It's way too rare in the warhammer community nowadays. AoS players tend to not bother with story and 40k is mostly generic primaris (with special shoulder pads) armies by now, which makes it hard to create a unique army. 30k players are a lot more passionate about creating an army with a story, just because of the nature of 30K. All points above are of course derived from my own personal experience.
I've tried making a story-focused 40k army rather recently, namely my Sons of Horus Chaos warband. As they're Chaos Marines by this time, I used the standard CSM kit for the main infantry squad, but used the SoH upgrade heads and transfers from Forge World to give them more of a Heresy feel. Additionally, I avoided giving them any of the shoulder pads with any kind of Black Legion-esque imagery due to them refusing to submit to Abaddon. I also included some Plague Marines (Slaves to Darkness indicates that there were SoH plague marines before the Death Guard fell to Nurgle), using the Forge World upgrade kit (bought off eBay due to it being OOP). I included some more SoH elements in the form of a contemptor dreadnought (with a dead Emperor's Children marine at its feet) and 5 Justaerin Terminators, alongside 2 HQs in the form of a Chaos Lord (Calth Chaplain with a power maul instead of a crozius) and a metal sorcerer (to add the rag-tag scavenger element that such a warband would likely have). Now it isn't perfect (scale differences being the chief problem), but I still feel very proud of my army overall, and appreciate the joy of creating a story-focused army.
@@boneman-calciumenjoyer8290 I can relate, I strive against this. My iron warrior's are composed partially of new blood using salvaged tech and gear. Post Heresy Marines. I could watch videos like this all day long. I love seeing an army that’s really well painted, and with a great fluffy concept that the artist is passionate and knowledgeable about. You did more with your videos to get me into the Heresy than any other person or channel I can think of. I don’t play Heresy, or 40K, AOS, or any other game, but I love the lore, and converting and painting models from the 30K era takes up most of my free time. It’s been really rewarding, and it’s truly videos like this that I get inspiration from, to make as-yet unseen units and characters from the books, and my own versions of things that I imagine existing alongside what we’ve been told is there. Thanks for sharing all of your work with us, and for putting out such great content.
I'll give UM credit on this: behind the Ward style stuff, they're far less gimmick driven than other Legions. Yes I know, tactics. But the Nemesis Chapter is not Gorod(?) with his brutal huscarl attitude in Unremembered Empire, nor are the UM heroes like Ventanus wedded to a particular weapon or concept. A Death Guard is a Death Guard, it's hard to model say Night Lords as being apart from a very distinct Legion culture. But with the Ultramarines, you can focus on the modern military, Roman, Grecian or a mixture of all three to inspire you. That's good for a hobbyist, and as an example I would cite 'Praetors of Calth'
I really like how you've built the force from the top down, basing the units you take on the idea of the force. Often I see people think of Destroyer companies and other heavy weapon companies as static firebases, but all marine forces should really be built as fast moving strike forces.
outside of GW annoyances, I love seeing excitement and hobby positivity. GW/FW aside, Horus Heresy is bloody cool. Even if GW destroy it moving forward, there is enough awesome up to now to always make it great

This force kinda inspired my Ultramarines. Mines definitely more ground focused with suzerains, breachers, and terminators, but I decided to add some destroyers to get to 2500 points and also because of this list. I love coming back to this video.
My xiiith legion force is all breacher themed so I'm rocking 30 breachers so far, 20 with bolters and melta, 10 with swords and boards, all on mkii land raiders, rocking the box dreads in ironclad config, I LOVE the theme of your force and can't wait to see more for sure
Keep going with it ...you need at least enough to take on a few corridors 😏😉 ( one contemptor per ten man squad as support?lol) An idea and theme on par with this destroyer contingent. Can imagine they partially part their shield wall In order to admit a single laser rapier into the gap to take out long range infantry or a heavy unit or provide covering fire as they continue to advance up a long corridor.
@@wiggy5209 That's how I set up my word bearers, masses of breachers backed up by cataphratii terminators, contemptor-cortis talons, and rapier batteries. Also a very points expensive army but will be so fun when I can get it worked out properly. If not running COBI row will just switch Immortals for Tactical's in Rhinos.
I love what you have done with these guys, especially the minotaur conversion. Very tempted to copy it! I've got a centurion size destroyer company for my world eaters.

Great work Macca!! Very creative! Its clear you've poured in a whole lot of love in building this force!!! Have you considered adding in some mounted Volkite Tactical Support Teams?? Or perhaps Flamer Tactical Support teams? Or even a Heavy Flamer Devastator squad?? Mounting them in atmospherically sealed Land Raiders could be very cool and fluffy!!!
