From experience, it's not easy to take time away from preparing publications and other academic tasks to produce creative, quality, public-facing content like this. Thank you for making time for these videos, Alex! I'll be speaking during part of a program at church this weekend, and suggestion #4 helped spark a idea my talk needed.
Yes, it's been very difficult to keep creating videos like this. My nights and weekends are filled with it. I'm glad the tips were helpful for your church program!
The four stages I'll normally use is Hook, Story, Step to Success, Call to Action. The speech and story needs to also resonate with the likely audience. People like to hear a path to breakthrough.
This was my opening at a recent speech. As I was walking to the stage I got them to play Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy..... "it was all a dream, I used to read word-up magazine" *music cuts ✂️* I start..... "it was all a dream to compete at the big stadiums in Bangkok at the start of my muay thai career"...... I got the audience early
This is a fantastic and complete list of different ways to start a speech. I'll definitely refer to this the next time I have a speech coming up. And now I understand the chess piece in your thumbnail!
You are the best communication Coach! Congrats for your channel it will hit 1 million subscribers very soon. Thank you for your help to improve my communication skills. God bless you Alex.
Alex, I really appreciate your curating these tips for Best Practices of Opening a Speech. Really concise. To you question about effective openings (and this may fall under #5 to Use Visuals) I have seen speakers be announced, then the stage goes dark and a short but powerful video package is shown that relates to the topic. With the video, the full stereo sound and the darkening of the stage, this can be a very effective opening that you probably have seen. Thank you again for your great content.
Yes, I've seen professional-level keynote speakers have an introduction like that. That's usually a great way to kick things off. I've seen some amazing ones. But I don't consider that part of the speech really. That's an audio-visual introduction. If it's not coming out of the speakers, then it's not something I can teach. On an everyday basis, most people who speak in workplace settings are typically just introduced by whoever invited them to be the speaker that day.
I'm not supportive of using much video at all in presentations, especially to open. My reason is simple, showing a video is not public speaking. Professional speakers essentially never open with a video. I don't recommend it.
Hi Alex, thank you for all these beautiful videos.. i want to ask you to do some videos about conflicts management, communication with the angry and frustrated persons or arrogant persons.. thank you too much.. God bless.. i waiting for your videos.. 😊
Thank you for your kind words. I have some videos planned for conflict management but I don't think I'll be creating those soon. It may be in a few months or more.
Thanks Alex! These tips are so helpful, I also identified some of the mistakes I made while opening a speech in the past. I'm sure gonna implement them in my next speeching engagement.
Hi Sir, thanks for the good work. Kindly, what tip are you likely to start with as an opening speach in a academic research proposal defence for "Influence of money lending platforms on economic security of motorbike riders "?
Thanks for these tips. If one is making a very short pitch of only 3 mins (for eg in a startup pitch by students), wld there be enough time to incorporate stories?
I advise against that. I have a video on *_How to Give an Extemporaneous Speech_* that explains how to prepare notes and speak from limited notes. If you search for that title and my name, you'll see it pop up in the search results.

Your website is way too busy. Way too many things popping up. Especially the ”cookie” pop up. The screen is constantly jumping around. It’s hard to focus on any one click.
For someone who claims to be a communication expert, his thumbnail is confusing. If the talk is about opening, he should realise that the King in a chess board can’t participate in any opening moves!

Begin with a powerful quote relevant to your topic to immediately grab attention and set the tone.
Thanks for these tips. If one is making a very short pitch of only 3 mins (for eg in a startup pitch by students), wld there be enough time to incorporate stories?
If it's a 30-second story, yes. But that is a challenge and takes practice.

Nope. My website literally has zero popups and we don't track cookies. And nothing moves on the screen. It's all just text and stable images.
