- The “Victorian” Era contained some of the most dazzling and darkest moments of English history, but who was the monarch behind the glorious name? Queen Victoria led a nation for longer than anyone before her-and it was a reign full of personal scandal, tragedy, and heartache.

I recall a story that happened while on one of her forced tours as princess, in the city of Bath. Someone in the crowd made fun of her appearance, and she was so insulted that she never visited the city ever again. Bath spent decades trying to lure her back, which is why there are so many statues to her and several roads named after her: each was an attempt to attract Victoria's attention to come and do the dedication. That woman could seriously hold a grudge.
In almost every way she had an abusive childhood. I recall reading her saying to one of her granddaughters that she detested the Tapestry Room at Windsor as her mother gave her a severe dressing down there over something she was utterly innocent of. Why on earth would she want to be reminded of these childhood miseries?
There’s a story like that about Reading, the legend goes Her Majesty was so upset with the welcome she ordered a statue built with her back to the town. I do feel these are just stories……………….

I know this is unrelated, but some of the music in the background was something that I performed almost 40 years ago when I was back in high school. It’s called English Folk Song Suite by Vaughn Williams. I believe it’s being performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. A beautiful piece to play.
I remember hearing this in the BBC adaptation of the M.R. James Ghost story 'Lost Hearts' and loved it 😀
I’ve watched so many of these videos and can I just say that whoever is narrating this video, is my favorite. I’ve noticed I enjoy listening to the videos this person narrates more than any of the other videos. He speaks very clearly and annunciates words beautifully.
The narrator is so easy to listen to! Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Love your video work too!!
Very well done!!
Thanks!
@@Factinateexceptional annunciation 🏴 from a fellow Scot 😊
He is fun lol
Great narration! Slow and precise. Thanks for the video.
One of the best narration I have heard in a long time.
This was great, especially the of what she took to her grave. She loved them both💘
Albert didn't propose because you can't propose to the Queen 😅 not because Queen Victoria was so modern.
Exactly, the monarch is above all others. You proposing to her is like you asking her to become equal. She has to propose.
Anyone that knows anything about royalty knows that the crown monarch proposes to the intended 🙄
But Albert bought the Balmoral estate, the private home of all succeeding monarchs, because married women at the time couldn't own property.
@@Nastyswimmer
Of course they could!
It wasn't all too common, but there were neither laws, nor traditions prohibiting any female property!

The narration is wonderful: not only is there the treat to the ear of Real cadence of speech, but also there are the humorous, flippant asides tossed at various points. Thank you!
Agreed, and those asides I too thought very well-placed and paced. lol
Not to mention the accent, surely. Makes the cadence even more enjoyable to me.

Nicely done. Perfect pace, and element of lightness in the telling. Thank you.
Thoroughly enjoyed the narrative and also the pictures and portraits. Loved how you kept the best till last. Good old John Brown 😮
I saw the movie "Mrs. Brown." It's well worth the time.
Absolutely LOVED the narrator in this video. MORE please!!
Victoria's choice of white dress was not the only wedding influence from her family ... the now traditional wedding "marches" - Wagner's 'Bridal March' and Mendelssohn's 'Wedding March' were first used in Queen Vic's daughter's wedding.
Not so popular anymore, though.
Brilliantly written, narrated, and edited!!! And your use of clips from my favorite comedy series ever, Black Adder, explains your well-timed dry wit in all your videos. Well done presentation on ol' Vickie, as are all your videos!
"She did the Christian thing and took revenge" lol
Yes, very Christian. An eye for an eye.🤣
That is very Christian of her royal highness.

