gold had THOUSANDS of their ASE submissions come back with the wrong dates on the labels.
      To be fair though, their ineptness paid off for me a few years ago when a dealer submitted an 1881S Morgan that was struck thru to NGC. It came back as "MS 64, Obverse Struck Trhu". The dealer didn't notice the "Trhu" misspelling until after I purchased it. He said it's not often you find an error coin with a error label. 👍
      Idk what's going on at NGC with their quality control, but they've gotta step it up, because much of it just plain bush league.

    Personally I don't like either of them but since I'm a world coin guy I'd have to choose the lesser of two evils and go NGC as they're better at that. PCGS seems like the shadier of the two and give me snake oil vibes. Also I think you're absolutely spot on. I never even thought of that angle. Yet another reason I don't trust them. I personally really like my coins raw as I'm a collector who likes actually looking at my coins and through plastic is no way to view a coin. Especially toners. I have purched one single slabbed coin in my life and as soon as I got it home I cracked it out and threw it in a 2×2 and trashed the case. I kept the cert only because it has a true view but other than that they got the grade wrong. It was an SP not a PR. Also it was certaily a 64+ if not a 65, definitely not a straight 4. With absolutely no chatter, dings or noticable marks. Only slight hairlines in one part of the field and immaculate monochomatic deep turquoise tononing fully on obverse and reverse. You think these jokers would know the coin didn't come in PR but what are ya gonna do. Screw em. I'll use them if in the future when I get more advanced in flipping coins but for my personal stock, screw their registry, screw their stupid coin prisons, and screw their shady business model.

    You hit it in the head when you said the word "company". Yes all those grading companies exist for one thing; to make money. They are not grading coins out of the kindness of their hearts. What bothers me is that they put up prices on what their products sold in the past. So are they really fixing the prices on their products by creating a hype on what other people's past purchase. The reason why I said "their products" is because the products are those plastic slabs with their labels on them. The saying buy the coin for the coin not the plastic must hold true. You as the consumer must ask how much are YOU are willing to pay. Not some other dude who bought it a year ago. The prices they put is what their products sold at auctions like heritage and great collections but notice no Ebay. Maybe because for the same graded coin it can be sold on Ebay lower than that at Heritage so they would not include that? Who knows. How about retail why are they not included. Don't they set the market price also. This is the reason why I have issues with PCGS pricing their own stuff.

    Neither grading company has any business putting any suggested value on a coin. That's not their business and I don't like it. In reality you are going to get what a person is willing to pay.

      100%, It's only worth what it can sell for. I've found more often than not grey sheet is followed and it's probably 1/3 less than PCGS prices their coins...

    PCGS SWICHED MY COIN

  • @veritasfiles
    @veritasfiles ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, I don't have enough experience to say anything with authority. I think coin grading, in general, is a scam because it's subjective. You're never going to get to the point of an MS 62 being an MS 62 is and MS 62 because human beings are involved. As long as you don't have the same person with the same background and experience looking at the coins, you're going to see differences between one grading service versus another. My own sense of the grading services is that PCGS is generally preferred by the public, but I also have the sense that for every complainer you can find for PCGS, you can find virtually an equal number for NGC, it's main competitor. There likely isn't a massive difference between them, but apparently it's big enough to have the public landing on one side more than the other. The other grading companies are smaller, and so it's probably not fair to compare them in the same way. I like facts, weights, measures, and a total absence of subjectivity. That's why I stack the way that I do, and it's why I'm expecting wealth preservation over melt value, melt value over a nominal price increase, and a nominal price increase over a real rise in purchasing power when I look at my Silver & Gold. To be in the metals, you have to understand the metals. The same goes for grading. If you're not into dealing with bias, subjectivity, and the uneven performance that any given company can give you, then my advice...get out. I don't mean that in a harsh tone of course, but I'm blunt as a stone in real life, so I'm just sayin' it. If you truly love and/or enjoy the numismatics, then just stick those issues in your back pocket as things that go along with being in that area of stacking the metals. You're gonna get treated well and treated badly. You're going to get more objective grades, and you're gonna get subjective grades that just blow your mind. You're gonna have great experiences, and you're gonna have experiences that are all over the map. It's just part of the deal with numismatics. Again, this is coming from a novice, but over the last 15 years of stacking, these are the kinds of observations I can make about something that I'm not really involved in and not super knowledgeable about, so take 'em with several grains of salt. Keep stacking!

      @PirateStacker  ปีที่แล้ว

      As always you're spot on... I bring these issues up as I think they're valid questions that don't have any given answer. I think it, so you hear it... haha. Numismatics have layers and layers to them for sure, and you do take all the good with all the bad with all the subjective. There's nothing here that I can't get by or overcome, but if we don't question the authoritys on any given matter, than we really have no ground to complain about anything ever. It's hard for me to be a sheep. Thanks for watching my friend! Continue your' bluntness, it's refreshing.

    Both are shady because most newly minted coins and proofs are MS 69 or 70 quality. The assessments are done arbitrarily because I've sent a coin graded ms 64 by pcgs and ncg graded 68. I've seen 69 and 70s get flip graded. It's as vague as DNA results. Add to that they each say their proprietary grading method is not shared. Unless it's an ancient coin, what's the point of third party grading unless they are buying your coin?

      Great points and valid... I think it's become way overused in all honesty. And I believe it's all being done as a means to make more money, not to benefit the hobby. Thanks for watching & commenting.

    I don't know anything about graded coins. I have 5 - 10 coins in slabs but I bought them for the labels back when I (we) first started. So instead of commenting about that, let me tell you about my improvements in roller skating. My heel toe splits rolling backwards with a full circle turn is coming along very well. My strut walk is looking awesome too. It took me 4 months to learn it and another couple months to polish it to look soooooo smooth. 🔥🛼🛼👍😎

    I've always been told ngc is more trusted than pcgs. I've never used either of their services, but I have a coin coming from scstacker that I'm going to get graded and I really don't know who to send it to.. I'm a firm believer that huge corporate entities are all infiltrated by our government and they do whatever they want that will benifit them.

    • @PirateStacker

      Fully agree... NGC & Anacs had fantastic service and Anacs pricing is really great! PCGS cost the most and I still don't have my coins back after months already!

      Wait til CAC starts grading and slabbing later this year. Their standards are more stringent than the other grading services.
      If you want to send the coin out to the others though, I'd go with PCGS. Their turnaround times suck, (no matter the submission service) but they are slightly preferred by the majority of numismatists......and besides that, NGCs quality control is just plain heinous now.
