- Brisbane woman Emma Betts was just 22 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma.
Instead of retreating, she put herself in the spotlight in her mission to make others aware of the importance of sun safety and raise money for melanoma research.

My sister's first encounter with melanoma was when she was 16 years old and a sophomore in high school. Her left eye was removed. Her next bout was 25 years later when it appeared in her liver. They were able to remove part of her liver but we almost lost her due to a huge amount of blood loss. She pulled through and a few years went by. It went to her colon, which they were able to remove about 12" and resection. Years later, she lost a kidney and her adrenal glands. I am happy to say this warrior is still alive and will be celebrating her 71st birthday in March! God bless her and all who fight this terrible disease. ❤

Regarding “cancer girls story”...Thank God for the doctors taht were able to catch the cancer in time before it spread more. They were obviously able to cut it all out each and every time successfully. Now. If all doctors were like these ones there would be a lot less deaths resulting from cancer winning. So many people sadly lose their lives because drs never found it in time ....or misdiagnosed which gave cancer time to spread...that’s hard to live with. Knowing their lives could have been saved if they had been diagnosed correctly....u can be so angry at the drs but it won’t bring back your life....

But it's NOT the kiss of death. I was 23 when I was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic malignant melanoma. In two and a half months, I'll celebrate 40 years cancer-free. Do everything you can to fight it, then realize you are doing everything to be free of it........and then relax. Worry is a worthless emotion. It seems like Emma had a life well-lived. I just wish it had lasted longer.
I needed to read this, thank you. Awaiting biopsy results, currently stage 1b and i want to know that it's not all doom. Scared!

@Fliss098 You're right, it is. But at one time it wasn't. I wanted all the information I could find, and it wasn't easy to access. What I did find was extremely negative. I remember feeling numb for a couple of weeks. Then my treatment was determined, I convinced myself that I was doing everything I could, and that worry is a horrible emotion.
The worry went away. Just like that. Some people here are going through what I went through 40 years ago, so if I can show them that it is not a death sentence, then yeah, I'm going to say it.

Someone said that removing the moles with cancer cells might release them into the bloodstream and that might be why Emma could get so sick a year after the mole was removed. Now I am wondering if that could possibly be true-? Can you share your story more- Did you have moles removed?
I’m a very moley person and I’ve never gotten a skin check, I’m only 19 but I think it’s time just to make sure. I’ve never realized the risk and how common it actually is.
You're very wise. Start by gradually having them removed a few at a time. Insurance should pay because it prevents problems in the future. It's no big deal and will give you peace of mind.
Please do I went because of my brother Kevin had melanoma, never expected to have squamous cancer found on me....had it removed and have had several other bouts on different areas. Get your base exam done and keep a watchful eye on your skin. My brother Kevin Knox passed away of Melanoma. I miss him dearly. Take care.

I hope you’ve been checked. I never dreamed I would have melanoma but it happened. I had put off getting checked so a simple removal wasn’t possible.
My daughter is 19 also and has a lot of moles. She has one that does concern me. I'm making her an appointment, Monday. Today, is Saturday.
I had a malignant melanoma on my thigh and had surgery on my 35th birthday. The surgeon cut a chunk out of my thigh and I’m still alive at 75yr of age. I give credit to GOD and my surgeon.

My sister in law Linda ignored the changing mole on her back. By the time she overcame her fear of getting it removed, the cancer had spread everywhere. Within a year she passed away at age 48. I'll never forget the pain and grief of telling her 2 girls aged 10 and 11.

Oh my god my mother's name was Linda. 😮 and she passed away at 58. Same story. Mole on the back and the doctor said she was fine and then took off with everyone's medical records and five years later... She was gone. ...😢
Very touching . 16 years ago my brother died in less then a year from melanoma. He had terrible health insurance. The doctors said that they got all of the cancer. They were wrong ! By the time he realized it , he was having terrible night sweats, and his lymph nodes in his abdomen were bulging out the size of baseballs. previously he went to to tanning booths regularly because he was so pale. Melanoma is a very painful way to die . Tommy never use sunscreen. They say it May have made a difference. One great thing is that he had turned his life around from alcoholism and drug addiction to faith in God and Jesus Christ . He owned his own taxi and helped street people and the elderly. The town he lived in honored him at his passing with a front page story of his life. He had been a Christian at least 10 years before his cancer .

