    289s have very short strokes: 2.87", so they can wind right up. Even the DZ302s were 3.00". Cast crank, too, though on the HiPos & Shelby's, the casting hardness was tested.

    So, competing in a high performance race car, pushing that machine to its very limits for several hours, with your eyes darting everywhere, only one hand on the steering wheel most of the time while the other is continually shifting, your feet are dancing on the pedals and your hands are dry because the rest of you is sweating your nuts off, then hell yeah, I would say that you are an athlete, not just sitting there looking great in your fire suit and helmet.

    3:17 a lot of people won’t appreciate how good and smooth of a recovery that was, but hell of a driver to not miss a beat and correct the mistake.
    For those who may wonder why it’s a big deal, a lot of driving and racing in general is all rhythm based. You get in a rhythm and stay there. If something happens that throws you off your rhythm it can be disastrous both short and long term for a driver. He misses the gear during downshift and goes to third instead of first, which in and of itself won’t hurt the car or make you crash necessarily (if you were under heavy braking and needed the engine braking from going to first to help slow the car then it could happen but here it wasn’t the case), and mechanically is most certainly less disastrous than the inverse (going to first when you meant to go to third under acceleration, often call the money shift). But a little slip like that could’ve thrown the driver off rhythm, made him hesitate in frustration before correcting it, or just been in his head at that next turn or the next time he came to that turn. Instead, he just corrected the mistake and kept driving. It takes a good driver to not let a simple mistake throw them off rhythm and immediately get back into it. Very understated quality, but one which sets apart the good from the great.
    Edit: Just read the description and saw who the driver was. Met Curt at a Trans Am event one time. Super nice guy and extremely knowledgeable racer. 5 minute conversation with him was a treasure trove of knowledge. Not surprised to see him so composed here.

    I have seen these Mustangs out of Cobra Automotive many times over the years at LRP, WGI,VIR and Curt's shop produces some of the most competitive Vintage Mustangs in all of SVRA. A friend of mine once owned and maybe still does own a piece of #530. I do know that when he drove that car it did have a Jerico clutchles 4 speed trans. which was/is legal in SVRA vintage racing. Can't figure why the Mustang ahead of Curt kept braking except to cut down on Curts momentum. As far as not being able to pass, when cars with similar HP and at high speed passing is very difficult. Rember this is not NASCAR where you can bump the leader out of the way.
    If you like this video watch the one from Watkins Glen in 2012. I was at the race.

      Saw #530 at Sebring. Owned 2 GT-350's and drove 1 at Bridgehampton before it closed. #530 is the most impressive one I have seen on the track. Strong car, consistently driven.

    To hear a 289 wind up that high is amazing!! Any engine i built was all done by 4500-5000rpm and certainly would never hold together like this car.Just once i would like to build a 289 that will run like a Raped Ape above 6000rpm

    Noticed that pretty much when you got the car to top speed, it gave the camera's picture a wave kinda thing for the picture, what actually caused this, the force of the car's engine running at such a high RPM or was it something else?????? What a ride, both on the track and the car itself........

    • @marshalllhiepler
      @marshalllhiepler 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Its really sad to see a great driver such as this, who is obviously driving a faster car then the person in front of him lose his nerve and make one or two detrimental mistakes that end up costing him positions. Don't get me wrong, in no way am i talkin shit, he seems to be a great driver, it's just unnerving to feel like if I was him I would be very upset about what happened

    Forget the noise so you can concentrate on driving . Near the end of the race it's plain to see he wasn't really driving, he was following, and the mustang was on the brakes when the Daytona got on his ass, like he was just messing with him. Put the Daytona in the grass twice, once the GT350 left him he couldn't remember which way was right. Shameful.
