Beetlejuice is a 1988 American fantasy horror comedy film directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by Michael McDowell and Warren Skaaren based on a story by McDowell and Larry Wilson. The film stars Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton as the title character. The first installment of the Beetlejuice franchise, the plot revolves around a recently deceased couple. As ghosts, they are not allowed to leave their house. They contact Betelgeuse,[a] a charismatic "bio-exorcist" from the Netherworld, to scare the home's new inhabitants away.

Fun facts (according to ScreenRant):
The snake scene was originally filmed before Michael Keaton was hired, and didn't look like him at all. They later did some re-shoots with a snake that looked like Betelgeuse at the request of studio execs.
Catherine O'Hara and production designer Bo Welch met on the Beetlejuice set. Welch told Uproxx the story of how the relationship happened: "Towards the end of the movie Tim [Burton] told me, we were shooting in Vermont, 'You should ask Catherine out.' And I said, 'What?' And he said, 'Yeah, you should ask her out.' It didn't even occur to me that I was even supposed to talk to actors."
"But since Tim told me to I did and then we dated and we're married and here we are today," he said. O'Hara and Welch were married in 1992.
In 1990, Burton hired Jonathan Gems to write Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. The movie would've followed the Deetz family as they moved to Hawaii and then discovered their company was built on ancient burial grounds. Betelgeuse would be the hero and save the day by winning a surfing contest. Yes, we're being completely serious about this plot.
Love your hair today :)
My favorite fun fact for this movie is the line "Nice Fuckin' model!": it's unscripted and aimed at the prop department; the tree wasn't supposed to fall over ;) The director loved it.
The story is similar to a old 1937 film Topper. Husband and wife George and Marion get in a car wreck, they wake up from the accident as ghosts. It had three films and a TV series. Beetlejuice follows the TV series a bit closer, with the uptight banker Topper and his wife buying the house of the dead couple. They don't have a daughter, but the rich guy is the one that sees the ghosts. I remember enjoying some of the Beetlejuice cartoons, but became less interested when episodes focused more on the side characters like the exercising skeleton, and the tap-dancing spider.
I had forgotten Topper. Thank you
He's The Ghost With The Most, Babe.
It took me like 20 years to realize that the Maitlands own the hardware store at the beginning.
Really? Damn I thought I was slow lol. You thought he was allowed to walk in there and take things without nobody else in there?
@@shadycnetwork they never implied that he didn't pay or that there was no one running the till inside. The guy out front was the barber. Even business owners still pay for their inventory.
@@dannileemeow the guy out front was the barber they went to the hardware store. I guess I'm just more intelligent than most people and guessed yes that is in fact his business. Whenever I get a response I have to double-check and see if the person responding is even the original person I was talking to lol. You're cute so I'll let it slide lol. Just be a good girl and make me a sandwich. Wait a minute dang you're a redhead? I'm not going to make a fire c joke.
Wow i had no clue about that until you said something i was wondering why the store was named maitland’s !!!
@@siscokid61 their last name and you were wondering why that was the name of the store? And everyone wonders why I don't like people lol.
I'm 44 years old and Michael Keatons' still "got it!"
9:02 It's ironic how you said that Winona Ryder is giving off Wednesday Addams vibes...Jenna Ortega, who plays Wednesday in the series will be playing Winona Ryder's daughter in "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice"
I saw that and now I’m so excited to see it!!! Loved Jenna in Wednesday
Christina Ricci has said that her version of Wednesday was created by her impersonation of Lydia , because she watched Beetlejuice and loved Winona's character.
Amelia's reactions are always just priceless!
Such a great film. Winona Ryder set so many trends and became a big icon with her role as Lydia. I am so excited for the sequel to hit theaters in September. The trailers for it make it look really good.
Catherine O'Hara got her start on SCTV. Just like : John Candy - Rick Moranis - Eugene Levy -Joe Flaherty - Dave Thomas . And others. Dave Thomas & Rick Moranis came out with a movie called " Strange Brew " that started off as a short skit on SCTV.
"I've seen the Exorcist about 167 times and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it!" 🤣
This was Winona Ryder's first major role. Between this movie and Heathers (1988), I had a big crush on her in the 80s.
She’s not only an incredibly talented actress, but she’s just such an interesting person in general. I truly feel she adds to the production value of everything she’s in
The music sounds familiar because of Danny Elfman (A Nightmare Before Xmas, Batman... every Tim Burton movie.. also the Simpsons theme). Danny also had a rock band called Oingo Boingo.. kind of a new wave ska band.
