Ever been in a crowd and witnessed someone on stage start to fall apart from nerves? Remember how awkward it was, how bad you wanted it to stop and how much you wanted them to regain composure? Whenever I'm about to speak I just remind myself that everyone in the crowd is quietly cheering for me and is on my team. This really helps me. Hopefully it helps someone else.
This sounds like positive toxicity to me. This is clearly not true. Most people aren't cheering for u, except maybe ur friends and those that also struggle to speak in public.
My problem during public speech or even in a meeting is that I talk too fast, and the worse part is that my mind stops thinking much and I often repeat the same thing over and over again in very plain language as my vocabulary fails since the mind isnt thinking much. It's all due to nervousness. I dont look nervous but my low quality speech gives it away. Worse, people think my knowledge about the subject is shallow based on that speech. Later, my head is filled with remorse over 100 different ways I could have communicated my thoughts better and all the arguments I could have given. However, everytime I speak, the language and vocabulary gets very banal, repetitive and boring.
I felt this to the core. I used to be fluent and enjoy speaking publicly to anyone, but I’ve become so disgusted by people’s social etiquette that I choose not to hold much conversation with people out and about; crazy how so many people lack self awareness.
even as i watch this video, my heat beats faster, knowing that one time i will speak in front of people, i would do anything to get rid of this anxiety
Great points...years back I had what was in my mind a total melt down. When I sat down, the lady next to me said, "great job".....I asked her if I seemed nervous and she said, "not at all".....ever since then I always remind myself of this story and plow through the nervousness that inevitably will happen.
I can' believe how much a 7 minute video helped me. I watched this a week ago prior to a big presentation, honestly not having much faith it would help. I can't believe how much it did! "Nervousness does not get in the way of giving a great presentation" changed my life. I walked away from my presentation thinking I could definitely feel a shift and that I built trust in myself, instead of thinking PHEW I faked it til next time.
Thank you for letting me know. I appreciate that you took the time to post your feedback. And congratulations. It sounds like you've turned a corner. Onward!
For me, whenever i hear about an upcoming presentation, I feel my heart sink. I can't stop thinking about it and I feel sick to my stomach. My younger self would be so disappointed in me. I used to be so outgoing and I've never had this anxiety until around a few months ago. I liked being the center of attention. I used to love to read in front of the class and be a social butterfly but now as a junior in high school, I absolutely hate it. I tremble and shake like crazy but I had a biology presentation last year and I studied for that thing front and back. I did actually pretty well but I was also chewing gum which helped my nerves a lot.
I would say a big one for me is preparation. Giving your speech in front of a family member or the mirror to solidify the message in your mind is one of the single best things I do before an event that really provides me the confidence to push through the nerves and successfully get my message across.
Totally agree. I did toastmasters and realized that practicing my speech gets me through that first 30 seconds and then I’m fine. It not about being nervous, it about dealing with it.
Hi you can do it! I feel horrible in advance of a public speech, I just want to run away and rather fight a tiger than speak… I had at some point quite the fear for presentations as I had the tendency to forget to breath and then I basically would rattle on. But it was the actual fear of this happening that enforced it to happen. I found if I prepare well with note cards I would be fine after 30 seconds and although I am still super nervous my colleagues think I am super confident and have no fear when presenting a training or speaking at a town hall. I overcame some of my blocking fears by looking at the highest managers of our company and how they prepare. And guess what, many of them deliver dreadfully boring messages in dreadful ways but they only care half as much about what people say about them then I do. Once I realized I am more funny and concise and can trust my body to project confidence for the 30 seconds I want to run away it became much easier. But guess what, you are allowed to repeat words or say: I am not sure I worded that correctly, so let me rephrase. It is so hard to change the mindset when you are afraid but you can do it, you will just have to build your own routine which gives you a minimum peace of mind.