Very good show, thanks! I love that Queen Victoria paid homage not only to Prince Albert but also to John Brown when she was buried. Good heavens, why shouldn't she have had a relationship with him so long after her husband died? Even though she didn't want to make that public, I say good for her!
Informative and entertaining. Thank you.
Beautifully done! Brilliant, and thank you!
she had some skills in drawing... imagine an alternate universe where she didn't become a queen, but a painter...
...and then she'd get rejected and start a war...
@@Domee894 OH COME ON, NOT AGAIN!! 😭😭😭
As well as doting on her Scotish servant, Brown, thereby being called "Mrs. Brown", she was devoted to her first prime-minster, the married and sophisticated Lord Melbourne, who was a father figure to the teen-aged Queen. Wags at court called her "Mrs Melbourne" behind the royal back. Later in life she also relied on an Indian servant called "The Munshi" which greatly annoyed her family and other English courtiers and servants.
Not to mention, she upset her family and courtiers for actually embracing some of the culture of India (since she felt PROUD to be Empress of India) via trying to learn to write Hindustani with Abdul's help and even adding spicy East Indian dishes to the Windsor Castle menu! Virtually as soon as she breathed her last, not only did they instantly expell the Munshi as well as his wife and mother-in-law back to India but they celebrated getting rid of the East Indian dishes!
I love the part of her taking the same path to draw-out the assailant, with her finest henchmen ready to pounce.
Well, I wouldn't know anything bad about having a confidant as a widow.
This makes Queen Victoria VERY much more likeable to me, as it shows that she is not only a down-to-earth woman (she was a brilliant business woman) but also a person who liked good company and knew that every moment in life should be cherished (this is called "living in the present moment" in modern language) ...
I like how people praise powerful women yet blame everything that is wrong on the men of that era.
How can women be so powerful and still manage their victimhood? How can she e so powerful yet a innocent bystander of everything that was going on in the slums and colonies?
She moped about after her cousin/husband died.

I have the attention span of a fruit fly, but I watched this entire video without interruption. Well done!
Although I have Enjoyed pretty much Every Factinate video that Ive seen So Far, which is more than 2 dozen, the narrator of this video is My Absolute Favorite! He just gives the Historic videos a more, Well, Historic feel- And, Not Only does he sound More Mature then some of the other narrators, he tends to also pronounce words correctly, which is something that the other younger sounding narrators can’t seem to do- Anyways, Even though the video was posted 6 months ago, I do Hope that those that created it sees my comment- That way, they might consider having the guy that narrated this video, narrate more of them- And lastly, the comment that he made at the end of the video (Vicki, you Naughty Girl) Literally made me LOL and was a Wonderful Reminder of why I Love British History So Much! So, Well Done Factinate!
Fascinating, formidable and fearless woman. My favorite among British queens
Fearless? Did she fight in any wars?

The most wonderful accent is a Scottish accent. I could sit and listen to this accent forever.
My paternal grandfather was Scottish. I can still hear his brogue and MISS IT TO THIS DAY.
@@janiceholtzclaw6350 fun fact, the scottish accent is very similar to the flemish, which is due to the history of urban scotland being largely founded by flemish immigrants (most of whom came with william the conqueror to great britain)
Exceptional annunciation from a fellow Scot 🏴 Have listened to other factinate videos, however, due to robotic sounding Americans turned off !!
The frog comment made me laugh. I got in trouble when our daughter was born, because I said after the fact that she looked like an alien clone when she first popped out. My daughter has since been both offended and amused by the remark.

And yet, she never said it....

Thank you., Care has been taken to make this accurate, balanced, and broad in content....as well as clever and amusing.
The photos highlight the text quite well. Lots of info. here, interestingly delivered.
She sure had the cutest wee crown!
She requested it be made because Victoria suffered migraine headaches and the tiny crown was regal while being light weight.
Perfect narration. One must wonder how long she would've ruled if modern medicine had been available. Long live the Queen. I am a mere 145th from the throne myself!
Only 145, then...?
That was such good work Mr Narrator I should subscribe! But...Is there second breakfast?
The narrator is hilarious at times.😂

I just love your comments. I laugh every time
Hi, the narration is pretty good, but the sudden increases in volume of the music really kinda mess with the flow and are a bit jarring. Otherwise, I'd say keep up the good work!
Didn't we all have sad childhoods.
My childhood was so wonderful, it’s been difficult adjusting to adulthood. I was so blessed and lucky. I hope you had some goodness as a kiddo.🌺
We had to cut our pencils and coloured pencils in half very often, as we needed to share them with our siblings. I very often didn't have a pen to take to school but at home I did my homework using a fountain pen nib tied to a stick. I dipped it in the ink.
I knew mum was always short of money, so I didn't want to upset her by asking for money for a pen. That was normal life for us and for our parents.