I’m willing to bet Amelia hasn’t seen a lot of Geena Davis’ work but that will be rectified
This was the first non-children’s film I watched growing up. Ironically, I saw this air on Disney Channel once (long ago, heavily edited)
it always cracks me up when people get mad that beetlejuice was gonna marry lydia before she was 18... beetlejuice is over 600 years old! even if lydia was in her 50's the age difference is astronomical
Can't wait for the sequel.
No, it’s just another unnecessary sequel that we don’t need. I’m sick of them butchering classics with crappy sequels
It would be interesting to go back and pick a “quirkiest movie” (non-independent-film edition) for each year. Surely this would be a top contender for ‘88.
I think you can put Tim Burton in that running for at least 1985 as well.
It would be a top contender, and don’t call me Shirley.
You'll probably find most of this as you do you research: The story was originally written to be much darker and was written with Vegas performer Sammy Davis Jr. in mind as Betelgeuse.
Ve Neil won the Academy Award for best makeup and has continued to win or be nominated for other films.
Keaton improvised most if not all of his lines.
There was a second ending filmed for Beetlejuice on the waiting room couch. Old Bill the rambling Barber from the beginning of the movie, passes away at some time. He ends up where the witchdoctor is on the couch and starts rambling away. Beetlejuice sees his number and scream/spins his head off.
The FX in this film were practical and stop motion. One of my favorites was "Adams talking head". They made a cutout board, painted like the desk and Alec Baldwin sat behind it an placed his head over the top. Steady camera and lighting made it blend into the background. The crew called them "Cheap Haunted House Gags".
Again, lighting was used to hide the puppeteers under the table for the shrimp cups.
The new film coming out brings back the stop motion, puppets and the "Gags" to keep the feel of the original.
Yay! Another Amelia reaction!! And it's a classic 80s flick!
It's showtime!
When your Goth kid proves 36 years later that it really wasn't a phase...
Moral of the story to all parents: Your goth kid knows what they’re talking about
Loving Amelia's reactions recently; Hot Shots, Adventures In Baby Sitting (when it premiers on here) & this creepy comedy classic :) She's my favourite Popcorn Roulette reactor :) Yeah Tim Burton is the master of creepy movies and this is one of his best... But my favourite Tim Burton movie is Ed Wood (1994) - starring Johnny Depp. He plays Hollywood's worst director, Edward D Wood Jr (based on a true story in the 1950's) it's hilarious & is classic Tim Burton, please react to that next, Amelia :)
Hi there and thank you so much! I’m so glad you’re enjoying my/our content 😊 we can certainly add Ed Wood to the list!
@meliakelle Hi, you're welcome, yes I certainly am :) Excellent, thanks, I'll look forward to watching the reaction to it :)
I saw this in the theater, what a vibe :) Great reaction!
About 12 years ago or so, the Museum of Modern Art in NY did a large Tim Burton universe immersive experience and I went to it. It was amazing!!!
Adam and Barbara were the most beautiful marriage couple. So sweet, kind w/each other😭
Despite it traditionally being included in wedding vows, not even in death did they part. That is true commitment.
I'm with you on Alice in Wonderland being the favorite!
3:50 literally right after this scene dealing with the realtor TH-cam put up a commercial with a realtor saying I want to buy your house 🤣🤣🤣
I love Alice in Wonderland. I was so involved I was even wondering how it would turn out.
The skinny blonde guy during the shrimp 🍤 scene , if I'm not mistaken is Dick Cavette. He had his own show during late 60' & early 70's. He interviewed Jimi Hendrix after Woodstock. Among other stars and musicians. That's if it is him 🤔
It is.
They are making a second Beetlejuice finally
Old Greg that you mentioned is from a show called The Mighty Boosh and is very surreal
Nice reaction!!!❤❤❤😂😂😂
I used to love this movie as a kid I still have a VHS copy lol the cartoon was great too
this movie has the same energy as the burbs
I do feel like there’s some conversations to be had between Tim Burton and Joe Dante.
The music is by Danny Elfman. He composed the Simpson's theme for one. He does all of Burton's movies as far as I know. In "Nightmare before Christmas" he did all of the singing for johnny Depp's character and was the front man and main writer for the band 'Oingo Boingo".
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Yep, I've never been scared of spiders. One fact that might help arachnophobes to know is that spiders and crabs are very closely related. Spiders are kind of soft-shelled land crabs with the ability to climb. They just go about eating some of the nuisance insects and they always steer clear of people. Now, the highly venomous spiders, it's healthy to fear their bite. You just have to remember, they don't live to bite you. They use their bite for 2 reasons, catching prey and self defense.
There’s been some experiences that were inspired by this movie:
- A bar in Hollywood called Beetle House.
- A haunted house at Universal Studios Florida for their Halloween Horror Nights in 2021.
It’s only a matter of time before they do an immersive experience because I can easily see that working because this movie is so vast to expand upon.