Thank you. I think Knowing that anxiety and nervousness won't stop me from doing a good job and getting my points across is the most helpful idea for me. It also me to realize that it's not about me. It's about getting the information to the audience and helping them understand
I have a speech coming up and I was chosen to speak infront of 200 pupils, im praying these tips will help! I'll edit this comment after the speech🙂 Edit: it helped me alot! It wasn't as bad as I thought, and now I'm more confident in speaking infront of a small audience !!
Thank you for these tips! I wish I had heard this years ago! My first experience with public speaking traumatized me. I was in 6th grade trying out for a Shakespeare play. I had my part down pact. I was so excited to try out!!! However, when I stood up and faced the class, the butterflies hit so hard that all I could do was giggle. I had never experienced anything like it. I didn’t even know I was afraid! my teacher, told me that I had a fear of public speaking. I’ve held onto that belief for 30 years! It never occurred to me that any of those butterflies were caused by excitement. I’ve avoided public speaking like the plague my entire life. Maybe just maybe there isn’t something wrong with me, and someday I may be able to speak in public.
I just did a Father of the Bride speech. Six weeks ago my anxiety was at full throttle! However , once I'd written the speech , practiced delivering the speech, many many times , it all went very well. For me the key thing was pausing to breathe properly. Once you virtually know all the words, make sure you know when to pause and take breath. It slows you down and calms the nerves like nothing else! Good luck to anybody that has a public speak coming up, it is daunting but will be very exciting. Great vid !!
Assume that everybody is rooting for you is the one that stuck with me. I'm a very positive person but when going into certain conversations, mostly when I need to get an important idea across or things that I NEED to happen I get nervous about the other person. Thx for the tips. I am definitely gonna think about that one next time.
I don't want this to be awkward, but when you said "Those butterflies are proof that you're alive, and about to do something special" it legitimately brought a tear to my eye. Thank you.
I just started getting into voice over work for a youtube channel im starting. It's funny that even in my own room with no one around, I still get nervous before I start recording. It took me a while to figure out how to breathe while speaking. I'm on week 2 of this and still yesterday I was nervous while recording. I think you are correct, though. I think a big part of it is excitement. These tips are helpful, thank you!
You can do it! You're mostly just amped up about it. I get the same way when I record with just me in the room. What you're doing is exciting and meaningful and _should_ feel that way to some extent.
I'm not very savvy, so I'm just curious what does voice over work entail? I mean what is it that you do, specifically. I'm thinking about maybe recording some stories one day. :)
@@Missramy100 I wrote a script for a video I'm making, recorded myself reading that script and then edited the audio in Ableton. Then I add it into the video and blend it all together. It's fun!
I rewatched this video again tonight. That spike of nervousness does come back down. I noticed this today during an initial screening call from a recruiter. I tried to remain calm and it went fine 🙂
I am a recruiter Brian and even I get nervous speaking to candidate's!! We are both just humans at the end of the day having a chat is what I tell myself. I hope the screening call went well for you!
Point 4 Point 5 is so true! Sometimes things can go badly if we are not nervous beforehand. Nervousness can give us the motivation to prepare ahead of time.
I have found that it is helpful to really look out and connect with people when I speak in public. I like to look around the room, catch people's eye, and really remember that I'm speaking, communicating to other humans. I'm not a robot LOL, and neither are they! It brings a more human experience to speaking in public.

Thank you for this. What resonated the most with me was the fact that anxiety and excitement are basically the same kind of energy/emotion , just viewed in different ways . So once you change your definition of what anxiety is and the way you look at it ,then it becomes a powerful tool for your own evolution !
My favourite, u don't look nervous as you feel. Its true many a times happened to me. After my spech , when i check with fellow people , they say you are good. But i thought may be i am screwing up while delivering speech
All true things. Once you get going it’s usually all good and knowing this makes it more easy to pass. Also, I like to imagine how I feel when I listen to someone else speak and realize that nobody is there to put pressure on you. As im typing this, this is being explained in the video.
Hi, I have to present in a couple of weeks, and I am terrified. Public speaking has always been the hardest thing for me. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video, because you’ve given me something I can latch onto and reread repeatedly between now and when I have to speak, and I think that what you have shared will hopefully give me the strength to present without shaking uncontrollably, which I am prone to do, and crumbling into a complete mess. I keep telling myself that it will be over before I know it.
