I don’t think Wallis actually wanted to marry Edward. She liked the cache of being the kings mistress- but I think he backed her into a corner she couldn’t get out of. They deserved one another; in the end I’m not convinced they were at all happy with one another- just stuck- which they also deserved after what they put their families and the country through. The only good thing to come out of it was the abdication; Edward had no business being king. His own father predicted his downfall before he died.

Trapped!?.. He stalked her he arranged all those social gatherings so that they included himself. Wallace and her husband came to England to frolic with the influential and the Royals for a lark. I have watched so many documentaries of David and every image of him as a young man is a glassy-eyed stare through you. The feeling that he was always looking beyond you, wanting to bolt for freedom. Bertie always looks "present and alert" like he is focusing on you. Then as David abdicates and in his older life he always looked pained and has the look about him like an abused dog waiting for the next beating. He has never looked happy - ever - even when get got what he wanted. This is the sad thing about his story. He was never really happy.

Not sure the "Unholy Trinity" of Palace, Parliament, and Church were wrong. King George VI was simply an excellent monarch with a finely honed sense of responsibility. King Edward VIII? Not so much. Maybe he'd have turned out differently, but I doubt it.
He was already old enough to not be likely to change drastically. And Wallis Simpson also wasn’t a lamb born yesterday, as they say, everyone behind the scenes knew that Edward wasn’t keen on his royal duties, he and his mistress liked the privileges a lot more. And that wasn’t gonna change overtime.
He was ousted really. They wouldn’t budge an inch to give him what he wanted. If he’d stayed he would have been put firmly in his box. Princes can get away with a lot as Edward did, but Kings have to tow the line or pay the price. Edward knew this. Poor Wallis was like a rat in a trap.

Edward was thoroughly unsuited to be King. After his Succession he thought he could carry on his previous life of drinking and partying. He was a security risk, leaving state papers on his desk and his staff were right to be concerned about passing secret state papers on to him. His brother wasn’t born to be King but King George VI proved to be far more suited to the role than Edward. Edward was given an official role attached to the military during WW2 and during the evacuation from France he deserted his post and fled to Spain with Wallis. He had continued to have Nazi associations and was a huge security risk. Even when they were sent to the Bahamas where Edward became Governor General he was caught up in various scandals and including some very questionable financial dealings. It was hardly surprising that after the war he wasn’t trusted with any official role. They were not married by a “Royal Chaplain” but rather an ordinary Church of England Vicar who defied the church to perform the ceremony in France.

According to her letters to Edward she was happy. Although they both would have been much more happy if they had been allowed to live in England and not in exile. A letter dated December 18th 1936 Wallis writes to Edward: “That England could have turned on the Prince of Wales has been a cruel blow to my faith in mankind. However we will find a new strong life built on our lonely love which has stood a test to prove its greatness. The anguish and loneliness of these months will be terrifying but we must take it and use our last remaining strength to endure it. I love you my own dear David. WALLIS” And several years later on February the 7th 1952 she writes to Edward: “My own darling one.. I hate, hate having you go away alone - but you are not really alone because I am so much a part of you… Darling I shall miss you each second and you know that I love you more than anything in the world for always my dearest darling David.” And while she was in New York a couple of weeks writing her memoirs with the help of Charles Murphy she writes to Edward on November 27th 1955: “Never will I be away from you for so long again. Can’t wait for Friday - we sail at 12 noon... I love you more & more.. Your WALLIS”
Depends which letters you are reading. Letters from 1936 are one thing - the letters found much more recently from Wallis to her former husband tell a VERY different story.

Or rather I’ve read the book by Anne Sebba which is based on those letters and they don’t say very much more than that Wallis is scared and sad over how things turned out with the abdication and the treatment they got from the royal family. She writes that her life before was “more easy” but they don’t say anywhere that she regret her marriage to Edward, that she regrets her divorce from Ernest (although she is sorry for Ernest because he was getting some very bad press too and she felt responsible for that) and the letters doesn’t with one word say that she loves Ernest. Feel free to quote from the letters and prove me wrong…

