Hello friends! I have just started a new channel called “Melanoma Mom” that will document my skin cancer journey, review sunscreens, review Upf clothing, and chat with the skin cancer community. I’d love for you to subscribe to that channel if you would like to keep up with my journey and need sun protective reviews of products. Thank you for sharing your story. I had surgery on my right forearm for Melanoma June 1st 1999. They did the surgery different back then so I have a huge scar and a skin graft scar on my right upper thigh as well. I truly understand the roller coaster of emotions. Thankfully, I've been clean of any skin cancer since then; however, just 2 weeks ago had a biopsy on a mole on my back left shoulder. Although the result was not felt to be melanoma, they want to take a larger sample so back I go in June for that. Hoping the result is negative! Definitely make sure you have the skin checks as often as you are supposed to and do all the things you mentioned. I'm so glad you caught yours when you did!!!
Wow! That’s amazing. Thanks for sharing. Melanoma surgery and treatments have come so far. Sorry to hear about your biopsy but glad it’s not melanoma. Are they doing a punch biopsy to remove more of the margins or something more drastic? I’m currently waiting on the results of 3 biopsies I had last week. Every biopsy since my melanoma has gone back “precancerous” so they always have me come back in for the punch biopsy to remove it all.
@@ShawnMHowell They are doing something to get more of the margins, yes. Not sure if it is a punch biopsy or something different. Glad they are removing all of the precancerous ones; best not to take any chances!

I’m so sorry you have melanoma. It is scary. If you need a community of melanoma people who have been where you are, I started a second channel called Melanoma Mom. 🖤
Finally getting around to watching your diagnosis video! We can’t beat ourselves up about our prior sunscreen habits (easier said than done, I know). I remember my dermatologist telling me after my first diagnosis to not blame myself because melanoma doesn’t necessarily mean that I was being irresponsible with sun exposure… but in my case, I definitely was a sun worshiper. 🤦🏼♀️ All we can do, is do better from here on out, and to be diligent with our kids! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Meredith. Thank you for the kind words. My doctor told me my melanoma was definitely from too many “significant sunburns” from my childhood…so I blame my parents. Even though they didn’t have the education to know any better. I actually don’t blame them now and understand that the American culture needs more education and awareness because being “tan” and getting sunburnt is a culture norm and viewed as “healthy.” I do recognize that not everyone’s melanoma is from sun exposure. Which completely sucks. 🖤 since my diagnosis I have 2 friends and another relative diagnosised with melanoma at worse stages than mine. It’s scary and I know you understand this more than myself. Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing your journey too.
Hi Shawn. I had a melanoma removed 7 years ago in exactly the same place as yours. I am checked every 3 months and alternate between my Dermatologist and Oncologist. You are doing a great job being pro-active with sun protection. May I offer a tip? Get sun protective sleeves to wear when driving in the warm weather and outdoors. Also, have a thorough eye exam as melanoma can sometimes show up behind the eye. God Bless. Patti
Hi Patti! Thanks for sharing with me. I do have sleeves but haven’t worn them yet. Just been wearing long sleeve Upf shirts and jackets. But I have been wearing gloves when driving. I have an eye exam coming up so I’ll definitely alert them to my melanoma. Thanks. 🤗

I was just diagnosed with melanoma 3 weeks ago and had my stitches removed last week. I had it on 2 different parts of my body. My dermatologist did the surgery so I'm wondering how common that is or do most people see a cancer specialist? I was a bit freaked out at first but I have a few autoimmune diseases so I'm kinda used to getting bad news on my health. I hope you are all healed up and doing well. I did to much early after I got the stitches out and my incision opened up.. So now it's not healing very well. Best of luck to staying cancer free!!!!
Hi Brigette! I’m so sorry to hear if your diagnosis and sorry to hear you busted open your stitches. My dermatologist referred me to a surgical oncologist that specialized in melanomas because of the size of my melanoma. Mine was .37mm. My dermatologist said that if it had been less that .3mm then they would have removed it in his office. My scar has healed nicely. I have a new pic of it on my TH-cam stories. I’m putting liquid silicon on it to reduce the redness. I just had 3 more biopsies done and am awaiting results from the dermatologist. The waiting and not knowing is so hard.
Having worked in Plastic Surgery, I can tell you that you can have the incision revised and resutured. Also, you should DEFINITELY see an oncologist, bringing your pathology reports with you! This is very important, especially if you’ve had it in two places! Do this ASAP! Good luck!

