    1. tell a concise story
    - the story has a beginning, middle, end, and the lesson-learned
    - the best stories show transformation and growth
    2. ask the audience some key questions
    - the questions should set up the main message of your presentation
    - consider asking 2 or 3 connected questions
    3. share a powerful quotation
    4. share an interesting fact or statistic
    5. use a visual illustration
    Tips:
    - develop your opening after you've created a draft of the rest of the presentation
    - combine openings

    The four stages I'll normally use is Hook, Story, Step to Success, Call to Action. The speech and story needs to also resonate with the likely audience. People like to hear a path to breakthrough.

  • @coachcadden
    @coachcadden 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    This was my opening at a recent speech. As I was walking to the stage I got them to play Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy..... "it was all a dream, I used to read word-up magazine" *music cuts ✂️* I start..... "it was all a dream to compete at the big stadiums in Bangkok at the start of my muay thai career"...... I got the audience early

    Alex, I really appreciate your curating these tips for Best Practices of Opening a Speech. Really concise. To you question about effective openings (and this may fall under #5 to Use Visuals) I have seen speakers be announced, then the stage goes dark and a short but powerful video package is shown that relates to the topic. With the video, the full stereo sound and the darkening of the stage, this can be a very effective opening that you probably have seen. Thank you again for your great content.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I've seen professional-level keynote speakers have an introduction like that. That's usually a great way to kick things off. I've seen some amazing ones. But I don't consider that part of the speech really. That's an audio-visual introduction. If it's not coming out of the speakers, then it's not something I can teach. On an everyday basis, most people who speak in workplace settings are typically just introduced by whoever invited them to be the speaker that day.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not supportive of using much video at all in presentations, especially to open. My reason is simple, showing a video is not public speaking. Professional speakers essentially never open with a video. I don't recommend it.