Edit: 34:20 Pretty interesting considering that Jim Carrey was one of the many choices for Tim Burton’s Willy Wonka.
Hello Amelia, you look very cute as always!😊 You have to watch Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" (1994), Amelia. An actor in that film aactually won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, so it is definitely worth watching.🏆😉 Great reactions to your first, but probably not your last Beetlejuice film, Amelia!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
Amelia , the host with the most❤
Great reaction. One of my favorite Burton films.
Check out: BIG FISH , SLEEPY HOLLOW, PEE WEE’s BIG ADVENTURE, and EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.
You’re awesome 😎
Keep it up 👍
Favorite Tim Burton movie is Big Fish. Very different from his oeuvre but it's just fantastic.
4:39 “look a puppy!”
A puppy of DEATH! 💀
Wait until you see her reaction to THE THING!
DEATHLY FLOOF IS STILL A FLOOF 💀
I think the entire appeal of it like Ghostbusters say is how unique it is. I wonder if it will be able to generate the same interest via a sequel. My understanding is the Beetlejuice franchise, a cartoon and merch I am sure did not do that poorly but it did not do that well either and mainly because it had problems capturing the uniqueness of this film.
23:29 Old Gregg? From the Mighty Boosh?
That’s the one!
Other comedies starring Michael Keaton include Mr. Mom and Multiplicity. The married couple who hire Beetlejuice are played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. This was followed by a short lived animated series of the same name. Other Tim Burton films include Pee Wee's Playhouse, Batman, Batman Returns, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mars Attacks!, Frankenweenie, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and both Alice in Wonderland live action films
And Night Shift.
It's Showtime.
This movie is, pretty much, what helped Michael Keaton get the role of Batman.
While it's not a tim burton movie, I love Coraline. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it.
It is, however, a Neil Gaiman story, and there’s certainly a kindred aesthetic there.
I FORGOT ALL ABOUT CORALINE OMG!
May have to add it to our queue and bump it up just because I want to re-watch it so badly now! I know that’s a popular cult classic too!
@meliakelle
While you're at it, I'd also recommend "Silent Hill". It's a pretty decent game adaptation, and my favorite game franchise,
@@eddiejravannen I’ve seen a few walkthroughs of Silent Hill and a few of my friends have played it. I plan on playing it once I can find the time. It’s a blessing and a curse that I’ve been so busy lately
@@meliakelle
I was referring to Silent Hill the movie. It's a good creepy atmospheric watch.
I've got to say my favorite Tim Burton movie is Edward Scissorhands, it doesn't have a traditional happy ending and that's very satisfying to me. I think Beetlejuice is a very close second. Although Brazil it certainly up there.
favorite Tim Burton movie
Big Fish
Either all the Maryland DMV's have the same announcer, or Amelia's been to the Westminster one.
I actually live south of MD now and she sounds like that at the DMV’s I’ve been to here, so maybe it’s just a generic DMV announcer? 🤔
@@meliakelle Maybe YOU'RE the voice at the DMV, huh?
@@bkeyser #illuminaticonfirmed
I can’t wait for the sequel this September!😁
The intro music always reminds me of the show "Tales from the Crypt" for some odd reason. My favorite Tim Burton film is "Big Fish" it's one of the few that is both nothing like any other movie he's done, and at the same time perfectly Tim Burton. I don't know how else to explain it.
I'm not sure, but the sequel is either filming or already done! Also all Tim movies should be watched, u should have one whole category for his movies, they are that good! But his True masterpiece is the heart touching, Big Fish!
Pro tip, type in here, Michael Keaton college ceremony speech where he says, I'm Batman! Everyone knows he was the best!
Keaton and geena did a few movies together after this, also. But he did a beautiful film with Nicole Kidman, where he videos the ending of his life, I don't remember the name.
Batman is my favorite followed very closely by Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice.
Alice in Wonderland is from Burton’s…um…”off years.” Pee-Wee, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Nightmare Before Xmas, Ed Wood, and Mars Attacks! are essential Burton. I have a soft spot for his Charlie & The Chocolate Factory…but it’s mostly due to the Elfman music.
I always considered Planet of the Apes the start of his decline but I do think that movie has some value with regard to the performances and the use of makeup. Big Fish is great. Sweeney Todd is fantastic. Charlie and Alices have their plusses but it wasn’t until Wednesday that I really felt he was back so I’m optimistic that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be good. 🤞
@@popcornroulettereactions Oh, how’d I forget Sweeney Todd?! I love that movie - a nice return to form for Burton.
