  • It’s hard for us to imagine now, but during a certain era, people thought of Wallis Simpson as the woman who nearly brought down the British monarchy singlehandedly. Had Edward VIII not fallen for this scandalous American divorcée, the world would surely be a different place. So how did Simpson come to change the course of history? Let’s find out.

    Over 60 years ago I stepped into an elevator at the New York Plaza Hotel. In the elevator was Edward and Wallis. They were quietly bickering. Even as a teenager I knew who they were. I thought, “Remember this moment”. I did.

    Wallis didnt bring down the monachy, Edward did. She didnt have that power. He did. He lived a life of excesses. She was just a social climber and unhappy in her marriage and looking for an outlet and validation and recognition. Got it from Edward, then could not extract herself from him. She settled, but didnt love Edward. She settled for fame and security and in the drivng seat, three things she didnt have.

    Suzanne Blum, the attorney forged documents to give herself power of attorney over Wallis. She even took her Out dogs away from her. Wallis died in poverty. But when Edward was still alive, he would call out to Wallis and she wouldn't come to him. It was nurses who hugged and comforted him. I think it would have been a disaster if Edward was King during WW2.

      Absolutely agree. Everyone hated her, but she was a blessing in disguise. Reportedly, it was difficult to distinguish the evil of Hitler at the beginning of things, when his economic policies were really helping Germany to recover from the financial disaster of WWI, but how blind do you have to be? Edward was naive and stupid, easily led, and she was a social climber, always looking for an opportunity. The fact that the Parliament and Anglican Church objected, and his subsequent abdication was a bullet dodged.

    Various mistakes, and lots of crucial bits left out - such as why the Royals refused to allow Wallis and Edward live in the UK. The government had discovered that he had been actively undermining Britain and supporting Germany in World War II, with Germany plotting to put Edward on the throne again when they invaded. Churchill had the file kept secret for seventy years. When Elizabeth II found it she told Edward in no uncertain terms that he and his wife would never be allowed live in Britain, as they were traitors, Legally they could have been executed as traitors. The file is now public and is damaging of that monstrous couple. They were two horrid, selfish people.

      While he was Govenor of the Bahamas, he kept regular company with a Nazi spy that was hanging around there, who he would pass information to. • @jimduffy7199

      1. If he did he would immediately be out of communion with the Church of England, a mandatory requirement - as they could not recognise or celebrate the marriage. He would therefore be ineligible to be king the moment he married her.
      2. Her first divorce was invalid in British law, as was her second marriage, as it was on invalid legal grounds in the UK. If he tried to marry her, she would be prosecuted for bigamy as in British law she was still married to her first husband. (England law only allowed divorce on the grounds of adultery. She got her first divorce on grounds of mutual incompatibility, an invalid ground in English law at the time.)
      3. His governments across the commonwealth would resign, provoking a commonwealth-wide constitutional crisis which it was feared would lead to the abolition of the monarchy.
      4. The British public would never accept that woman, with two living husbands, as queen. The monarchy only exists based on acceptance. Marrying her would be suicidal for the support of the monarchy.
      Marrying her was never an option once the governments, who had to approve it, said unambiguously 'no'.

  • @gnomely1
    @gnomely1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +136

    She didn't almost bring down the monarchy. It was of less consequence than had the King actually died instead. All that happened was that the King abdicated and his brother became George VI. The Earth didn't move and it passed over quite quickly. Edward was, in reality, not popular and was known to be a Nazi sympathizer. She and Edward spent the rest of their lives in exile, an object of mild curiosity as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The Queen Mother hated her because she hadn't wanted her husband to become King with all that it entailed. However, she and her two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret were ushered reluctantly into the limelight. one positive to emerge was that without Edward abdicating we wouldn't have had Queen Elizabeth II. So some good came of it.

    • @Roses-lilac

      @starrbowie8649 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      This documentary does mention some conflicting theories and "facts" about the situation but not all, which is a pity. One story has it that the cause of the pressure on Edward VIII to abdicate had not only to do with his Nazi sympathies, but with a traitorous act of warning the Nazis about British military movements at one point, thus contributing to British casualties. His reign was potentially a security risk, not just a bad look because of orevailing social norms. A second story was that Wallis was in love with Simpson, and felt pressure to marry Edward because things had gone too far to pull out and there were fears that Edward would commit suicide if she didn't stay with him. A third interpretation, mentioned by Lady Colin-Campbell, is that she didn't despise him but in fact used her considerable social and organizing skills to maintain a home in which most of the regal treatment to which he had been accustomed was meticulously observed.