Emma's story is beautiful and touching. I was diagnosed with stage II B melanoma in July of 2006, at the age of 27. We found it in the lymph nodes of my right groin, so I was then at stage III B. I did a year of Interfueron Alpha, and luckily have had clear scans since then. I'm now 41, and cancer free. I have two beautiful daughters and a loving wife. My story was much luckier than that of Emma's, and countless others. But, I feel a kinship to those like Emma because it reminds me of the direction my life could have gone. It helps me to snap out of all the things in my life that may not seem perfect at the moment. Emma, thank you for the life you lived and the lessons you continue to teach. I think of you, and others like you, with each day I'm given. God bless you and yours forever.

Shirley here, from the US I am 72 and minor health problems that are under control. I am still enjoying my life to the fullest, I will never complain wishing I was young again. Old age is a privilege .
I had melanoma when my 1st was months old. I was so scared I would leave a child with special needs. I survived. This story blows me away, I watched every second and watched parts of it again. What a beautiful soul. During the worst, she lived. What else can be said? She touched my heart and soul. Such a beautiful graceful soul. I am so humbled. God's Speed Emma - - - - - you are, not were, inspiring - forever....
"...this is my lot and this is what I'll have to deal with..." God, give me the strength to live by those words! Amen!

@@coffeeandcream4704 thank you so much. Hes been somewhat stable for the most part since they have started high dose prednisone steroids. He goes through bursts where he's ok for a week then will sleep for a week straight. He's maintaining his weight which is great. Not currently on any treatment other than pain meds, steroids, nausea meds and stuff for his osteomy. He has stage 4 rectal cancer with mets to his lungs. We are terrified of COVID because if he gets it he won't survive. Thank you all for asking and for your love and prayers ❤

My grandmother lost her life in 1965 due to melanoma. It started as a mole on the back of her arm. My Mom nagged her for a good year to have it check, then when she finally did it had spread to lymp nodes. They removed all that were affected and she was clean for almost 3 years. On her last visit to get her "All Clear, Cancer Free" diagnosis, it had spread to her brain. She was a stubborn lady. She worked at her job as a stenographer until the day she passed away. I was only 15 months old.
I worked with melanoma in hospital. Got 12 moles taken out. The last mole on my body did not change for 64 years and suddenly bingo, that mole became black in one month. Got a biopsy despite the dermatologist who thought it was nothing. It was a melanoma and not a very good one. So, people watch out. Any doubt should make you consult.

The same happened to my younger sister in 2001. She had one mole on her knee. It took 7 years but it took her life April 29, 200l.
My husband, a physician died of melanoma after eight years. It was a small piece of mole left when he had had all the moles on his back removed. We had moved to Florida and with the sun danger, he had them removed prophylactically. The one small part left grew into melanoma. Get checked, have exposed moles removed and go to a good dermatologist once per year who will check your entire body. Please, this can save your life. And yes, this is necessary for all of us. My husband was not fair as I am but he had melanoma, while I did not. Think prevention, sunscreen, hats, mole removal and limited sun exposure. Emma was extraordinary and fought so valiantly. Just as my wonderful husband did. My sincere condolences to Emma's family. They must miss her so very much.

I am now fighting a stage 4. It started at stage 3 but it has taken hold.
I have never lost my fight. Being told with my husband there was truly heartbreaking.
Worse came when I told our beautiful daughter's.
And i wanted no tears, I didn't want them to cry. But like when my Precious Mam was diagnosed with a massive brain tumour, I went into denial.
It's an awful shock to anyone, knowing the woman who brought you up unconditionally didn't stand a chance.
That to me was my worse pain I ever had to endure.
I miss her so much now and it's 16 years this May.