Double standard yes. Times have changed and a lot of things that were considered sacred (being head of the Church of England, for instance) aren't seen in the same light.
At the end of the day the royal family are human. Take away the royal bit and they are like any other family. Some do well some not so well. Some make the family proud some are an embarrassment. Sometimes how they turn out is due to how they were brought up. Even when the parents of the family don’t always get it right they generally do what they think is right. I think most of us can relate to that in some way as to who we are and how we view some of our family members. Being a royal though puts you in public view and therefore judged by all. A privileged upbringing yes but certainly not a private one. It’s easy for us all to judge them back then or the royal family of today. But in the end they only have the same triumphs and embarrassments as the rest of us. Edward did it his way and was a product of his upbringing and genetics. Same as the rest of us. There’s a fine line between getting it right or wrong. But as a royal that fine line is there for the world to see. 90 years later and we’re still judging him and his parents yet none of really have a clue
His being shoved out the door as king had much less to do with Wallis than it had to do with his stupidity and willingness to blab secrets to anyone who would listen, said secrets making their way to enemy nations. He was more German than anything else, quite proud of it, and willing to let Hitler devour Europe. I believe strongly that he was promised restoration to the throne by Hitler because he was willing to toe the Nazi line and obey orders. Even his longtime friend Winston Churchill finally came to realize what a calamity he was. I highly recommend reading Traitor King by Andrew Lownie to learn all about him and Wallis, especially during the war years.
You don't have to "believe it strongly" - there is documentary proof from captured Nazi documents and communications that confirms that Edward had agreed to help the Nazis in exchange for being "restored" to the throne after the invasion of the UK. When that didn't work out, he was then party to a plot to make him king of Hanover when the war was over - something neither the British OR American Government would consider for even a minute, considering what they knew about his activities.

The Duke of Windsor gave an interview late in life where he admitted that he always fought against the establishment. He also said that if he had never married Wallis he would have still fought against the establishment and probably would have abdicated.
I still think he pushed to marry Wallace because that was his way out of being King ... he never wanted to be King just free to do as he wished. In the end it was best he abdicated to his brother.
He was useless and dangerous there too, getting mixed up in all kinds of dodgy schemes, including money laundering. He kept close touch there with many documented Nazi agents.

Abdication. What difference did it make? A king is a show piece, nothing more. BTW, A close friend of Edward’s, who was an intimate observer of him, stated that the relationship between Wallis and Edward was not one of domination but of obsession. Him for her. No one ever discusses mental illness in this case, but the British Royal Family is cursed with it. When the full horror of spending one’s life with an obsessive neurotic like Edward dawned upon Wallis, she wrote that she was trapped. One cannot feel pity for her. Simpson’s business went down the drain during the Depression and Edward was very rich. She traded Spencer for jewels and money. Correction. She was not well educated. She attended a finishing school. Those girls are taught how to properly fold linen napkins, how to make an entrance into a room, and most importantly, how to marry for money. A friend noted the Windsors didn’t have a single book in their house.

The one duty that Edward VIII should have been looking to was securing the succession. He had no business waiting until the age of 43 to marry and produce an heir. When he finally decides to marry, it's a twice divorced woman who had never conceived, and who was more than likely entering pre-menopause. And yet, their childless state, nor the likelihood of securing an heir is never mentioned! Nor is it mentioned in any documentary I've ever seen. But it is a topic so central to the monarchy, it seems an outrageous oversight to leave it undiscussed. Was he sterile and knew of the condition from an earlier illness? Did they know such things back then? Was she sterile? Or just past child-bearing? It would be enlightening to know the answers to these questions to determine his motives at the time, for abdicating.

Stanley Baldwin was not a "snake". He was very astute and knew what a disaster Edward would be as king. One thing to mention is, Edward HATED the duties as PoW and as King. He loved the fun part. Trapped!?.. He stalked her he arranged all those social gatherings so that they included himself. Wallace and her husband came to England to frolic with the influential and the Royals for a lark. She wasn't seriously wanting to be with Edward he trapped her with guilt put her in a home way outside of town to protect her from the Press and then abdicated. She was writing letters to her ex-husband saying how much she loved him and didn't love Edward. As an American watching from the outside I think the monarchy is about dated antiquated hierarchy that only shows that there are some that are so much better than the people that they don't even get invited to the coronation that they're paying for! They pay the king or Queens a million pounds of tax-free money a year and they get complete immunity from any prosecution for absolutely any crime. From the outside looking in I just don't think that the English people understand the obscene entitlement of this example of the history of debauchery and despots. This is just reinforcingt a position of elevated entitlement. When there are programs like this that whitewash the truth avoid the facts and Lie by omission it only continues to delude the people from knowing the truth about a king that committed treason. Wallis Simpson did not love Edward VIII. In fact she was appalled that he abdicated in order to marry her. Wallis resented being obliged to marry Edward after this. Not sure the "Unholy Trinity" of Palace, Parliament, and Church were wrong. King George VI was simply an excellent monarch with a finely honed sense of responsibility. King Edward VIII? Not so much. Maybe he'd have turned out differently, but I doubt it.
He was already old enough to not be likely to change drastically. And Wallis Simpson also wasn’t a lamb born yesterday, as they say, everyone behind the scenes knew that Edward wasn’t keen on his royal duties, he and his mistress liked the privileges a lot more. And that wasn’t gonna change overtime.
Unlikely they would have had children/heirs, so the Crown would have gone to his brother's family anyways.

