Little Englanders, your time is up and you are going down, one domino at a time, and it is a beautiful sight to behold. Murder, slavery, and imperialism do not a commonwealth make. Great to see Barbados recognising the emperor's new clothes for what they really are, and embracing their own identity and future.

Why should the UK pay anything? The slave trade ended nearly 200 years ago and those responsible for it are long dead. I will not support the payment of any compensation for something that I had no part in. The same can be said of everyone who lives in the UK today. You cannot change history but you can learn from it and move on. Are the Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch, Americans, Italians, Chinese and Turks also going to be asked to pay up? The slave trade was a worldwide industry, not just a British one. All lives matter regardless of colour, creed and gender, not just black ones.

Theres all this talk of full independence without true thought for what that means in practice. At the end of the day a nation as small as barbados is always going to be beholden to someone, either through trade or strategic influences. Much as i support the rights of all countries to determine their own future at the end of the day there is no such thing as true independence for a nation as small as barbados. Such countries are too small to truly define their future in the way they want, literally nobody gets that luxury, even Britain. Out of all the forces that strive for influence in foreign countries i would argue the commonwealth at least acknowledges more about their history than anyone else would care to do. You cant erase the past, only influence the future, and this refusal to accept the past could most certainly lead to a worse future. Nobody is ever free of influence, especially if youre a tiny island.

I don't think anyone in uk will be that bothered. It will probably benefit us by not having to worry too much if they have a massive natural disaster in the future also. It seems to be nothing but positives for this for all concerned.

@@candyman5912 Never been to barbados and will never go. I think the queen being head of state for all these countries is ridiculous and creates a responsibility for Britain, that we can do without. It's about time that they stood on their own and if I could vote for this myself, i would vote the queen out. It's an institution that has no relevance these days.

Interesting that the decision was not made through a national referendum but rather, by a few self serving politicians. Lord knows what the Island will gain from having an elected President as their head of State as that person will ONLY represent the people who elected him/her. The Governor General was the perfect form of Democracy, representing the Queen and in turn, all people of Barbados without any political ambition.
Good luck Barbados ... as a Canadian I regret that you felt you had to spit in the face of my 95 yr old Sovereign but, whatever floats your boat. All the best ....

Well done Barbados. The last few decades have shown that the House of Windsor should be more properly called the House of Dullards, Adulterers, Perverts and Parasites. QE2 has as much charisma as a block of cement but is revered for this, much like Bobby Charlton. Once she's gone and people realise what we're left with well let's hope it won't take too long for us to join Barbados as a modern democracy.

Gladly a balanced debate - will UK media finally accept that you don't need a white racist/xenophobe to round every argument on race.
I'm leaning towards Kehinde general view TBH; reparation is easily kickstarted by fixing poverty - but either way, symbolism is better than tokenism...
