I was always in awe over my grandpas pastel paintings. He managed to capture the beauty and realism in nature so easily. When he passed away, I wished to continue his work so here I am :) I have done a few pieces with them but nothing compared to what he has done. My hopes are to be a great as him one day and put his supplies into use again.
I hope you'll be able to come back on this video and see how much you've improved!!!!! I got a lot of pastels from an estate sale, and they seem to be a mixture of both dry pastels and oil pastels :,)
How wonderful to be somebody who inspires the next generation. How blessed to inherit the love for art, the eye for beauty. I hope the art connection will continue throughout generations.
I totally agree that Dry pastel blends better than oil! Oil pastels act a lot like crayons and dry is like charcoal, so much so when I was little I thought they were colored charcoals lol
I'm aware that this is 3 years ago but ,, i highly recommend gallery **soft oil pastels** by mungyo , they're a professional quality oil pastels that are quite creamy and smooth and extremely easy to blend !
By wary though ,, mungyo have two grades of oil pastel sets ,, make sure you pick the one labelled ((gallery)) because there is another set of oil pastels by the same brand that are of a rather primitive quality and do NOT blend at all
@@junaidkhan-uh3hwit's just what I needed - to see the cause and effect of basics before I try and get frustrated lol. I'm trying it as a fun hobby not a new stressor so I want some tips 😂
Funny thing is, I bought oil pastels a couple days ago, only to get home and realize they were soft pastels. This video has been a big help, as have all your others. I hope you'll find time to post some more, your content is top notch.
My grandkids love doing firework and space pictures on black card with soft pastels,I had a small sample pack in a mixed media art kit and didn't know what to do with them..now I've started using them myself ,have nearly used them up,for a tiny sample pack (the pastels were only about an inch and a half long)they sure stretched a long way ,with three grandkids using them constantly! So I'm going to buy some new ones , thanks for this video, very helpful
Thank you so so much!!! I thought I made a mistake purchasing dry pastels, I looked it up on YT prior to doing a return. After watching this I’m so encouraged and glad!!! I’ve used it and I agree with all that you said as a review!
Thank You!, That helped me a lot. I got them 3 years earlier but never knew how to use them! I loved your way of explaining. Also your art with dry pastels was wonderful. It would help a ton if you could make some more videos for art with dry pastels.
Spraying fixative over white soft pastels could turn the white transluscent, especially white dry pastel on black, be weary! Thin coats and keep the spray at a descent distance. Did a graphite sketch with white highlights and the highlights almost dissapeared.
I've heard it's called a 'pastel painting' when you color in the background. If not, it's a drawing. Also, did you know that cheap hair spray will do the same job as fixative? I use it all the time!
Thanks for taking the time to make the video. This is part of my exhaustive search to find a medium that I can experiment with and enjoy long enough to get good at it. I'm starting my journey tonite. Thanks!!
this video made me more open minded about pastels. im actually glad that you mentioned that the pastel doesnt dry or stay on it's own, i started to wonder about that when i was going to start using my pastels
I just have the NuPastels from Prismacolor but I really am loving what I can make from them. For really soft backgrounds, I've been enjoying scraping some color from the stick with an exacto knife onto the page, and so the color won't get too much on my fingers I use a paper towel folded to a point to blend the colors. Still working on how to layer colors since I'm a newbie to pastels though. Love how your owl painting turned out.
Tissue paper. It’s AMAZING when doing art like this. It protects your fingers from getting messy from the chalk. The only down side is that if rubbing too hard the tissue will rip
I love dry pastels, and getting my fingers dirty. I found that having alcohol wipes work best to clean the fingers. and I like to apply alcohol to the base to blend. Weird, but it works if you have a good layer on. It almost looks more like a painting.
I have been doing pastels for quite some time now. Didn't know the difference between soft and hard pastel. Your video taught me a lot. Will visit you often
Imagine my excitement when I saw that you had the exact same prismacolor pastels that I did. The only thing is I have no idea how expensive these are. Somebody gave them to me , and I have a 24 count. I've never used them cuz I really thought they were just some generic case of pastels but apparently not
This video was so helpful. Never thought to use kneeded erasers. Never thought to aply black with my finger. Never thought to use a blender either. Thanks for the vid!
With fixative I was interested myself in trying to do it without a propellant-containing spraycan (I wanted to avoid the harmful gasses because of enviromental impact) I found you can buy liquid fixative, and a normal spray can/one with a pump to spray the painting, and the results have been good up till now :)
This video is great! My boyfriend wanted to buy me an expensive set of colours but he made a mistake and bought me pastels instead. I haven't used them since primary school so I wasn't sure what to do with them. Thank you so much for explaining basic things and giving tips! Can't wait to start experimenting 💜
I found an unopened box of 48 pastels that was an Xmas present from about 10 years ago. No pastel paper so made a grunge background on sketching paper using acrylic paints and began drawing on the paper that had still some damp paint ridges. Now I have khaki patina on my fingertips that has set like military grade concrete, the sketch looks fine though.
Thank you! A friend gave me a box of dry pastels and they've been sitting in that box for over a year. I'm more drawn to three dimensional works and 2 dimensional artwork is not my strong point. Sometimes I just want to play with color though to just relax...and now , thanks to your video, I feel I can handle those pastels easier. And I need a fixative spray. Thanks for that tip. Enjoyable video and cute cat!😊
Thank you that was a super helpful introductory video. I need to learn how to draw at a basic level for a embroidery course. I was really drawn to the pastels in the shop so that's where we are starting.
I bought hard pastes by mistake but don't want them to go to waste. I had no idea how to use them. I made a drawing to get a feel for them and they are so messy. I made the mistake of picking up my drawing and all of the pigment fell everywhere.... So glad you made this video. I had no idea about the fix-it spray. Buying on Amazon now!
you are wonderful. i have to try dry pastels, i received a minimal set (just a few expressionist colours :)) ) and i can't let them turn to dust. :) your video is useful for me, it seems easy, although i have tried only paints so far. enjoyed watching you.
Love this video. Easiest to see and understand how to get started and get a result. Please do you have more soft pastel videos and how to find them. Thank you
thanks for the lesson. Super important is making sure people wear some kind of mask when spraying the fixative. My friend Shelia Wolk who is a famous pastel painter actually went blind and deaf from spraying large pieces inside. It's true. It all came back but OMG. You would love her work. She has videos on here. Anyway. I am with you, I love the soft pastels too. I did a bunch of them on layout paper and the skin looked real! You can check my art on my channel if you like. Anyway, you are a lot of fun. Great tips! Oh, also, doing the pastels with prismacolor pencils come out nice too.
Thank you so much for this video, I receive soft pastels for my birthday last year and I never get the chance to use them because I didn't know how, thanks to you I know now😅
Hey! Nice tutorial I’m really good with dry pastels (at least that’s what people think) and I think this was very relatable and I agree with this video a lot.
Hi. This is very informative video you’ve made. Just wondering if the fixative spray is the same as for graphites. Or is it another different fixative that’s only meant for dry pastel?
Do blended stumps execute better blending than our fingers? If yes, please tell me the name of the manufacturer of the blended stumps you use. Sincerely yours, Imperial
It works but it will turn your work yellow with age. Do NOT use it for work you are planning to sell because the piece will begin to get really gross and yellow as it ages.
Once in class our teacher told us to experiment with dry pastels and at first I didn’t like them because they were so chalky and just made tons of dust. Everyone would just nudge their paper a little and it’d smear because of that dust. I took found out how to avoid that by holding my paper so the dust would go to the middle and would go to the trash can and quickly flip it over. It worked great and I was able to do better on the picture without smearing the dust.
I just bought my basic set of 12 soft pastels on a whim because it happened to be available in my dad's go-to craft store and my dad decided to buy me anything I wanted. I have absolutely no idea how to use it. Now I regret not also buying the fixative right next to it. 😬

