For anybody who thinks oil pastels look juvenile. I've literally seen fantastic artwork done with Crayola products.

@@LoLFilmStudios yep, baby oil out mineral oil & you can paint with oil pastels

And don't forget that oil pastels were made specifically for Picasso, to meet his requirements/desires.

Quigley said he was using turpentine, actually, @@LoLFilmStudios. Then he stated baby oil is an option.
Do note, though, that, to my knowledge, baby oil is not archival, so it's best avoided for serious artwork intended to be sold or simply to endure over the years.

Oil pastels are so convenient, little setup, versatile , and less mess. Wish I had discovered them before investing so much into materials for other mediums.

I've been on my art journey with oil pastels since 2020 and somehow I didn't come across this video while I was searching for oil pastels tutorial. I also didn't know lots of ppl be looking at oil pastels as immature art tools or what... Then again, I shouldn't be surprised since ppl view coloured pencils like that as well. I guess I've been working with double the juvenile tools all these years. XD
I love doing my arts with both coloured pencils and oil pastels. Everyone should try it out! Thank you for sharing these techniques!

The last example is basically a trace monotype technique. I like drawing this way but I prefer to coat tissue paper with a fine layer of oil pastel(like a carbon copy sheet). The thinner the paper the finer the lines. Aluminum foil, plastic bags and tracing paper have nice effects too. It's tricky to get a nice even coat of pastel onto such thin paper, but with some effort it can be done...so the resulting lines transferred to paper aren't so 'clumpy' looking. Drawn lines can be rubbed or smeared once traced/transferred for tonal or softening effects. If you don't like the clumpy lines look you can either scrape the excess off with an x-acto knife or use masking tape to lift the excess off the paper. I like to use a ball point pen to draw onto the tissue paper which can achieve some surprisingly fine lines onto your paper.

Thank you for making this video, there's not a lot on TH-cam about oil pastels, they're a wonderful medium and should be elevated to beyond naive painting or children's painting, Oil pastels are much more than a crayon. Even a child's wax crayon can produce some wonderful results.

The main problem with them is that they don’t really dry. They sort of go off after a while but they don’t completely dry..*except* where you use solvent ..which dissolves the wax binder and leaves the pigment..and it also dries out.

I've literally had some oil pastels arrive today (in the August 2022 ScrawlrBox, which I subscribe to). I've never used them before, so I thought I'd see what I could find online as pointers and this video of yours came up Tom. I've subscribed and also really enjoyed watching what you did here. I loved the tip on using turps as a thinner and I'm going to give it a go with probably jojoba oil to see how it goes with that (I know it's not turps, but it's also a lot less stinky 😂). I'm actually really looking forward to seeing how I can manipulate the pastels now too! It was also really nice to see another left-handed artist. I do think there seems to be more left-handed artists making art and sharing tips on here and I think that all the other artists I follow are, at least to what I can remember, anyway! Thank you for the tips you've shown here, you've helped to fire my imagination.

I just got a „Beginner’s Set“ with several different kinds of colours for Christmas. There are pastell chalks, oil chalks, acryl colours, different pencils etc.
I can’t draw or paint at all (yet)… as in, I know what I want to paint/draw, but when it comes to actually putting it on paper, I’m lost. BUT I hope it just takes practice. 🙂
I’m especially interested in Oil chalks, because you can stop painting whenever, make corrections etc.

I really loved your video, thanks for doing this. I used to do oil pastels when I did A level, and I showed it to my daughter this morning who is using oil pastels for her art homework. She gasped when she saw the scraffito so you definitely made an impression! I’m going to buy some baby oil and find some white spirit in the garage so she can try some blending techniques. I heard you can also use a tortillon and a silicon pottery tool; I think I have some of those kicking about somewhere. Anyway, thanks for the video, it was really quick and to the point, which is good for kids short attention spans!