Well as part of the 3k force I have heavy support with missiles (can take rad missiles in the Mournival rite of war) but will likely make a predator squadron with flamestorm cannons and heavy flamers to really feel the burn. Buuuut I also need more troops, so hard choices ahead.
Lovely army mate. Would love to see more videos like this with your/mates armies, where you deep dive in to it as opposed to the shorter videos of army's you did previously at events. Completely understand why those videos had to be short tho dude .
Just wanted to say you’ve been quite a big inspiration for me getting my world eaters force together and the theming behind it. Keep up the great work 👍
Beautiful army Macca, I've been thinking of a later heresy emperor's children destroyer company for a while now after seeing yours on the Vic Heresy page months ago. Honestly the purple and black with dusted and charred marble from a painting and hobby perspective sounds like a dream. Just have to pin down the lore surrounding it now.
I really like the concept and the execution of it. I've always been a fluff player as opposed to a tournament player. I love seeing ideas and schemes like this. As yet I haven't had the chance to play HH, and only had one game of 9th since I came back to the hobby. I prefer the intricacy of picking and choosing positions etc with care, adds more to the game i feel. Themed armies are always fun to play with and against as it tells a story, even if you put yourself at a disavantage. I'm a guard player at heart and generic forces do not appeal to me at all. Macca, keep it up, great video and great ideas are always welcome as far as I'm concerned. BZ
I thought this video was cool . because i thought that was the idea to have fun and have your army tell a story. feels like a Salamanders inferno squad to me. nice work on the paint job too
~1 year later, did you end up weathering the Rhino differently? Excellent force, very thematic. I ended up here after looking up the Nemesis Chapter on Lexicanum/Google.
Stunning army, a great concept executed masterfully! This is exactly the kind of stuff that makes me really want to build a 30K army, putting a lot of thought into their background and theme and approaching it almost as historical modelling, while still being able to be creative with it. Unfortunately time and money constraints mean that I'm not able to jump into 30K for the foreseeable future and also all of the strange stuff GW and FW are doing with 30K certainly make it less probable as well, especially all of the great kits that they don't sell anymore making it much harder to customize your force when it comes to armor marks and so forth. Anyway, very well done! I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the force and seeing the outcome of that thought process, especially as you have executed it so well.
I just went and looked at the 30K range on FW's website, is the situation really so bad? Almost half of the sets are listed as "Sold Out / No Longer Available"... I remember earlier a lot of the kits just totally disappeared from the site, but now they have a lot listed as sold out. There's even many recent kits that are listed as sold out, even some of the primarchs are no longer available like Mortarion. Oh well, I guess I can stop dreaming about ever having a 30K army as even if I had the time and money, half of the stuff I would like to buy isn't available anymore. What a shame...
Hi, absolutely love these guys, love the lore around them and your colour scheme. 👌. Have you managed to choose a weathered theme to them yet? And have you got any more videos of them batreps/overviews etc.. love them
The Nemesis Chapter is a measured and appropriate response to #Trolls leaving The Avenging Son's magnum opus 0-star reviews Love how they look! Visually it's such a simple look, and gorgeous for it. The blue really works well with the black.
I love the army, any conversion you've had really does fit with the theme. I love the muted, warped colours. It takes a fair amount of skill to paint so cleanly and use a variety of colours so sparingly. Love the lore aspect, restricting yourself to really think before making decisions. Also like how you've used the rule of cool over "play to win" so much more immersive, real and give you an idea of how f**ked they were when they took on any task and when defending against the word bearers. Will you buy phosphex mortor launchers at any point? It's rare I like the look of the boxy dreadnoughts.
I don’t have plans for thudd guns, I may look at some kind of predator squadron, with flame storm probably, for the rule of cool, and I can’t help but feel I really lack in the anti-tank department so I will have to look into it down the line.
I play war hounds and alpha legion and after I saw this video I dropped cash and I'm waiting for it all to arrive and I'm going to play my version of nemesis but your insight on this made alot of sense and gave me a good base understanding. Can't wait to play nemesis at my local horus heresy tournaments. No one plays them at all. Actually no one plays pre primRch legions aside from me. I really like the legion names and schemes before the primarchs. I'm not sure what will be my 4th and final legion I intend to make and play. I have 1 question about nemesis...is it viable to add centurion squads? If so, which version? I figured centurion devastators due to the rulings they get with ultra marines, what do you think? I'm not so much a 40k player so I don't have as much invested. So only play carcharadons and retributers.
Your models look damn good bud :-) I really like the theme of 30K seems better tbh even more so now since all the new Marines stuff all looks the same all super clean looking. I don't like that. But I cant support anything GW but there are lots of great modelers out there that make amazing looking 30k inspirted models, some I have and are getting more :-) I love the theme and style so going with something as close to that with a different set of rules.