@@davinastanton3865 Oh my dear...hang in there. There are new treatments almost ready so do not lose hope. Ed lived 8 years with stage 4 so a cure could be in the works, I love Bonnie Scotland. I just finished watching Doctor Findlay on Acorn..a streaming service. It was great if you get a chance to watch. Please try to stay positive. My Ed was and worked up to two weeks before he died because he loved treating patients! I will be praying for you...so sorry you had to lose your mom. I was disconsolate when I lost my father...thirty years ago now but like yesterday. Your mam is watching you, don't doubt it. Love to your family and to you!

Your husband sounds like he was a brilliant Doctor for sure. He kept his fight going. My heart is heavy that he had to pass away from this awful disease. 😔
They don't do sun scans here at all. You have to fight to get the answers you need. Cancer itself is to many a death sentence.
But i chose not to let it be one.
My oldest sister says how brave I am. Sweetheart I am not brave, i just chose not to let it get to me.
When first diagnosed and i saw my husband's face, I held his hand and told him, I am going nowhere.
We walked into that hospital a couple and walked out a couple with fight on our hands.
I decided to leave it a few days to tell my daughter's because I knew how they would react. I said no tears please, but this was asking the impossible. I did decide early on not to tell my Grandaughters, they certainly don't need to know anything and they are young.
My husband makes me laugh at times, he tries to do everything for me. I have to tell him to let me do it as I am not an invalid, just feel ill at times. And as you will know nobody does it better than we do ourselves. 😊

What an incredible young woman. I never knew her but I will never forget her. I will pass her message along. There are many lessons here, not just about melanoma, but about love, commitment, positivity, kindness and influence. She left the world a better place through her influence.

Shaz I do agree with you on this. It’s also sad that doctors don’t think mammograms necessary before women are 40 years of age. My mom got breast cancer that (sp)...M....Can’t spell it but it spread through out her organs. She was 81 years old when she died last August.
Shanan Alexander once you turn 70, they don’t do mammograms ....I know from my mother in-law they said now your 70, you don’t need them anymore....the thing is, cancer doesn’t discriminate when it comes to age, of any kind ! A brother in-law brother passed away from melanoma.....he was at the beach with wife and young children and a man came up to him and said go home now and go straight to a doctor and get that checked....he had it removed, he passed the five year mark, then not long after he suddenly had tumours all through his body, he passed away in such a short time .....it was a real shock .....as it always is, so many young children get cancers. We need to get doctors ESPECIALLY when they are SKIN SPECIALISTS but just pass you off as too young, not even bothering to check except a cursory glance ....it’s disgusting, drs like him should have their license removed!!

Thank you Emma. I sometimes feel down because I am alone and old. Here in America we have a terrible medical system. It us a system that you can access if you are privileged, otherwise you die. I watched my husband being refused an appointment with a doctor. He was desperate and, yes, he died. Emma you are so lucky that you had access to medical care. you are so lucky that you did not have to deal with this American non medical death system. For all if you in countries that deem medical care is a right for all, count your blessings. If I were younger I would leave this place.
My husband was diagnosed with a melanoma on his scalp and one on the other side of his back 19 yr ago. It had spread to his lymph nodes. After a year of interferon, neupagen and radiation treatments, also countless surgeries and even a chest tube, he has been cancer free for 12 years. After treatments he completely changed to a plant based diet and greatly reduced his stress. Our Christian faith carried us through. Cancer strengthed us and our marriage. God bless you who are fighting this beast. I sincerely hope this gives hope to someone.

My husband, too was diagnosed with melanoma on his scalp. I found it and made him go to the dermatologist. Thank God it was in situ meaning it had not spread. He is well today after several years.

I had a melanoma removed 32 years ago and I have had no problems since but my friend who was diagnosed at the same time passed after only 18 months iam very thankful ....
Twenty years for me. I'm very sad that people still miss melanoma lesions until it's too late.

This is so sad yet Emma tried to do good eventhough she was suffering from melanoma,she was trying to beat it but unfortunately it won! Her parents and husband who never left her side are continuing what she started keeping her legacy alive! May God comfort them and give them strength.