Edward was thoroughly unsuited to be King. After his Succession he thought he could carry on his previous life of drinking and partying. He was a security risk, leaving state papers on his desk and his staff were right to be concerned about passing secret state papers on to him. His brother wasn’t born to be King but King George VI proved to be far more suited to the role than Edward. Edward was given an official role attached to the military during WW2 and during the evacuation from France he deserted his post and fled to Spain with Wallis. He had continued to have Nazi associations and was a huge security risk. Even when they were sent to the Bahamas where Edward became Governor General he was caught up in various scandals and including some very questionable financial dealings. It was hardly surprising that after the war he wasn’t trusted with any official role.
They were not married by a “Royal Chaplain” but rather an ordinary Church of England Vicar who defied the church to perform the ceremony in France.

According to her letters to Edward she was happy. Although they both would have been much more happy if they had been allowed to live in England and not in exile.

Can’t wait for Friday - we sail at 12 noon... I love you more & more.. Your WALLIS”
Depends which letters you are reading. Letters from 1936 are one thing - the letters found much more recently from Wallis to her former husband tell a VERY different story.

Or rather I’ve read the book by Anne Sebba which is based on those letters and they don’t say very much more than that Wallis is scared and sad over how things turned out with the abdication and the treatment they got from the royal family. She writes that her life before was “more easy” but they don’t say anywhere that she regret her marriage to Edward, that she regrets her divorce from Ernest (although she is sorry for Ernest because he was getting some very bad press too and she felt responsible for that) and the letters doesn’t with one word say that she loves Ernest. Feel free to quote from the letters and prove me wrong…

At the end of the day the royal family are human. Take away the royal bit and they are like any other family. Some do well some not so well. Some make the family proud some are an embarrassment. Sometimes how they turn out is due to how they were brought up. Even when the parents of the family don’t always get it right they generally do what they think is right. I think most of us can relate to that in some way as to who we are and how we view some of our family members. Being a royal though puts you in public view and therefore judged by all. A privileged upbringing yes but certainly not a private one. It’s easy for us all to judge them back then or the royal family of today. But in the end they only have the same triumphs and embarrassments as the rest of us. Edward did it his way and was a product of his upbringing and genetics. Same as the rest of us. There’s a fine line between getting it right or wrong. But as a royal that fine line is there for the world to see. 90 years later and we’re still judging him and his parents yet none of really have a clue

His being shoved out the door as king had much less to do with Wallis than it had to do with his stupidity and willingness to blab secrets to anyone who would listen, said secrets making their way to enemy nations. He was more German than anything else, quite proud of it, and willing to let Hitler devour Europe. I believe strongly that he was promised restoration to the throne by Hitler because he was willing to toe the Nazi line and obey orders. Even his longtime friend Winston Churchill finally came to realize what a calamity he was. I highly recommend reading Traitor King by Andrew Lownie to learn all about him and Wallis, especially during the war years.
You don't have to "believe it strongly" - there is documentary proof from captured Nazi documents and communications that confirms that Edward had agreed to help the Nazis in exchange for being "restored" to the throne after the invasion of the UK. When that didn't work out, he was then party to a plot to make him king of Hanover when the war was over - something neither the British OR American Government would consider for even a minute, considering what they knew about his activities.
He absolutely was looking for Hitler to restore him to the throne if Germany were to conquer England. I'm pretty sure he was assured of this.

The Duke of Windsor gave an interview late in life where he admitted that he always fought against the establishment. He also said that if he had never married Wallis he would have still fought against the establishment and probably would have abdicated.
I still think he pushed to marry Wallace because that was his way out of being King ... he never wanted to be King just free to do as he wished. In the end it was best he abdicated to his brother.
It was scandalous at the time..he fought for his love and for that he still deserves all my respect.

The one duty that Edward VIII should have been looking to was securing the succession. He had no business waiting until the age of 43 to marry and produce an heir. When he finally decides to marry, it's a twice divorced woman who had never conceived, and who was more than likely entering pre-menopause. And yet, their childless state, nor the likelihood of securing an heir is never mentioned! Nor is it mentioned in any documentary I've ever seen. But it is a topic so central to the monarchy, it seems an outrageous oversight to leave it undiscussed. Was he sterile and knew of the condition from an earlier illness? Did they know such things back then? Was she sterile? Or just past child-bearing? It would be enlightening to know the answers to these questions to determine his motives at the time, for abdicating.