Good reaction Amelia. Beetlejuice is my favorite Tim Burton movie. But of his others, I would say Ed Wood. Highly recommend it. And once you've watched that, you can take on one of the worst movies ever made, Plan 9 From Outer Space. It's the reason the phrase "so bad it's good" even exists.
my favorite tim burton movie is beetlejuice and ed wood
Saw on its original release 7 weeks on the trot...and many, many times since (Lydia was my face and I dressed in jlagk tor weeks after)🎩
The original concept of the movie was suppose to be darker but it was later changed to be a comedy.
Amelia does another reaction to a cult classic so much fun ,more Amelia tim burton movies reactions please
Glad you enjoyed! I’ve seen a lot of Tim Burton’s movies but it’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched most of them, so there will be more!
A lot of reactors are put off by the fact that Beetlejuice only has 15 minutes of screen time.
I honestly expected to see more of him too!
Ed Wood is probably his masterpiece but 6 year old Ben is partial to Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.
Fun Fact: One of the producers of the film wanted controversial comedian Sam Kinison to play the part of Beetlejuice but Kinison's agent never told him about it.
I wonder if his agent thought, “I don’t know. I just don’t see Sam as a dead guy.”
Not one comment on the crazy, amazing score composed by my favorite film composer Danny Elfman. Of course, "Batman" put him on the map, but he was scoring many films before then, especially for Tim Burton.
I think that was her first comment, no?
I'd love to see Nicki's reaction to this!
Same Movie, Different Reactor is something we’ve kinda started doing here lately (with the exception that the reactor has seen the movie), so if she hasn’t seen it already, she likely will!
The football team is a reference to the Marshall football team that tragically died in an airplane crash. The movie "We are Marshall" about plating football after that horror. Leave it to your patrons if it's good enough to watch
How good is this? Early Tim Burton, leaves Disney as an animator, and pretty much gets this. Keaton had a few movies before this as the star, but nothing huge. Mr Mom, the Japanese car guy Gung Ho, Johnny Dangerously was a off center comedy, but he really shines in a movie called, night shift! Burton saw him in that and knew, he had the guy who could ad-lib! Most of what he does in this movie, he just purely ad-libbed! Next year, they teamed up for the best, Batman!!
Fun fact: Michael Keaton is so perfect for the role that, to film the upcoming sequel, he no longer needed makeup. 😄
Have you ever drink Baileys from a shoe?
“Easy now, fuzzy little man peach!”
@@meliakelle I HAVE A MANGINA!
Favourite Tim Burton movie: Ed Wood
Fun, fun, fun, thanks.
Favorite Tim Burton movie: Batman (1989). I was 14 when it came out in theaters, and I absolutely loved it.
A "child" by today's standards but mature enough by the standards then
Especially factoring in BJ's time. He was alive during the Black Plague. Back then mem were marrying 12-year-olds.
BJ didn't change with the times. Lol
Actually 12 was illegal. Girls depending on region could marry as young as 15. My point was Lydia was not a "child". 17 was still acceptable age to marry in the 80s@@SilverWolf442
Your awesome Amelia, wish we could hangout and watch movies, you would be great to have as a friend, cant wait for the next reaction.

Fave Tim Burton movie: Batman. "Never mess with another man's rhubarb!"

Probably like the 'We Were Marshall' , or the rugby team that crashed in the Andes [they survived tho].
To get the fly help me help me help me reference need to watch the original The Fly movie (1958 film)..with Vincent Price..

While AiW is not considered an me of his best I actually perhaps controversially believe that movie is underrated as is its sequel. But we do plan on showing Amelia many Tim Burton films and we will see if her opinion changes.
Best Tim Burton for me is Big Fish.

"I wouldn't want to be a woman in this time period."
What the fuck is that supposed to mean?
Wait until you find out why Jeffrey Jones won't be in the sequel. 🤣
I have always been very submissive so I wouldn't mind being a woman in any time period! All I need is to have my needs taken care of. I learned from mother & grandmother that females do all of the cooking & cleaning and caring for the family. I took over the job when my mother got sick when I was 9. She passed when I was 14 so I kept taking care of dad and my 4 brothers and our pets. I also hosted all the sports parties and get togethers for all the boys and men that came to our house. After I got my own house I continued taking care of everything and everyone at my house as well as the need to fill it with my own puppy and kitten! I even have service uniforms to wear to make the men happy to see a woman in the roles of whatever uniform I wear! Every one of the men seem to ENJOY when I wear any of my 3 French Maid uniforms! 👍👍😉😉👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤
Speaking of mashed potatoes... What the hell does this have to do with the topic?!
@@betelman She mentioned being a woman in that time period!! That is the SUBJECT She and I talked about. The fact that it seemed to have gone over your head doesn't matter to me! I am sure she got my point as well as all of the boys and men that came to my house when I was a girl through the time since I became a woman until now as well as the future men that will come to my house! So IMHOSTFU!!