      @@Roses-lilacthere is no evidence that Meghan was “after” William - no woman was, except Catherine. All Catherine needed to do was exercise patience and wait.
      That is not a Wallis/Edward situation., and it is not a Henry Tudor situation.
      Wallis/Edward was instructive to show how succession is always assured. William and his three children show the same thing.
      Harry/Meghan do not factor in, neither did Andrew/Sarah or Margaret/Antony Armstrong-Jones.

      Actually, because of the abdication George VI and even QE2 constantly worried that the monarchy would be overthrown in favour of a republic. Especially when war broke out against Germany because they were Germanic themselves. They changed their name to Windsor to look more British. Any change of monarch is so quick to try and keep it smooth and prevent the general population from getting ideas. And George was taking on a role that he had never expected to have to take and wasn’t trained for. He had a bad stammer which added to his problems. The stress of taking on the role his brother dumped on him led to an early death. Not surprising that the royal family never forgave Edward for abdicating as they lived with the consequences for the rest of their lives.

      Monarchs are always fearful of revolutions and being deposed. In Britain this has always been the case, especially when their continental cousins were falling like leaves since the 18th century.
      As to changing their name, it was the Norman's who introduced surnames, before that a titled man could have 7 sons who would all ended up with different surnames depending on the estate they had gained. It's common to claim that the Royal family are German, however royal families marry into other royal families and it's just as easy to claim that the German royal families were English and that's why King George I inherited the throne in the first place. Too late, she realized that she had worked herself into a situation she could not get out of -- at first it was probably exciting to both her and Ernest to climb into Edward's social set, but soon Ernest probably realized that he had been supplanted. I don't think Wallis thought Edward would be so clingy-- she thought he would dump her just like he did all the other married women he had sex with; but that didn't happen. To her Edward was a social climbing ultimate goal. Bed him and then leave him or wait for Edward to dump HER. Instead he became OBSESSED with her and simply could not function without her. Her letter to Ernest just prior to finalizing her divorce from him is really sad - she asks him to pray for her on her divorce signing day, and that she is SO LONELY! Well, she got what she wanted and once she had Edward she realized she was trapped FOREVER with Peter Pan as she called him -- the boy who never grew up. Meanwhile the capable brother became the new king; even with a stutter, he was still made of MUCH sterner stuff and inner strength than Edward, so actually Wallis saved the British people from being let by the immature Edward through WW2. He would probably have given in to Hitler or at least tried to, while Churchill would have been totally aghast.

      I agree, Edward was a weak man and would have been a pathetic King. George VI was a fine King and 10 times the man Edward was. In the end I think Edward and Wallace were sad figures, friendless and isolated. Sad end really. As for Britains role in WW2 being different if Edward was on the throne? Nonsense. Clearly some people do not understand the role of the Royal family. The democratically elected UK government make all decisions regarding the state not the royal family, who have only a ceremonial role in government. It’s why the UK democracy is rated so highly in democracy world rankings.

      It has to do with the Church of England. The monarch is the head of the church. In the 1930s divorce and remarriage was forbidden. Edward could not marry a woman with 2 living husbands and be head of the church. It wasn’t until a couple decades ago that the church changed their view on divorce. That is why Charles can be married to Camilla now. Even when Anne remarried she couldn’t do it in England. She and Tim married in Scotland instead.

Most of us don't see what Edward saw in her. However from what I have read she was very sociable and charming. Edward also liked the fact that she was American -- he liked things American including the fashionable clothes he wore. She would talk back to him in a free American type of way without that British awe, and he also found that very refreshing. For him she was unique and lovable. OTOH, Wallis enjoyed hobnobbing with the rich royals until she realized that Edward was obsessed with her and would NEVER let her go (he even threatened to kill himself if she left him); so she was basically trapped unless she would have chosen to just leave him. But the risk of him doing himself harm was too great so she stayed with him, and that was that.