My Mum had a mole that was a few months from being melanoma and a regular skin check is what saved her. Skin checks are incredibly important. Now she's going through another scare which I'm trying not to think bout.
I'm just so sad Emma didn't get a second chance to live her life :/ Life really is so precious. You don't know what is around the corner. The day cancer is cured will be an incredible day.

I had a check in to the dermatologist to get some small moles out and the doctor saw one big one in this stage of pre melanoma too. It made me think of how we have to pay attention to our bodies.
Heartbreaking. I was diagnosed with melanoma in situ. I love love the sun. I did tanning beds as well. Annual skin screenings are a must for everyone.
Im not a moley person I saw one on my knee come out and grow fast over 2months had it tested and it was early melanoma...Im a nurse and knew rt away...thank God.

@@haileennevsmom09 - PLEASE GET THIS CHECKED. The most likely place for women to get melanoma is on our lower extremities. The melanoma I had removed from the top of my foot was also two-toned (lighter & darker brown.) Don't wait! The five-year survival rate if you catch it at stage 1 is 96%. It goes down fast the later the stage.
My mom received the results from her skin biopsy today. She had a suspicious mole removed. Luckily, no melanoma. Reading comments, it shocks me how common this cancer is.....

Right? Im feeling pretty lucky to be in the USA where we have a right to die with dignity. We dont have to suffer minute to minute loosing all faculties first.
My daughter will be 3 in April. She's a natural redhead with porcelain skin and very light to medium blue eyes... Thank you for this! No one has ever ever told us that she's more at risk, even though I'm fair skinned myself. I'm going to remind her doctors of her skin tones, so maybe they will in the future warn the other patients of her skin tone, and also we are going to immediately purchase the best sunscreen for her and use religiously. Ana Mac if you have a family history, you have a higher chance. I’ve been check and I’m a redhead naturally. My grandpa had melanoma himself. But sunblock is the key difference. Make sure you apply it.
I am 63. Grew up in southern California. I have had sunburns lots and lots of times. I have now been going to a dermatologist yearly for a few years now. She freezes bad areas. There is a cream for large areas that works. I now will use an umbrella on sunny days when walking at noon. Sunscreen and hats when working in the yard. Know the types and what to look for in the skin. Also, redheads can be bleeders more than others. A doctor asked me after my brown haired daughter had her tonsils removed years ago. No problem but just more blood during the procedure.

I thought it was common knowledge. Its almost beat into us, the lighter the skin mantra. Though it goes all ways, I myself am getting moley, as did my aunt, mama and grand. Were all mainly of black ancestry. Cancers suck and skin is tricky.
Protect her eyes also. Make sure she wears good sunglasses. My cousin just passed from melanoma of the eye. She had light blue eyes. It’s important.

My pal Frank (FranKtheTank) was getting your meds 10 years ago. He left his wife daughter and all who adored him during the trials, but its so amazing to know that what he did, made the lives of others so much better. Keep immunity therapy going. Something has broken amongst us, that brings this in. With Frank, i was looking at pictures of him as a little kid. He at around 7 had a mole. They took it off. I said to his wife, my bestie that the mole was it. 40 years later it came back. Crazy. He fought. We adored him.
I’m a red head with fair skin too. I’ve had a few cancerous spots removed. I never used sunscreen because i hated the feel of it on my skin, but I wasn’t a big sun worshipper. Don’t take your skin for granted. I never will again

they never mentioned a mole that hadn't been checked,. The first sign was the lump (lymph node) under her arm, according to this. . .

So incredibly heart wrenching. So many people with this here (and elsewhere) talk about wanting to help others. It would be so beneficial to have some site online that people could post images of their mole/spot. It would help so many - especially people who don't know what to look for, or who question a spot on themselves.
I've had 3 precancerous moles removed and about 25 more. Yes I was a money person, not so much now. I still get checked twice a year. If only Emma and all the others who have passed from this hideous disease ( Emily Hayword) were as lucky as I have been. My heart breaks for them. Cancer is so unfair

@@signsfrombeyond4863 the reason why they remove it is so that it never gets to the bloodstream. They remove a huge chunk of the skin around each mole to make sure its all taken out. Its pretty much game over (stage 4) when it reaches the bloodstream after all.
I’m fair and started getting pre-cancerous lesions in my thirties, so I stayed out of the sun for thirty years. Last year, my doctor caught a melanoma on my chest. Thank God it was a stage one. Our skin never forgets, so get those skin scans and use sunscreen, people!

