    40 years old and new haircut. Congrats and a good choice. I hit 60 next January and there is a Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 8 sitting patiently in the cabinet waiting for the special day. Slainte

    I managed to get my hands on four of these in California. I gave one to my realtor when my condo sold for well over asking price, gave one to my brother for his wedding and have two more, just for me. The realtor opened the one I gifted him and we enjoyed a fantastic dram! I also have a couple of "other" 25yr bottles, but think the Glenfarclas 40 was absolutely amazing!

    The sulphur might come from a more modern re-cask, since my understanding that "back in the day" most casks that were shipped to the UK were wet because bottling of sherry would be done in the UK - could be wrong though.

    Happy Birthday Dave and well done Time! A great way to celebrate, especially after the Commander N Chief review. You've earned a good splurge after that.

    When Dave reaches 50, get an Armagnac or Cognac. Very accessibly priced for what you get age wise.

    Hi guys

    The price of "old" whisky is quite unrelated to supply and demand. It's just "premiumisation". Distilleries are pricing "older" whisky on the basis of what they think the market (speculators included) will bear. I haven't seen, but another whisky tuber said Horst had earlier done some investigation (& maths) on the cost per year of keeping whisky in casks, and it was a not a big number, only a few pounds/dollars/euros per year. The costs for whisky are largely up-front (all aspects of production) or at the end (incl. sales & liquor taxes, etc.).
    If you look at some distilleries' ranges, you can compare the prices on their, say, 12, 15, 18, 21 year releases, and typically the price jump is very far from linear despite being 3 years for each of those steps.
    Whisky "age" is an ideal attribute for premiumisation because of its (relative) intangibility, and its suitability for mythologisation or fetishisation. We all (or almost all) too readily fall for the idea that greater whisky age equates to greater complexity and desirability. That's not to say there's no truth to that to some extent, and e.g. 15 years olds often are more complex than 12s, etc., but it's far from the case that all whiskies continue to get better after, say, 15-18 years. Most whiskies sold at 10-12 years are designed to be so from the get go, with stronger wood influence that would be quite unsuitable if the distillery had intended that whisky to remain in the same casks for 20+ years. Glenfarclas are noted for favouring third- and fourth-fill sherry casks for their older whiskies for that very reason.

    Nice one. A gentleman's charms only increase with age.
    If you have a 40yo whisky when you're 40, and a 50yo whisky when you're 50, what's the difference?

    • @Amaritudine
      @Amaritudine 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For a Glenfarclas like this, the difference between 40 and 50 year old is roughly NZ$20,000 if you're looking at full-size 700 ml bottles. I'm sure it's amazing whisky, but it's definitely a treat reserved for the ultra-wealthy.

    I'm loving the early mid-life crisis here. Relax. You have twenty years ahead before you consider mental and bodily malfunction. Talking of malfunction; The Whisky industry. Balblair 21 is £300. The 25 is £590. Glenfarclas were one of the last big value age statements. It was only about 3 or 4 years ago my brother bought me the 25 when it cost about £125. That was when I would still buy G&M bottlings because they were good value. WTF. Well, going back to Glenfarclas: It was they that had a distillery burglary a couple of years ago and the thieves knew exactly what go for. The old stuff. Glenfarclas also got scolded for using the word 'sherry' when their casks were seasoned outside the 'Sherry Triangle' and that is a big no no. When that news emerged it made it all the more apparent that the sherry in the whisky world has absolutely nothing to do with actual drinking sherry.
    My issue with Glenfarclas is that the whisky always tastes younger than the age statement suggests and that includes old age statements. I'm sure the Family Casks are where the good stuff actually resides but I can't afford them. I don't know which bodega they used to source their casks from but they give the impression of third or fourth refill now. Prepared casks are the order of the day today. No actual sherry at all. By the way, a lot of modern cooperages sulphur their casks even before they are sold to whatever buyer wants them. I've had serious sulphur taint from big names such as Longrow, Springbank and Kavalan.
    The age of this one means it might escape all of those criticisms. The only 50 year bottle I could buy for my 50th was a Balblair 1969 but that was out of my price range. (Chris Goodrum reviews that bottle on The Good Dram Show and very worth a watch), so I ended up with a very interesting 40 year Armagnac. I'm fairly certain that that full size bottle will better this Glenfarcas mini. I'm really glad you enjoyed it though and happy 40th Dave - you're not an old fogey.

    I prefer the Macallan 12Y to this Glenfarclas 40Y as the Macallan is more complex and delicious.