I feel they are overplayed, and not only that, for a rare instrument why would my destroyers, who are looked down on by Girlyman, have such nice stuff? The idea of box dreads and an out-of-date Minotaur are that they kinda get the dregs of the assets.
I forgot to mention i also added 2 Legion Arquitor Bombard with Spicula Rocket System. I feel would fit very thematically sending down nasty rocket rounds with radiation or whatever extintion level rounds they would use. And strictly for rule of cool considering adding a mastodon , to stroke down and wipe out whatever is left as they run over the dead. But it's a bit of a investment so unsure. But I've never owned one so it's tempting
Can't wait to see more and these look great already. Also in the Guilliman primarch book, was that the nemesis chapter as well? Its been a hot minute so I forget.

Damn man loving these. With the upcoming release of HH 2.0 it is creating that itch to add a destroyer contingent to my Iron Warriors.
Oh, you glorious Salt-Lord. I only began to watch it, but it already looks so tasty, the yummy-yummy Phosphex.
Love this kind of videos. Cool miniatures, some background story and close ups to see the details
Just wanted to say you’ve been quite a big inspiration for me getting my world eaters force together and the theming behind it. Keep up the great work 👍
Lovely army Macca!
Good video... lore I didn't know about, and a nice tidy looking force.
Awesome army bro
Realy enjoyd this video and you love for the minis you done ,
Im so hype to start my own HH force ..just have to decide on with to start with
Really lovely army thanks for sharing it with us
Beautiful army Macca, I've been thinking of a later heresy emperor's children destroyer company for a while now after seeing yours on the Vic Heresy page months ago. Honestly the purple and black with dusted and charred marble from a painting and hobby perspective sounds like a dream. Just have to pin down the lore surrounding it now.
Inspiring stuff Macca! Story Crafting and physical retelling! This is what get 40k players 30k curious.... and #semihardforheresy
Hopefully it makes people 30kurious.
Outstanding work mate. Love the details you go into. It’s all about telling that story. Doing hobby right 👌🏻
Army looks great dude. Really well done.. I'm working on a praetor conversion using kharn currently but the same cloak you have used.
Nice job looks great
Nice army love a thematic force .
This is my favorite chapter of the legion. Grim as hell
Amazing army, would you mind sharing your paint recipe for them?
This man resites the deep lore...
BZ
Love your Smurf brothers army, Must make sure my Black Legion gives you a very warm welcome 👹
Very nice
super cool, this has inspired me to continue my ultramarines force. If that tank drives backwards, should you not rotate the heavy bolters around?
I thought this video was cool . because i thought that was the idea to have fun and have your army tell a story. feels like a Salamanders inferno squad to me. nice work on the paint job too
Nice work.
Having just tried out Horus heresy myself, I may just write up a destroyer variant of my iron warriors list after seeing this
Hi, absolutely love these guys, love the lore around them and your colour scheme. 👌. Have you managed to choose a weathered theme to them yet? And have you got any more videos of them batreps/overviews etc.. love them
Nice work on the dirty dozen of the squeaky clean boys.
The Nemesis Chapter is a measured and appropriate response to #Trolls leaving The Avenging Son's magnum opus 0-star reviews
Love how they look! Visually it's such a simple look, and gorgeous for it. The blue really works well with the black.
Nice job!
I really like the destroyer company you painted TOC. I really like the muted blue black of the main armor. Whats the recipe for it?
This army is amazing! What RoW are you using for them, dear Macca?
Very cool
I hate smurfs period
But these guys arent smurfs and I'm gonna build them. Thx for this video
Nice, I have 111th and 112th company Ultramarines.
Looks awesome!
At 7:37 *I had a electrical impulse inside my mind impulse unit!* XD
This is fucking awesome
Your models look damn good bud :-) I really like the theme of 30K seems better tbh even more so now since all the new Marines stuff all looks the same all super clean looking. I don't like that. But I cant support anything GW but there are lots of great modelers out there that make amazing looking 30k inspirted models, some I have and are getting more :-) I love the theme and style so going with something as close to that with a different set of rules.
Don’t see the legion herald much, shame he’s gone.
great force, any reason you didnt you use a leviathan dread with fluxbombard canon(s)? love the salt but we need much more videos like this!!!
Inspiration to keep working on my 30k list
Can't wait to see more and these look great already. Also in the Guilliman primarch book, was that the nemesis chapter as well? Its been a hot minute so I forget.
is that minotaur an official model? i cant find anything that looks right. arquitor-esque chassis, but is the arquitor that big?
Those castrapherum pattern dreads what kit is that as you said it's not made any more
Forge World Ironclad dreadnought.
@@TheOuterCircle that is really depressing inhave been wanting to start a 30k dark angel so along side 40k in the same colors but all this cool shit and conversion stuff keeps dissapeering
