Thank you Lauren i'm 80 years old granny and i love coloring, i have a lots of books and i use soft colour pencils and soft pastels, i don't mind using my fingers but i will try with a scrap of paper. Thank you for explaining so good. This hobby saved my life
I do enjoy watching others explain soft pastels. I like it a bit more when you create an actual picture or painting with the pastels as you explain how to use the different hardness and where and how the pastels are used to create a painting. I use paper towels for cleaning my sticks before or after I start working on a picture. I like to use watercolor paper with clear gesso with a bit of pumice mixed in for grit and more surface area and more layers too! I have used the same mixture on hard boards(Masonite panels) when working larger it is more stabilized and I lose less color “dusting off” of my painting. You presented a wonderful video and sharing your process very well, thanks!
Thanks. I prefer making that type of video and have a lot lined up where I will build upon what I showed here. I just get asked a ton of questions about pastels and this video was to have a spot they could go to get their questions answered. 😊 That is awesome that you do your own! I have some pumice grounds ordered because I really want to try making my own sanded boards.
I have a used art store near me and I totally scored with a vintage box full of over 50+ high end soft pastels for $35. Never used this medium but I’m excited to try!

As a portrait artist I am experimenting with adding pan pastels to my work for Avery skin smooth finish with the soft tools. So if u demo that blending on smoother pastel,paper would be helpful…

Thanks so much for a very clear explanation of soft pastels. My biggest concern is the amount of dust that is created. Is it best to use an easel with a floor covering underneath? Or do you just tip away the dust when it starts to build up too much. Do you every wear gloves - like surgical gloves to protect your hands but also for blending?
When I get dust build up on my picture I dump it into a garbage can. I have seen artists attach gutters or similar things under the piece their working on when using a easel to collect the dust and keep their space clean. Working on sanded paper helps reduce dust. An air purifier is also a great help. I use surgical cloves about 75% of the time when I am using pastels. I don’t much blending with them.
Lol i just got some decent watercolors and watercolor paper, as well as oil pastels. But youtube is now trying to convince me i need soft pastels too, and its working... Is it weird i want to try almost any medium? 😆
@@Dahlily not weird at all! It’s so fun to experiment and explore. What we learn from them might surprise us. I found I like change my medium based on the project I am doing and what I want the end result to look like. I just started back with oil pastels this summer as I was prepping for one of my classes I teach and remembered how fun they are.
@@LaurenWatkinsArtthey are super fun! I'm just a little intimidated by them, and found that spreading them out evenly on the paper takes a lot of elbow grease. But i like the not so tedious and messy set up compared to my watercolors. I have yet to try a bigger oil pastel painting but it might be fun because of the detail I'll be able to achieve!

I have been shown to use a cosmetic sponge or the tools to blend the soft pastels....In this video, you only used a small piece of paper. Do you not blend with either of those I mentioned when using your pastels? The piece of paper to me, didn't blend as well. And again, depending on what type of paper you were using in this video to demonstrate. It's nice to see demos from others as yourself as well.
Yes, I often use sponges to blend. Depending on how I want the blend to look I will change what I blend with (paper, a sponge, silicone tool, black pipe insulation foam, etc.). I shared this technique for someone just starting out. So often we can feel pressured to buy a lot of supplies in order to create art so this was a way to give some basic ideas of how to get started. I did an entire video on 8 different ways to blend soft pastels if your interested in that. 😊
I have never tried. My guess is that acrylic paint might be to smooth of a surface for the pastels to adhere too unless the surface your painting on is extremely texted.
the mungyo 64 had been changed to made in china 。 grass green is missing and each piece are brittle and fragile to break under pressure。 i m using FC 72 color set which is still made in Korean and good quailty。
That such a bummer. I have noticed that’s become a big problem with reviews and recommendations. Companies put out one product and then change manufacturers and/or the formula later. So the product I review is not the product my followers get. 😏

Can these soft pastels be combined whit acrylic paint?
I have never tried. My guess is that acrylic paint might be to smooth of a surface for the pastels to adhere too unless the surface your painting on is extremely texted.
If you want to use pastels to embellish an acrylic painting you could use clear gesso to put some tooth on the paint.
Can I throw my pastel rag in the washer and dryer? Or is that bad for my washer?
I think so. I wash mine. I only wash my art rags together. I don’t mix them with kitchen rags or anything else.

You can erase Panpastel mistakes with an eraser.

Yes, I found out after recording the voice over that my kids had played with the mic and changed the settings. that’s why it’s so echoey.
