The best part about this channel is you guys are doing everything on a budget like most of us. Much better than another unnamed channel on here that pushes the most expensive stuff only
I was thinking the same thing, just drive the front up on ramps so the back of the gear box clears the ground on the way out and take the whole lot out. You'll probably find heaps of hoses etc you can replace at the same time. Easy to change all fluids. 10 birds one stone.
Good work. My old man replaced a zephyr 6 clutch by the side of a dirt road on his own. He did it with one hand too - he lost the other in an industrial accident several years before. Wish I had his gumption, but really happy to see you blokes with similar determination.
@@einfelder8262 Yes, they weren't good, but my point was people's resilience and focus on getting the job done. If we are going to holden/ford, that dual is done like a dogs dinner. The question these days is asian or european.
Great vid, informative as well as entertaining 👍👍👍 ....Everything is done properly with no shortcuts which translates into little or no "grief" down the track 😎
Should of used a engine crane to drop the gearbox. Pull the boots off inside, put 2 straps around the box (front & rear). Undo all your bolts and plugs and start lowering while guiding it backwards to clear the shaft. Takes about 20 minutes to completely remove the box
Any one can pay a mechanic to do a job. But if you have some mates couple of jacks and couple of blocks of wood anything is possible. And a lot more rewarding. If you had taken to some one to do they probably would not put a spacer behind of seal to relocate it. Good Job
Hands down not a job to do by yourself. That is a must especially on the ground. On a rack with a trans jack its a breeze to do. Good job on cleanliness of all the parts. That is a key point in doing proper repairs.
Use an engine Crain and take out the metal cover from around the gear sticks I replaced the clutch n rear main seal 4 hours to take the box out change the clutch n rear main seal n box back in driving by myself using an engine Crain makes it a lot easier and faster and safer than jacks
At work it took 2 of us 9 full hours to do a clutch in a gu patrol Ute. We made blocks to lift the cab for more clearance which made it heaps easier. So you did well mate 👍🏾
Easier to pull engine out if you have engine crane. Instead of buying the seal housing just buy the seal you can get them for $12 good idea about spacing it out
I have the same looking leak but I've heard it can actually be a seal between the sump and bellhousing and not the rear main.. I'm interested to see what it ends up being.
How hard was it to do because I have a gq and the gear box is blown and it also has a leaking rear main seal paying some on is not a option very limited budget
Use a engine crane, remove the rubber boots around gear selectors, climb under neath and remove the electrical plugs, remove tail shafts, undo bell housing bolts, slide the crane arm inside the car and put 2 straps around the gearbox (front and rear) and take up the slack. Undo you cross member bolts and lower the crane just a little till you can start wiggling the gearbox backwards, once completely free lower the box all the way down. If you have a old skateboard or something that you can lower it onto it'll make it easier to pull it out from under the car. Takes me about 20 minutes, but if you haven't done it before than might take ya about 40 mins to a hr

Ronnie Dahl?
Lucky the old man knows what he’s doing!! Lol
Good on ya fellas now that old rig will go another few hundred thousand Ks 👍
The coincidence of talking about oil leaks as a defender drives by at 1:09

Good tip on the thicker gasket for the rear main seal housing!
The one dislike was some one who didn't replace their clutch while doing a rear main

I pulled the gearbox out and put it back in lux with one trolly jack and one jack stand two nights it's great fun
Going by the title, I was thinking you finally found the badge on the front of it haha!

Having done this before-if you have an engine crane, its quicker and much easier i found to take the engine out instead
Your father has great knowledge love the vids
Same here, I was taught everything from the "old school" mechanics, even those ideas that nobody thinks of, my hat goes off to them.
Cheers Liam for that trout you gave me today it was bloody Beautiful

I like your detailing ability on the parts :)
Great to see an Australian show ,and doing like the average fella would do it NO lift, most sites they use 4 post or 2 post lifts

Hey Liam, could you please give the fans what they want. #TOEREVEAL
Have always pulled motor out for clutch work, so much easier and quicker.
Best trick is a strop and a piece of wood over the shifter hole, works a treat
Good effort boys, looks like a bastard of a job!
Clutch is mint it isn't touching studs yet
Where's that beach campspot towards the end looks amazing
Did gq utes come with full leaf suspension
yes
When to lads getting more stickers. I could use the extra 20hp lol
Like already said pull the motor out it’s quicker and easier to do
Well done Liam those box's are heavy bastards. A ''Speedi-Sleeve'' made by SKF could be available to suit that crank size if things go wrong again.
Next time separate the transfer case first it makes the job a lot easier
I would of just kept topping it up and had a old rug down where it gets parked at home 😂
Pulled one of those boxes before and I don’t want to again
That's a dumb idea. Oil will get on the clutch eventually.
@@einfelder8262 eventually, I left it for about five years no issue. But yeah eventually
Mate you can put the jack under a pallet and works sweet and thanks me later😄
I done my clutch on the verg out the front in less than a day nhalf
Using those concrete 'besser' block is dangerous. If you must use them, fill them up with concrete otherwise use timber blocks.
Rigs due for a paint or some raptor!! Should reach out to raptor

Well I guess I've got a rear main.. that likely explains the loss of engine oil between oil changes.
Had the same problem but i changed the sump gasket before pulling the box out n hasnt leaked since 🤷🏼♂️