They don't care. They are not fit enough to be called Medical Staff.
When you are so afraid and you need someone to explain to you everything, but you don't get it back.
I was so shocked when I asked but how will I know if it's spread.
This is the surgeons exact words.
If you get really bad headaches, you will know it's in your brain. If you get blood through your stools, you will know you have Bowel Cancer, and last but not least, if you start coughing up blood, you will know it's in your lungs.
I am now Stage 4 and still fighting.
All because I had an odd looking mole on my back.
Up until then I hadn't given Melanoma a thought.

Davina Stanton oh wow Bonnie that is so so sad....I know there are many uncaring blasé doctors out there, but if a doctor said that to me I would have gone and asked another dr for his/her opinion .....our daughter is not even thirty and a few weeks ago had her second cancer removed from her face they didn’t even knock her out this one on the side of her nose and the numbing wore off half way through so they gave her more, she had to have a skin graft for it and before they finished she said I can feel the pain. It had worn off for the second time dr said exactly “don’t worry we are almost finished” so they finished stitching her up and she felt every single thing !! Then they did four puncture holes in her temple to see if the cancer she had treated on that spot was gone, she felt all of that too. Then after they said she could have paracetamol....does NOTHING! She went to her doctor and got some Endone for the pain next day ...it was disgusting the way she was treated. When she went to the skin specialist because she has had three on her face in two years, specialist just glanced over her and said your ok .....he didn’t look closely and didn’t use any light to check anything ....each one has just started as a tiny red spot ....she is going to go and have a skin check with a private dr this time ....it’s strange because I watch medical shows and they must be just that SHOWS...ALL ACTING, because drs in England Ireland Scotland Melbourne....all over the world have done really amazing things in their care and helping curing very sick or injured yet so often we seem to be hearing horror stories so it really makes you wonder....if you want to look at a natural side of healing, yes even cancer, may be too far advanced but I would try anything, keep a very open mind but Medical Medium Anthony Williams has had amazing stories...I have even through Instagram spoken to others given months to live and have gone plant based diet, then heard about Anthony and adopted his protocols for healing and are now 100% free of any health issues,...so if you are up to it google his name, lots on his website, Soundcloud you can listen to his podcasts he is on Instagram, utube and Facebook and you can read many amazing stories of before and after including photos ! Some stories are mind blowing....FIRST secret to protocol is drinking 16oz of celery juice every morning on empty stomach...I hate it but have done it on and off for several years and have stopped eating some of the foods he says to avoid, I just can’t give up my skim milk lol....check it out .... I always thought Doctor's are here to help, not to treat you in such a way.
I also didn't get a General Anesthetic for my first surgery, and if it hadn't been for a lovely nurse who was taking my sats, I don't know how i would have gotten through it. She could tell that surgeon, you are hurting her. That was he worst surgery I ever had. To think a mole could be so dangerous. 4 inches across and 4 inches deep he removed. 😔
My husband and daughter's were waiting in the waiting room and knew nothing that was going on. My husband asked the nurse who was in the recovery ward how I was, because I am awful with General Anesthetic. And I was prepared to stay. Twice the Radiographer put dye into my back to show my lymph nodes, to see if it had travelled there but my lymph nodes didn't show up at all. I was terrified that the surgeon was just going to do them under a local Anesthetic. But he didn't, I had to go back and get them done and stayed in.
Now its been ongoing since.
Thankyou for telling me your daughter's story and may she have no more trouble with this illness.

Cancer is such a terrifying disease but it's not always a death sentence.
I had to go to bed last night, the headache was so bad. That's a first for me. I have refused Morphine already. I took it once and i couldn't stop being sick.

