KTM 1090 Adventure - Test Ride & Review

  • The Best Adventure Motorcycles - KTM 1090 Adventure
    I have the chance to test the new model of the Austrian brand 1090 Adventure. It was really nice experience. The bike is very well design with everything what we need from big adventure motorcycle. It has 23 litters tank, nice windscreen, beautiful design and strong engine. Regarding to the specifications the wet weight is 205kg. Sound really impressive, but when we add 23 litter of petrol and about 4 litters of oil and antifreeze we will have little above 230kg, which is the average for this category. Some of the cons, at least for me were the low seat, 19 Inch tubeless front wheel and not adjustable suspension, but on the modification “R” this problem is solved, off course for the proper price. The engine V Twin, 1050cc delivers 125 H.P and about 120 Nm of torque. You can easily cruise with 150km per hour all day long. My opinion is that this is the perfect adventure motorcycle for people who love the long distances and don’t really go off road. For those of you, who prefer the real adventure riding with hard terrains 1090 Adventure R will suit just perfect. It comes with 21-18 wheels and adjustable suspension.

    Bajaj owns a significant stake in KTM but sadly do not talk of anything beyond the duke 390 here in India. Gr8 review man!

    Honest review thank you. I must say i am surprised why you choose to review the (S) street model because you love to go offroad too. The (R) has a much higer seat and as you mentioned 21/18 spoked wheel with fully adjustable larger WP suspension. I am very luck to own a 1190 ADV R and i absolutely love it. As Always have a nice day an d a better ride Ciao

      They haven't the R in the shop, that's why, but the main idea was to have the feeling.

    It seems to be the perfect motorcycle for those very few people who have the talent and experience to use what it has to offer. I agree with you when you say that anything over 160 kgs is going to be a challenge in an off road situation for the average to above average rider. My advice would be by all means dream of such motorcycles but when it comes to buying don’t let your heart rule your brain. Warm regards to you.

      This is not the R version. Offroad is less relevant for this model. A lot of people buy allroads just for the ergonomics, and dont care about offroad.

      Better looks, better suspension, better price, better dashboard, specially one button to turn off the ABC, not computer menus like the KTM. Yes, the engine is not that powerful, but I don't need it. The last and the main factor is the real ability, the KTM are not famous with it. I use to ride off road with many guys with KTM,S. I had Husvarna and I was the only rider without any problems for many years. The KTM is very good machine, but I don't trust them as the Japanese brands.

    What a great looking bike. Successor to the original 950 (when it is the 21/18 inch wheel version ) Perhaps the bigger spoked wheels would raise the seat enough for you.
    Would love to see how it goes off road.
    with hard panniers the 1190 looked really wide and a guy I chatted with on eurotunnel said it really hindered filtering. no problem with soft luggage I guess.
    Like it but the rumoured smaller 790 parallel twin would be better for me.

    Considering riding in asphalt with pilion witch one would you prefer, KTM 1090 adventure or Super Tenere?

      Ktm any day..Tenere is 265 kilos and ugly.. Ktm is more powerful more beautiful and much lighter..

    Very nice. honest review! I would also like to know about comfort. KTM has a reputation of not being so comfortable and I think that keeps some people away...

      The comfort is not bad. With a better seat and bar risers will be ok. Most of the people complain because of the stiff suspension, but I like it. I hope this will help.

      Thank you so much for the extra info. I have been very inclined towards the Africa Twin and even more so, after seeing your review. I have already test driven both the GSA and the AT. I was a bit disappointed with the GSA... but will give the KTM a try before making a final decision.

      Try the 1090 R version. It is with 21-18 wheels and adjustable suspension.

    Hey nice review just one question dose the ktm not have adjustable seat ore is that only for R version

      I never heard about adjustable seat on KTM, but I can't say it 100%.

    I'm very surprised to see that a 2017 KTM 1090 Adventure doesn't have adjustable suspension. It's pretty embarrassing, even my 2005 dl650 has them... stock.

      Yeah, no preload on the front, although preload is adjustable on the back.

    weight its not 'average in this clas' its the lightest in this class, you didnt do your homework :)

    1190 isnt sold in 2017. And 230 is average? I know u mean the 1090, but the 1190 at 230kg is the LIGHEST adv bike in its class!

    Will you test any adventure motorcycle which is good for long traveling and offroad sections? There are all to heavy :)

    Now Pavlin I’m going to cry, not just for the bike but also because
    of the beauty of you country, you can lie down on ground without making your
    cloth dirtL.
    The KTM yes it’s a great bike, but too much power for me, I was about to bay a
    990 Adventure 2015 but I felt that is too much power for me and the engine is nosey.
    Another major problem I think is the old 990 is making too much hot coming out
    from the engine making riding in summer difficult or maybe not possible
    especially in my country with more than 50°C in summer. Also what I red about
    990 is the water pump and valves need to be changed is short time !!! We will
    see what KTM will make on the new 800 adventure still on testing and most important
    also the priiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. What
    do you think Pavlin?

      Hi, about the country...it's not what it's looks like. In many ways I prefer your country. About the KTM, yes, I also have some concerns regarding real ability. The old models have some cons, like the water pump, the heating under the seat and many more. It is a great bike, but I will think twice before start a world tour with it. I hope you will understand what I mean.
