I had to give up on them as have neck problems & couldn’t blend at all due to lack of strength & suffered for two days just trying to do a swatch chart of the colors!! 😕
Thank you for your step by step instructions. The information is very beneficial and just the right pace for a beginner. There was a bit of fuzziness in the background sound but not enough to interfere with the lesson. Love all of your videos. Thank you again.
So glad I found you.. I just took my first drawing class (it was charcoal) and can’t wait to get to pastels. You validated a lot of what I just learned.
Thank you so very much Susan! I have been trying to paint with beginner’s videos for months and was always so disappointed with what I did. This is the first painting I have done that I like!!! I am so delighted! You shared many concepts that helped me that I know I will use every time I paint. Identifying which pastels of each value I will use to start, making my marks along the shape of the apple, just to name a couple. I think it will be fun to practice painting lots of apples with different colors. Thank you again! Oh and the sound was fine.

I've been working with colored pastels recently doing abstracts and something called guided drawing, but yesterday I did a pear and today an apple, and I love how they came out! I did marker value studies first as well. Last year, I was doing fruit studies in watercolor, but the cool thing about pastels is how you can fix your mistakes :) Your instruction is so helpful.

My first time using pastels. Thank you! My pastels are called 'soft pastels' (generic brand) but they were very hard indeed! Ive had them unused for about 10 years so I'm sure it's probably time for some more haha
So glad you like it! And yes, it's ALWAYS time for more pastels!!! LOL! You may have a brand similar to Rembrandt or NuPastel (a little harder than most).
I just started an 8 week class in oil pastels this week, so this was helpful. I'm going to be honest, I was a bit disappointed that you didn't do much blending to make it look like the picture you showed at the beginning. But as a content creator to myself, I understand the desire to keep the videos to a reasonable length. In our first class, we were taught to blend using an old oag and I really like that method.

Hi, @Centannicocktails. Here is a list in my Amazon Shop of some pastel painting products I recommend for beginner pastel artists. I most always use a colored surface or do an underpainting. Great tutorial but 1 thing I learned when painting - if your apple is lopsided, find a more perfect apple or people will think you can’t draw and it will lessen the value of your painting You can clearly draw and are an established artist but for those starting out, start with a good, proportionate subject
Thanks so much Ted! When you over blend you actually crush the crystal elements in the soft pastels and the color becomes dull. I like to let the pastels blend themselves mostly.
Thanks for the tuition. But I am frustrated as I cannot match the colours you mentioned from any of my three pastel collections, so annoying. It happens also with my watercolour paintings. There is no burgundy-red colour and no cream. Huh! And my pastels seem more oily than the ones you used. Are they the more chalky variety?
I would love to join your pattern page but at this time I can only do $5. I’m recently disabled and have not worked in almost a year. Will I be receiving instructions on “ how to “ of pastels? What do people use an apple for beginner painting drawing? It's a very complex shape, light interacts with it in a complex way, and its colouring is complex even before you take light and shadows into account. I would have thought the best thing to start with would be a cube, then a ball, before trying to apply what you've learnt to the complex shapes that fruits have.
Pastels stay on the surface for the most part but especially with papers that have a sanded surface. Some of the masters who painted in pastels still have paintings in great shape today... one of the longest lasting mediums when cared for correctly, great question by the way.