Well at least you thought it was not chalk like i did… my mom was mad when she found out that i had her pastels 😛
This is so helpful, i've had pastels for ages and not known how to use them. thanks!
Glad I could help :)
Same here. Didn't know I was sort of doing it wrong. Definitely need the fixent spray. Of course no store to go to. Probably order it.

Spraying fixative over white soft pastels could turn the white transluscent, especially white dry pastel on black, be weary! Thin coats and keep the spray at a descent distance. Did a graphite sketch with white highlights and the highlights almost dissapeared.
Sennelier fixatif doesn't harm the painting. It's a better than Grumbacher
Is that why when I use my fixative it makes them loom darker? I also use black paper so that might be part of it?
I've heard it's called a 'pastel painting' when you color in the background. If not, it's a drawing. Also, did you know that cheap hair spray will do the same job as fixative? I use it all the time!
Rachel M but hairspray might damage your drawing overtime, it’ll make it yellowish
Uh huh, listen Hong Kong, Agust D sent me here Ok, thanks. Rethink!
Lol no hairspray is acidic. Not really a problem if you do work for fun but selling a quality time bomb is terrible.

Nice tutorial for dry pastels...
Oil pastel has a smooth transition or.. Streak ability? And dry pastel has more of a better blending ability (depends of what hand pressure you use)