Damn Albert "what's your secret bro?"
Given the mortality rates of the day, dying in ones early to mid 30s wouldn't have been unusual. Living past 80 would have been pretty extraordinary.
Easy life, no manual labour and she had good healthcare.
@andrewoliver8930 I would've thought that, in those days, sometimes a lack of healthcare would've led to a longer life. I guess the saying that "your mileage may vary applied". Sometimes healthcare was life-saving and sometimes life-threatening.
Wonderful history excerpt. ❤❤❤
Great narrative! I have subscribed! Thank you!
Thanks and welcome!!!
Thanks for the video
The heaviest trial I have ever to endure. Albert was not supportive husband now a nurse ,lack of self control.
I have heard of that, Queen Victoria blamed the London Metropolitan Policemen for not being able to catch & arrest Jack the Ripper.
Queen Victoria lived A ROYAL life. And people are complaining about princesses who came after her.
Whatever that means. Covering up her real life well?
The one thing that bothered me about Queen Victoria was that she hated babies. Why have kids if you don't want any. She tormented her children with all her gaslighting.
A lot of women say they wish they could have been a grandmother and skipped the mother part. They feel worn down by all the demands of their kids.
She had babies because it was her royal duty to produce an heir. She had so many because she and her husband had a lot of sex.
That plot twist at the end....❤
That man basically survived on his hate of the Duchess of Kent.
Also I think Lord Melbourne really cared for Victoria like a daughter.
"Vicky...you naughty gurl!"
Victoria’s mothering skills were far worst than her mother’s.
Yes, they were either used or abused by her. Such unhappy childhoods. No wonder ‘Bertie’ kicked up his heels when he grew up. 🤣
She was awful, I thank Dear God for the love momma showered on us, with no stipulations, just pure love.. momma..❤❤❤
I suspect she didn’t enjoy being pregnant all the time. I imagine it prevented her from having much fun. Some time alone to just be with her beloved would have probably been more fun for her. Probably resented being in a delicate condition for the better part of a decade, and blamed her children. Just guessing though.
How so? Her mother locked her up away from anyone, I think your dead wrong.
I think they were both awful.
I enjoyed that
Thanks ❤
It always amazed me that Albert didn’t utilize condoms, since Victoria hated being pregnant. They were widely available to wealthy men.
ohhh
In the moment you throw caution to the wind.
He couldn't control himself with his first cousin. The dirty old dog.
what is the classical tune playing around 9:30 to 10:30? Ive been looking for the title for 40 years. The only thing i remember from the sheet music was “Chanson No. ?”
Points for the Blackadder clip!
Yessss❤
It's interesting that movies show the controlling part of Victoria's mother. I find it refreshing to know how much Victoria's mother loved her. John Conroy really did control Victoria's mother.
Truthfully Victoria did the very same mistake her mother did, she allowed Albert the control over her role as Queen. He kept her pregnant for literally years. Victoria sure loved sex with Al that's for sure.
Couldn't he withdraw a little earlier
He didn’t control her, she gave him control of some things but definitely not others.
@@Roz-y2d thank you for the clarification. I read some things but not every source is accurate. thanks
@@anushaiyer2487 well now that's a method that's been tried... I'm not sure if it's effective consistently.... but she was pregnant about 12 times I'm thinking it would have given her a break... she had enough kids to populate the royal houses of Europe and beyond. Or infect them depending on how you read it.
Victoria loved sex to point of addiction...I've read he was not always a happy consenting participant. She kept herself pregnant
Isn’t hemophilia more prevalent in families that are created thru incest?
Yes. It is true. Genetic issues are the main reason why it is prohibited to marry too close of a relation. Check out the Hapsburgs, which is the poster family for royal inbreeding.
Ancient man knew this (except the royal Egyptians, who went against the rules for some reason) and they began the first rules prohibiting incestuous marriages.
They are closely related to each other, I don't think it's incest but it's close enough. Cousins to cousins... first and second... they shouldn't have ever gone lower than third cousins.

