Glenfarclas 105 (22 Year Old Edition): The Single Malt Review

  • Glenfarclas 105 is one of the most ubiquitous cask strength Single Malts on the market, and once in a while Glenfarclas releases a special age stated version. This specimen is is 22 years old, and (for that age) still radically strong at 60% abv (120 proof). It isn't a subtle whisky by any stretch. It's a brutally flavorsome, rough and tumble dram that acutely focuses the Glenfarclas style.

The cloudiness is a thing of beauty.

I love the regular 105, and wish I could find the 22 year old edition... Wish me luck!

It's still available here, so there must be some around.

Glenfarclas are know to put the raw whisky at 70% ABV into the casks used for maturation. Therefore they can make a 22 year old 105.

Great review. I am lucky enough to have two bottles of this in the stash. The scotch mist was incredible. I am going to have fun with that when I crack one. Interesting discussion regarding previous reviews you have done and how you would rate them differently now. I always thought your Kilkerren 12 scores were a little low. It would be interesting to know what you thought of it now.

I have a tormore 13 from Gordon & McPhail cask strength that goes from clear to milky upon the addition of a tiny amount of water. Reminds me of adding water to a pastis.

The 22yo 105 was put out in celebration of 50 years of the Glenfarclas 105 bottling. I don’t think you will see another 22yo 105 for along time.

Nice mist... too much water out of the gates though... I like to ease into it.

Awesome review guys! Gotta ask how much this bottle went for in your neck of the woods?

You can pick this up here for around $NZ 230, which is $USD 150

Thanks for the reply! Pretty darn reasonable considering the specs here!

I never got over that shock of pepper/alcohol - The Glenfarclas 105 with 10 years is so much better and cheaper IF you can find a bottle :-)

Sadly I haven't see a bottle of the pre-NAS 105 for many years.
