I think a lot of doctors become egotistical jerks ignoring their patients because dissatisfied patients don’t return and tell them they’ve done a bad job. Usually because the new competent doctor helps cover for the gaslighter….

Blonde hair and blue eyes here. My mom had three kids. Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s sunscreen was not that popular. My mom's philosophy was "burn and then you'll tan" instead of taking the time to sunscreen 4 kids. I had a SEVERE sunburn at 17. So bed I was in bed for 3 days. I am pretty much expecting melanoma at some point. My paternal grandfather died from the disease and my dad has had several precancerous moles removed.
Same with me having a tan was the best back in the day. I had all 3 skin cancers but my twin brother and sister are still in the sun and no skin cancers for them.
I had two severe sunburns once at 4 and once as a teen. I was in bed for a few days too. I am not blonde. I’m a brunette with green eyes. Should I be concerned?
I am 77 (female) born and raised in Germany until I moved to the US later. I have always loved the out of doors, lots of swimming at the lake and river during the summer in Germany, sunburns each summer in the beginning, using a sun lamp later when I was a teen because a tan “was healthy” as we were told that the sun was good for us, sunblock didn’t exist back then. Later in the US I fallowed my passion riding horses, did a lot of gardening, boating on lakes and just spending as much time outdoors as I could and all without sun protection. Well to make a long story short, all of my sunburns and “healthy” tans started to catch up with me starting around age 50 with me getting pre skin cancers frozen off my face and body, I also started developing actinic keratosis on my back which are now pretty much everywhere on my body but the worst areas are the areas where I had sunburns. I had my first melanoma diagnosed in 2017 when my then dermatologist had just finished a “complete” skin check on me and told me that I was good to go for another 6 months when I pointed to my forearm and asked him what that large spot, looking like an age spot was since it didn’t look right to me, to which he responded and said “where”? He looked at it and then said “ well let’s do a biopsy just to be on the safe side and a week later I get a phone call saying it was melanoma! I had it removed and went back for a re-check when I had noticed a small jet black perfect round spot on my neck, about the size of a # 2 pencil eraser and asked the same dermatologist about it, and again he said he didn’t think it was anything but to be safe since I already had one melanoma removed he wanted to biopsy this spot, and yes you guessed right, another melanoma! Thank goodness both of those melanomas were what they call melanoma Insitu or melanoma zero because they had not entered the dermis yet and were just sitting on top of the skin. We since moved to another city and have great dermatologists who have caught all 3 of my other melanomas with all 3 of them being Insitu’s. I am very diligent in checking myself every day when I undress and if I see anything at all that doesn’t look right, I make an appointment with my dermatologist. I avoid the sun as much as I can living in Texas which is very hard to do because of the extreme hot and long summers we have here. I wear sunblock, specialty sun protective clothing made by Coolibar like long pants, long sleeve tops, wide brimmed hat and my sunglasses. I can tell you from my own experience that the sun is NOT your friend and sporting a tan is NOT healthy but a sign of sun damage, the Melanomas Clinic at MD Anderson in Houston is full of people with melanomas, young and old alike, as young as teens! Melanoma is the deadliest skin cancer there is, it can and will kill kill you if not caught early on, so please cover up and don’t “fry” yourself in the sun so you can look “healthy” because not only can you get skin cancer, but you will wrinkle terribly bad later on, none of it is worth laying in the sun and I have 5 large scars to prove it!
There’s at least one other skin cancer that is at least as aggressive as melanoma, and that’s Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC). I haven’t had any skin cancers (yet), btw. I’m a breast cancer survivor who’s interested in reading about cancers.
Wow! It's been my experience that dermatologists do not have good bedside manner. The one I have now is great. He biopsied a place on my left arm & called me on a Sunday that it was a melanoma! He was shocked as was I. I have 5% chance of it returning. I had the genetic testing.
My nana used to tell me UV rays were good for acne. I’m glad I didn’t listen to her. She would give me a hard time about being so pale and told me I needed sun. She had had skin cancer several times though!
I hate it when people force others to go under the sun. My ex and his sister used to make fun of my pale skin. They always pushed me to tan. I never listened. I didn’t give a flying F what they thought about the colour of my skin.

FACT: The reason some doctors won’t work on 2 spots that need biopsies at the same visit is because insurance will pay 100% of the first one and reduce the coverage of any others sent for biopsy on the same day. (Minus any copay or deductible). The doctors want 100% so they make you come back as many times as necessary. I know this because I’ve been on both sides…..25 years working with a health insurance claim department AND many cuts and biopsies from my dermatologist. If you have a dermatologist that will only biopsy one spot at a time, change doctors. In my opinion, the whole practice of dermatology is something the AMA should research.