There was no sunscreen when i was young. And i don't blame anyone for it. Nothing was known way back then. And I live in Scotland, so when the sun shone you were out all day long. Without a care in the world.
For me, my worst part was telling my daughter's and sister's. The pain was etched on their faces. 😔
For me, it was no worse than my worse pain i have ever felt.
The day my precious Mam passed away. Being told she had a terminal brain tumour and only having four weeks, days and nights with her, I truly believe I was in complete denial. Me, the one who always made everything better and this time I couldn't.
The pain was so severe, it broke me as a person. 15 years on, I still ache to see her. 😢💔
The day my husband and I were told, I immediately went to him, took his hand and said, I will get through this.
We walked into that hospital and came out a different couple.
He is heartbroken and for all i tell him I haven't changed as a person, he persists and doing what I have always done in our home.
I have to win this battle because my husband and family need me here with them.
Yes i have bad days, but who doesn't. 😊
But like Emma, I want to get this out to people. Always get yourself checked please.

Hi my dear friend, the Melanoma has metastified into my liver and lymph nodes now. 😔
I go into hospital tomorrow at 11 30 to get my lymph nodes removed. Then to Oncology for tablet form Chemotherapy.
Sorry I have taken so long to answer you.
Melanoma can metastifie itself to anywhere in your body sadly.
At the moment I feel I am living in a nightmare.
I describe it like a bramble bush because you never know where it is going to turn up next.

And last week i've read a study about diosmin(made of citrus fruit's peel)(drug's name daflon 500 in my country) i use it for varicose veins) .but according to study it decreases spread of melanoma to lungs. Resveratrol also helpful but diosmin is strongest. İf you write 'diosmin melanoma' at search motor you will see researches about it but sure do not forget to ask to your doctor. Sorry about my english.
Watching while waiting..... My 17 year old son had a mole removed yesterday and the answer will be ready in 6 days. Our doctor/our system (we are danish) allows speeding up the proces if cancer is suspected. His father has had skincancer and his big brother has had melanom 2 years ago. They are both doing great, but the road to "doing great" is long, hard and just so scary. Glad that immunetherapy also is availeble here in Denmark🙏🙏

Two years ago after I noticed that mole on my arm looked "funny" I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Melanoma, six months ago after one of many PET scans it was discovered that the cancer had metastasized to my colon, my lymph nodes and my brain. Since then I have had a colonoscopy, a number of lymph nodes removed from under my left arm and radiation. I am currently undergoing a twelve month course of immunotherapy. I am going to beat this terrible disease, get past this tough part of my life and confident that I will go on living for quite a few years yet.
Oh Emma what a wonderful young woman you are and Im so so sorry you had to leave this world so soon. Only 25yrs old. So unfair. You had so much more to give to Society. Your poor husband, family and friends. You can see how adored you were but you nade a huge impact to the world. By you sharing your story you have been able to save countless lives by bringing this horrible Cancer to oyr attention, by making us aware to get ourselves checked. Even Im considering getting my skin checked and Im in my late 50s but I was always in the sun all throughout my life. Being blonde and blue eyed and from the U.K. I worshipped the sun and have lived in Sunny California for over 40 years now. I pray for your family.. They must miss you so very much. I hope you are at Peace.....💗

I had a stage 1 melanoma removed from the top of my foot. I didn't know before then that the most common place for women to get melanoma is our lower extremities. I attribute this to wearing sun dresses or shorts with sandals in the warmer months, and while focusing on putting sunscreen on our faces, necks, hands, arms, etc. we neglect our calves and our feet. Twenty years later I am very grateful to the podiatrist who sent me to have a "funny mole" on my foot checked by a dermatologist. He no doubt saved my life.
Writing and self-expression is so therapeutic for everyone involved. Brilliant!

Thank you for sharing Emma's story. Your family is absolutely amazing for doing this to save others. I have had melanoma twice. First one was in my 20's and second one was in my 40's. I was in the sun a bunch as a kid. I go to the skin dr twice a year for a complete check, and more when I see something that I want checked between appointments. I know now how important it is to check your skin. Thank you for getting this message out to people.