Thank you so much. You are kind for saying so. It’s been about 8 weeks since my surgery and my scar has healed nicely. Just a red line that I’m working on reducing and smoothing with some liquid silicon. 🤗
No. I was diagnosed with stage 2b breast cancer. Invasive ductal cancer. I had 3 surgeries because my tumor had fingers so l had unclear margins with 2 lumpectmies and required a mastectomy. I didn't need chemo or radiation but lm on an antitumor oral med for 5 to 10 years. No side effects. The first year is alot of learning and testing. I do fatique easily. I live in Ontario Canada. Not sure where you are.
I forgot to say my sister developed a melanoma on her back that we noticed when a picture was taken in her bathing suit. She had it removed and is fine with yearly monitoring

Thank you for this informative video. Maybe you could tell people in a future video how MUCH sunscreen they need to use. I've heard we need 1/4 teaspoon just for the face! Most people don't do that. Glad you are doing well. I had 3 pre melanomas removed 15 years ago so that forever changed my relationship with the sun.

I'm a bit confused by the wording of your question. So I hope I'm answering you correctly. I use a minimum of spf 50 from head to toe. I like brands with zinc oxide in them. Right now I'm using Coola, Australian Gold (for my face), Sun Bum.
@@ShawnMHowell Sorry I meant if the UV is say 2 would you put sunscreen on or only if it was say 4? I usually put sunscreen on when it's 4+ but wondering if I need it on when the UV index is lower too :)
@@watchthisheadspace the only time I don’t put sunscreen on is when the UV is zero. Honestly, when I’m getting ready for my day I put on all my sunscreen so that I don’t forget. I then reapply every 2 hours if I’m going to be outside...which I am in and out all day due to caring for my 3 year old. I’m slowly getting into the habit of just having it on all the time.

Thank you for asking. My melanoma was superficial spreading thankfully. Stage 1b and .37mm deep. So it went down to the muscle but hadn't spread into my muscle yet. It was caught early thankfully because I noticed the freckle getting darker over about 6 months. I've had 3 more spots removed that were all precancerous. Have you had melanoma?
@@buleberryjam177gaming7 do you have melanoma? Crossing my fingers and praying it’s not hiding somewhere else in me. I’m being super vigilant with sunscreen and Upf clothing. I go to the dermatologist this Thursday for a skin check. I’ve got my eye on 2 spots I’m going to ask him to biopsy. 🤞
I’m so sorry you had it in your eye. That’s awful. I have had horrible eye sight since I was 6 so I get yearly eye exams. Just had one in July and everything looked good in my eyes thankfully. ❤️
Beside sunscreen, a vigorous immune system can be beneficial in preventing and dealing with melanoma, the DNA in the cell is nnot functioning properly with melanoma and sometimes the immune system can repair the DNA. So, pray, eat lots of fruits, veggies and grains.
I was recently diagnosed with skin cancer the least dangerous kind. My motherthe most dangerous kind. Check your WHOLE body. Mine grew uncredibly fast. So keep track.
@@ShawnMHowell Yes it is scary the spot where they they did the biopsy is growing again super bummed they didn't get all of it then. I go back on the 14th of this month for an excision. So bummed that I have squamus.