Interesting video, but the background music is a little too loud and covers up your voice.
The best so far
The lesson should be to raise your child properly, regardless of their future status.
I've always been interested in Queen Victoria because I was named after her. Well, my great great grandmother, who was born in 1900, was named after the Queen, and I was named after her.
That was great!
When I look at all the poverty and suffering during the Victorian era, QUEEN Victoria is the real victim....
Victoria was in constant danger of being murdered. Her free- for-all adulthood more than made up for a 'crappy' childhood. A very spoiled woman, she was- and what about her OWN parenting??
Sometimes, after becoming parents themselves, those with difficult childhoods become the type of parents that they needed as a child and are wonderful parents. I know 3 brothers who all chose not to have children because they were afraid they'd be like their father. I know another man with an alcoholic abusive father who never had children himself.
My nephew's wife was crying when she said their firstborn would never have to go through what she experienced as a child.
Queen Victoria had incredible wealth, power and privilege when her children were born. She could've been a loving, caring mother.
Great biography, and i liked the images.
Wasn't there an East Indian man who was her "companion" at the end of her life? This is the first time I've heard of Mr. Brown, the Scot.
Kinda ironic that the queen whose reign became known for the stereotype of "repressed" women was very much the opposite! 😉
John Brown is well known, I would say a lot more than the story about Abdul Karim. Abdul Karim was her servant for the last 14 years of her life and their relationship was more maternal. John Brown worked as a gillie and was a friend of Prince Albert. After Albert died Queen Victoria and John Brown continued a close relationship until his death in 1883. She was devastated once again when he died.
Both of them had movies about them, where Judy Dench plaid Queen Victoria (Mrs. Borwn and Victoria and Abdul).
I’m a poorly educated American and knew about John Brown. Mostly because of the movie.
@@tananario23 Tons of books and videos available to be a well-educated American.
The Indian you mention was her clerk, Abdul, who was a Unani physician by training, and well versed in Persian and Urdu poetry.
I understand that Abdul Karim was treated very shabbily after her death.
WHO is the narrator of THIS particular video? Does he have his own channel, if so what is it please??
I believe the narrator to be Francis Maxwell, although I am not 100% certain. The voice is so similar to one of the presenters on The Meidas Touch network.
The Bugs Bunny meme got me. 🤣😂🤣😂
And it is always amazing how German they were- that's not meant to be a negative comment- and their sirname was Saxe Coburg und Gotha- then along came Queen Mary ,another German who basically rescued the British monarchy from going off the rails.Great video .
Mary of Teck? Who was so absent from her children's upbringing she couldn't tell their nanny was having a nervous breakdown and abusing the heir and the spare? Their youngest son with epilepsy was housed on a farm. George V was overly strict. Hard to warm up to that pair. The damage they did to the next generation...!
@@653j521Agree, but I meant the public image of the monarchy . Happy childhoods in monarchical families seem to be a bit of a rarity . Look how the crown Prince of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire was brought up- he ended up committing suicide .
I like learning about history including the history of the royal family, but when I remember we *still* have a monarch I feel embarrassment.
And Boris Johnson didn't make you feel that way? He and Trump are like brothers by another mother.

@@caronstout354 It is a very liberal re-telling of the genuine story. It is a movie made to entertain, let's remember that.
I always thought Victoria was a insecure selfish woman who blamed others for things they hadn't done mostly her children. Her own feelings were more important than her children or the country she basically opted out when Prince Albert died and abandoned her people. That's selfish.
The painting @13:28 u will see V holding a portrait of John C, the man she DESPISED, in her hand 🤦🏻😆
Sadly, John Conroy had a very good life with honours and privileges, and even demanded and received a large pension for some imagined service to the nation.