I had Melanoma at 29 years old after just having a baby. Had a serious operation on my back, had whole body scans, Doctors said I had fifty fifty chance to live. I'm still here but it was scary. Later I had a neighbor that was early fifty's get diagnosed with melanoma he died within a few months. Emma was a special young lady, she got lucky that medicine adding some time to her life. It is a monster, wear sunscreen and get checked stay out of sun. Needless to say I tell people this all the time. What a sweet and special young lady Emma was.
My 34 year old son is fighting melanoma right now. He has a wife and two kids and had a little mole on the top of his foot. He has had three operations so far including a groin resection where they took all his lymph nodes on his right side. Immunotherapy and P.E.T scans, blood tests and hospital visits are part of our lives at the moment. He’s strong 💪🏻 he is loved. He is scared and I am terrified

@KobeR Hi, they told me to check if the spot changes in colour and size over the next free weeks. It hasn't grown or changed at all since. I took nearly daily photos of it to compare it overtime. I'm planing a visit soon just to follow up. All the best for you.

Wow! This story is close to home. My mum was diagnosed in 2008 with melanoma, she too was accepted to the trial in 2016/2017 but sadly it didn't work at all, we lost her May 7th 2017. Her oncologist said she was her only patient who lasted more than 7 yrs with stage 4 melanoma, I always hoped she would be her only patient who suddenly got cured and lived but that didn't happen. I know the pain of seeing someone you love go through this horrible journey with stage 4, my heart goes out to everyone fighting this battle.
My father had a huge chunk of his chest removed for melanoma. My mother “didn’t like the look” of the mole on his chest and begged him until he relented and saw a doctor.
He had the initial resection and when it came back melanoma, his surgeon didn’t even want to push too hard near it as that might cause metastasis.
They took out his pectoral muscle and I recall as a child being able to see his heart beating through the skin graft he had over where his whole chest muscle had been taken out.
He was a very intelligent and wise man, he asked the surgeons to do a radical resection and chose no chemo or radiation. I’m pleased to report he died many years later at 84. Had he died back then I would have grown up without him. He was 31 years old when he was diagnosed. Since an ounce of prevention usually equals a pound of cure, have any moles checked early and often.

Very moving story of Emma journey with melanoma, I did have a tear in my eye but thought of her being a strong determined young woman.
I was also been diagnosed with melanoma in February 2019 & had spread to my lymph nodes . Had immunotherapy treatment but in Dec 19 with told by my oncologist my cancer was terminal with 3 months to live its now passed my 3 months & I take each day as it comes & try to stay positive as I am also a fighter .
With this Coronavirus we have a Lockdown in Scotland so it’s a lot more difficult not being able to see friends & relatives but thank goodness for social media.
I strongly reiterate what Emma said & anyone having moles should have them checked on a regular basis especially if there is the slightest change.

I was a teenager in the 70's in New Zealand. The atmosphere is very clear and because it's pleasantly warm, not as hot as Australia - you can sunbathe for hours. Add to that we used to slather our bodies in baby oil - I cringe!
I was a teenager in California in the 70s! Same! BUT in San Francisco there was very few sunny days- 🙏 still as I'm fair and blueeyes
i was a child in 70's in NZ as well, i also used baby oil coconut oil and suntan beds in the 80's i have had a cpl of moles cut out, i'm amazed i havnt got melanoma, as yet, my heart goes out to all the people like Emma and their families and friends

Very touching story. I've had several skin cancers, but no melanoma. She was a beautiful young woman who left a strong message for all of us.❤
My best friends mother had a mole on her ankle that was spotted on a holiday in Greece by her son in law, GP , back as early as 2013.. he said " Pat ,that looks suspicious, you must get it checked when we get home"
She didn't 😢
Fast forward to 2021 and she suddenly starts losing her memory, feeling exhausted. She was on the phone one day and just couldn't get her words out properly so decided to drive herself to A&E where an MRI was carried out and a huge mass was found at the front of her brain.
It was melanoma, that had metastasised all around her body, and was immediately put on palliative care .
My friend fought for her to become part of an immunotherapy trial but she passed away less than 6 months later .
The saddest thing was her husband, my best friend's father Dave had died from brain cancer 10 years earlier 😢