You are beautiful ❤️ You are an amazing person The way you shared your story It touched me, I have a black spot in my head and I was too scared to test it. I live years under Fear that I have cancer and I couldn't check it out. Would you like to describe us the difference between a mole and a cancer one?,I wish you live longer than you wish. May god be with you. Stay strong 💪
Thank you so much for your kind words and for listening to my story. Go get that spot checked by a doctor or dermatologist immediately. Skin cancer can only be determined by a biopsy. Skin cancer looks differently on everyone. Dont live in fear. Get it looked at and biopsied as soon as possible. ❤️
@@ShawnMHowell your wards gave me courage, I went there for a check, They did not even ask for biopsy. It's on my scalp,I never really noticed before. So I had a picture of mine baled head, It was there 18 month ago. The doctor said it's mole. And hair is growing on it. I am confused what should I do l? Should I be done an autopsy? Thank you for your wonderful words. How are you doing anyway? How's this 6 month?
Go and get a second opinion from a dermatologist if you are worried that it may be more than a mole. The only true way to have piece of mind is to have it cut off and biopsied. Or take pictures of it once a month and see if it changes then you have evidence to take back to your doctor. I’m doing great 6 months after my surgery. Thanks for asking. 🤗 I give regular updates over on my second channel called “Melanoma Mom” if you want to follow me over there.

Good luck!

Hang in there, stay positive, keep praying.❤️
Thank you. I am 6 months post op and no reoccurrence of cancer. 🤗
You have such a sweet, sunny nature. I wish you the very best luck, and a speedy recovery. 🙂💝
Thank you so much. You are kind for saying so. It’s been about 8 weeks since my surgery and my scar has healed nicely. Just a red line that I’m working on reducing and smoothing with some liquid silicon. 🤗
That’s good to hear, stay strong dear, and let your sense of humour carry you through, even on the tougher, cloudy days. ☁️🌤☀️🌈💫 xx
It is a roller coaster ride. Its an unknown world until your in it.
Best wishes and positive thoughts.
Thank you. Do you have melanoma?
I’m so glad to hear that your sister is doing well and hasn’t had a reoccurrence. ❤️
Oh wow. You’ve been through a lot. Cancer sucks. I’m glad to hear you don’t have side effects. I’m down in South Carolina on the coast.
I never paid attention to melanoma but now am very concerned, waiting on biopsy .
Praying for you as you wait for answers. 🙏

Thank you 😊
Thanks for sharing. Much love
Thanks for listening to my story. 🖤
Great tip! I’m still learning. I’ve considered starting a second channel to share what I’ve learned about sunscreen and Upf clothing.

Hi Kathy. Thanks for listening. ❤️
What UV do you put sunscreen on for?

Did they ever tell you what type of melanoma it is? How deep ? Or the stage?
Thank you for asking. My melanoma was superficial spreading thankfully. Stage 1b and .37mm deep. So it went down to the muscle but hadn't spread into my muscle yet. It was caught early thankfully because I noticed the freckle getting darker over about 6 months. I've had 3 more spots removed that were all precancerous. Have you had melanoma?
@@ShawnMHowell So so sorry to hear this. Unfortunately they may say it hasn't spread but believe me it comes back.
@@ShawnMHowell Glad you are being hyper vigilant. My sister has it.The advances in treatment are getting better.
I’m so sorry to hear your sister has it. Watch stage is she?
your doctor was very good to suggest you a skin check
Yes! I never would have gone for a skin check had it not been for my OBGYN. So thankful.
Please get a dilated eye exam. I was diagnosed with melanoma in my eye in January 2017.
I’m so sorry you had it in your eye. That’s awful. I have had horrible eye sight since I was 6 so I get yearly eye exams. Just had one in July and everything looked good in my eyes thankfully. ❤️
It's soooo sad but positive thinking changes all thing ❤️👍 think positive and be positive.
I’m so sorry. It’s scary isn’t it? My oncologist suggested mole mapping for me so I have that happening soon.
@@ShawnMHowell Yes it is scary the spot where they they did the biopsy is growing again super bummed they didn't get all of it then. I go back on the 14th of this month for an excision. So bummed that I have squamus.

You are beautiful ❤️
You are an amazing person
The way you shared your story
It touched me,
I have a black spot in my head and I was too scared to test it.
@@ShawnMHowell your wards gave me courage,
I went there for a check,
They did not even ask for biopsy.
It's on my scalp,I never really noticed before.
So I had a picture of mine baled head,
It was there 18 month ago.
I give updates after each of my dermatologist and oncologist visits which I go to every 3 months. 💛
