Whether Jamaica is a republic or not is neither here no there . Every Jamaican merely needs to dip into the works of Andre gunder frank - the dependency theory .Jamaica is often just a satellite of the large metropolis like - USA - and were corralled to the institutions imf & world bank which was always rigging against them . The comprado classes in Jamaica served to maintain this status quo .One don’t have to wait for Irina to impart knowledge .It’s there before every Jamaican who so chooses to do their own research

I see a lot of people using the word 'civics' which tells me you are old probably from the 90's or 80's. That has changed because i have learnt this in high school (graduated in 2013), and to a lesser extent in social studies in primary school although not in depth.

Why Jamaicans need to be taught by a Ukrainian about Jamaica? Why are so many Jamaicans so eager to sit and be taught by another although knowledge from anywhere is better than the continuance of willing acceptance of ignorance. Why wouldn't most Jamaicans not do research of their own especially those who are NOT illiterate and can navigate the internet sources as they do with social media platforms? There are numerous educational sources of reference on just about any subject matter for free. Just as i'm quite sure the good lady here has used herself many times making such informative pieces as such. Why not read it for ones own self? Without such knowledge how would one attempt to add educated substance to a discussion regarding the pros and cons of whether Jamaica should remain under present monarchial rule or become a Democratic Republic? Some don't have a clue as to what they have right now or the difference between the two.

This was an excellent presentation, and I loved the way you brought the points both for and against the Queen remaining as head of State in an orderly and easy to understand manner. As a son of Jamaican parents who left the Island back in the early 50s. I think the argument for Jamaica becoming a Republic may be more of an emotional one, than an economic and practical one, although I certainly do understand those emotional sentiments and think that they do carry much weight. For such a small Country, Jamaica's footprint and impact upon the World has been such a large one, that I think that most people already think of Jamaica as a proud, sovereign and Independent Nation in its own right. Nobody really thinks about the Queen when they think about Jamaica. Jamaica is one of those Countries, where many people even if they only have a small percentage of Jamaican blood, cling tightly to that Jamaican identity and it defines them. Given the cost of such a transition, which I never really thought about before, my own view is that things should remain as they are. Once again Sis Irie, you have done an excellent Job, and I really wish the Jamaica Tourist Board, would engage you in some of their promotional content and publicity concerning the Island...as far as I'm concerned you are as Jamaican as anyone else, and a great spokesperson for our beloved Country.

Perhaps one day Irena will discuss and break down the concept of “cost” the same way she did “independent”. If it means some of the taxes paid by the Jamaican people will be returned to Jamaican workers to update textbooks and publications, signage, etc, I dont think that should be considered a significant enough hindrance, especially since the transition(and any associated costs) could be stretched over a period of several years to make it financially manageable.

Being a Jamaican, I must say I never knew this much about our constitution, was never taught it in elementary or high school ( at least not when I was going decades ago and by then they had stopped teaching Civics) .... Guess, I would have known more if I did political science or law etc, but my love was for biological sciences. This certainly gives one a lot to think about when the issue of Commonwealth vs Republic comes up again and I am sure what you have given is the basics and could go much further and more detailed. Raped in front of our children humiliation took our wife's raped them infront of us the men they did that too after the abolished slavery they threw us off the land on to the streets thats how the ghettos of kingston was formed turn around and gave us nothing whilst giving the slave masters £2400.per slave that were lost send to Britain and Scotland Ireland brought those natives to the island and cut up lands in 5000 acres and gave them divided and broke up upr families and you want that woman to be head of state is like being raped by an assailant and then force to marry him have kids for him and take orders from him for the rest of your life every time I hear about the royal family is sick me to the stomach.

As a Jamaican born in 1946 in St. Mary I would like to see Jamaica accept responsibility for itself. Jamaicans are a hardworking People, caring, Independent. Instead of travelling to other countries to make a living it would be more beneficial to the country for them to utilize their skills and commitment in the development to the Island. The Politicians also need to make policies that will be beneficial in retaining the Residents on the Island. We are a caring, fun loving people and if given the chance to rebuild the Country there will be no stopping the gains that could result, we could then live out the Motto, Out of many One!

When corruption and ignorance rule a country, there will be no real advancement, and the biggest issue colonized mentalities too much of it still remains in the country.
The worst pandemic of all RELIGION, far too many waiting for a savior to do their work, if you do nothing you get nothing, fear, divide and conquer is what rules everything.
Politics divide, religions divide, the power belongs to the people, when we recognize this as a people thats when we will achieve a better way of life.

  • @JKLoans

Thank you for this. You have explained this issue with more detail than most of the social studies and political science teachers I would have ever encountered in Jamaica. Especially love your reference of _'The Dismissal of 1975'._ - for a constitutional nut like myself, it is a textbook case for the reserve powers of the Crown or even President, should we have one. You are truly doing great work in educating Jamaicans about Jamaica; long may your passion continue.
To answer your question, I would consider myself to be a reluctant monarchist; yes, I respect the institution and the head of said institution but accept that given history, politics and even ethnicity, it might not be the most appropriate system of government to have. That said, I take the approach that insofar as the institutions are doing the job it is meant to be doing, we shouldn't change it for change's sake. A take the Australian approach though, which is that the conversation should at least be raised following the _'Demise of the Crown'_ (when HM The Queen dies).

Yes, I mentioned this in the video - there is a page where the work that has been done for Jamaica by the Commonwealth of Nations is mentioned:

Please also check the description for more links and info.
I couldn't find any particular benefits for being the part of the Commonwealth Realm though. Still waiting for people to point them out and will ask Government officials if I ever get a chance.

AMAZING content Irina! I never would have taken the time out to research all of that but I'm glad you put it in a interesting but clear and concise manner. I learned a lot. Looking forward to that Documentary. Keep up the good work Irina. My opinion tho, we(as country don't 'feel' independent knowing that those laws are written in our constitution. As well as the point to move forward and put the past in its place(not throw it away) is also important especially because of what happened back then and that things don't seem to be improving. Maybe its Civic Pride but just knowing that she still symbolizes something in our state today just doesn't feel right. And as a Monarchy I don't feel that we gain any benefit in our dealings with the UK. We have less ease of access to the UK than others who aren't monarchy but yet we are in the top 10 in terms of Immigrant population in UK. There may be more to it than that tho, so whatever happens, happens