Also, my kids and I apparently have connective tissue issues...Ehlers Danlos has been suggested, along with marfan. No genetic testing, though. This is the first time I have heard of an association.
Stay out of the sun. That said, my brother had melanoma 15 years ago and he’s now fine. He’s an M.D. and he said his lesion was actually reddish in color. He also said that melanoma does spread like wildfire, but that every cancer can be cured if it’s caught early enough.
“Keep an eye on it” sounds lazy to me. And, it gets rid of you. My dentist told me he was keeping an eye on a cavity. I told him to keep an eye on my hiney as it marches out of the office. 😂😂😂
I have stage 3 melanoma and my dermatologist takes it very seriously……you def need to find a new doctor who understands what melanoma is. I don’t get why these doctors say no when you have insurance or even want to pay cash for tests…. It’s not coming out of their pockets. The gene mutations that predispose their carriers to breast, ovarian, etc., cancers might be the BRCA1 and BRCA2. As others here said, that lackadaisical doctor, who should’ve ensured that he had clear margins the first time he excised the tumor, should be reported and should lose his license. He disgusts me. I see a general surgeon for infected cyst type things and he and several other doctors have noticed a few concerning spots and he told me he could biopsy it if I wanted. I haven’t had that one done, but I did have this bleedy crusty itchy spot on my neck and on the other side of my neck I had this quick growing spot that was very dark like purple ish. The itchy one came back BCC and the dark was fine. So I got in with a derm PA and as a new first time patient, the secretary would only book me for 15 minutes! I went back to my surgeon to have more of the BCC removed to get clear margins and I said to him “15 minutes?!? That might be long enough to get everything from my neck up looked at!” He completely agreed. I have hundreds of spots. So, we have a game plan. He said hi will biopsy anything I want whenever I want so I don’t have to be fearful of fighting for it and he said if I have many spots they want to biopsy, he will even do it in the OR because too much lidocaine is a thing. I’m so glad I found him first and he cares so much.
Im so sorry!! I don’t understand how medical science is so backwards. My derm missed a squamous cell and my friends derm wouldn’t listen to her about a mole and when she switched doctors they did a biopsy and it was stage 0 melanoma already.
Where I live there's a doctor shortage and it is normal for appointments to be booked months in advance, God us . I wonder how the other dermatologist that you were referred to was so much better and had the extra time to devote to boot. How do you strike gold twice?
I had a melanoma removed 40 years ago this year. Luckily, I had it removed withing two months of seeing it, so have had no more issues with it. The dermatologist at the time told me I had only a 3% chance of more issues. Now I have issues with squamous cell skin cancer. This is partly due to age and skin exposure. However, it is also due to a Thiazide Diuretic that my doctor prescribed to assist in lowering blood pressure. I found out this drug increases your risk of skin cancer, especially squamous cell skin cancer. Talk about the cure being worse than the disease. Do not trust your doctor to check the side effects of the medicine he/she prescribes!
@@Luka4160 Must have been a stage 1 or lower. This was 40 years ago. and I was told then that I had a 3% chance of it returning. No problems since with Melanoma. However, due to a doctor prescribing a thiazide diuretic to lower my blood pressure slightly, I now have squamous cell skin cancers every 6 months or so. I found out that thiazide diuretics raise your chances of getting squamous cell skin cancer by 30%. I am off of the medicine now, but the damage is done. NEVER take these.
Anytime a Dr ignores you and is not willing to help you, please get all your records and go to another Dr. Dont waste your time You are paying lots of money for mean Drs to not give you proper care... report those that neglegted your health....

Doctors said don’t eat sugar and most of the people think obvious things like sweets or sugary drinks. But, every carbohydrate and starch is converted in our bodies into glucose. Body doesn’t differentiate between glucose made from fruits or from glucose made from eating potatoes, pasta, bread or rice. It’s all sugar. In addition what happens on our skin is a manifestation of things that occur inside our bodies. You may get melanoma in spots that were never exposed to the sun. It’s a fallacy to blame genetics and sun for this disease. There are minerals and vitamins that are responsible for providing protection against damaging extended exposure to sun. Synthesis of vitamin D happens in skin layer thanks to exposure to sun. But primary source of vitamin D is food we eat: eggs and red meat. Ask yourself a question what are you eating? Vast majority of food we eat causes internal inflammation. Cancer is a form of inflammation.

So wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt, buttoned to the neck, a hat and gloves. We do when we are spending the day in the sun. We swim covered up too. It’s much more comfortable than exposed skin with sunscreen. Yeah, it’s hard to be fashionable, but think of your priorities.

I was very busy with my own little children and just starting out my career. Even those with cancer who are stoic through it like my dad was deserve to have their loved ones constantly showing support, love, and encouragement thru it all. U are not asking but my advice is to inundate him with support and spoil him whenever you get the opportunity ❤️

I have Ehlers Danlos type 3 and got one of those displastic moles removed. I wear sunscreen all summer and also whenevr I see the uv index isn't low. I should probably eat less carbs and sugar too.

However, due to a doctor prescribing a thiazide diuretic to lower my blood pressure slightly, I now have squamous cell skin cancers every 6 months or so. I found out that thiazide diuretics raise your chances of getting squamous cell skin cancer by 30%. I am off of the medicine now, but the damage is done. NEVER take these.
They believe what the drug reps tell them. And I doubt they read up on every drug for more info.

It’s a fallacy to blame genetics and sun for this disease. There are minerals and vitamins that are responsible for providing protection against damaging extended exposure to sun. Synthesis of vitamin D happens in skin layer thanks to exposure to sun. But primary source of vitamin D is food we eat: eggs and red meat. Ask yourself a question what are you eating? Vast majority of food we eat causes internal inflammation. Cancer is a form of inflammation.

My problem is that sunscreen also causes cancer
So wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt, buttoned to the neck, a hat and gloves. We do when we are spending the day in the sun. We swim covered up too. It’s much more comfortable than exposed skin with sunscreen. Yeah, it’s hard to be fashionable, but think of your priorities.

Mine too 😢 his dermatologist also put him off when he expressed concern about the spots. He got 2nd opinion but it was too late

I was very busy with my own little children and just starting out my career. Even those with cancer who are stoic through it like my dad was deserve to have their loved ones constantly showing support, love, and encouragement thru it all. U are not asking but my advice is to inundate him with support and spoil him whenever you get the opportunity ❤️

I have Ehlers Danlos type 3 and got one of those displastic moles removed. I wear sunscreen all summer and also whenevr I see the uv index isn't low. I should probably eat less carbs and sugar too.