Agreed! Practice, practice, practice! Another tip I do while I practice, is to do it in front of a full length mirror then I can see how I look! Or you could do a video recording of yourself! People don't see you thru their eyes, they see you thru your eyes!
I was a factory rep for 20 years with a big company and 20 with my own company, one key thing that will help you a lot is preparation. By that I mean have written down your key points let's say six and then some little sub points below that and kind of time yourself in practice move from one to the other smoothly and then the final thing should be the wrap up and ask if there's any questions but I wouldn't ask for questions till the end so you can get this stuff in their head, it works better that way some people may not prefer that but I like trying to get the information in their head now if it's a real casual meeting let's say 10 people in a room 15 maybe then you can relax and give them a little time for questions but remember your total time should not be more than 30 minutes you can always do it again, but after 30 minutes their brain power starts to drop and their interest stops to drop, so you can do a lot in that time maybe you only should cover one or two subjects rather than five or six but practice it do some timing and move from one point to the other and if it's a big audience don't ask for questions till the last and then restrict the questions. The main thing to sum up things always ask does everyone understand what I'm talking about here and do you have any major questions or do you have any questions and then answer those questions but keep that. Kind of short too remember 30 to 45 minutes is about it.
Something I need to work on is rambling towards the end of something like an interview question or prayer. I feel like I get more nervous towards the end as if I’m looking for more content and sometimes overreaching. I’ve heard of the tip: speak like how you write. Speak briefly about a header, body, and conclusion. Each being about a sentence. Easier said than done.
Thank you for your videos. I’m looking forward to going through more of them as someone who has had a stutter their whole lives, this is refreshing and nice to hear!
Great tips! I definitely have a huge take away from this video. I've found myself to struggle with nerves before speaking in front of a large or unfamiliar audience. Fear of the unknown/uncertainty plays a role and it would certainly help to imagine that your audience is there to listen to and support you.
One thing I learned in a book called Subliminal, it might help someone else as well, is that we have physical changes in our body before we ever feel the emotion There was an experiment done on this, however, the gist of it was that when your body is physically aroused in some way, in whatever situation, the way you label how your body is experiencing it in the moment, is how your mind will create that link to an emotion
Thank you so much for sharing these great tips! I resonate with #6 for sure! I recently was asked to speak about my tea products in front of a group of panelists and attendees. And I felt so supported because just before I provided them with samples of my tea; they absolutely loved it from the taste to the benefits. That gave me a great deal of ease and reassurance to speak confidently without nerves.
Stronghold vocabulary of a language , experience faced by us in public speaking , will also play important role in reducing anxiety . Really this video is excellent .
Thank you very much, a great list! *Stillness* cultivates the mind to receive. In stillness you find that things are known already that you have neglected thus far. From these practice periods your mind will become more refined and have greater depth, *greater concentration and a greater focus in all aspects of your life.* From: Steps to Knowledge - The Book of Inner Knowing, Step 184 by *Marshall Vian Summers*
Super helpful. Love the idea that anxiety is normal and not a performance factor. My question is how do I reduce anxiety for the whole hour before? Nauseating sometimes
Have you had any improvements?? Wht helped me is having a good meal before but no caffeine or sugar/ energy drinks. Water and also practice before with a friend or family member
ive heard that i dont appear that anxious when im public speaking and im like WHAT? i actually had thoughts of running out of the building right after starting the speech
This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my TH-cam channel 7 months ago about self development. Now I have 754 subs and > 200 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
@alexanderlyon Whoever you are, I don't know you personally but I can say based on your posts and profile, you're one of the non-judgmental and open-minded people who is not fixated on tangible or external factors in order to learn from someone like me. Just because someone doesn't have a piece of paper as a credential, doesn't mean that person is not entitled to share personal experiences with the hope & intention to inspire others. Keep up with whatever it is that you're doing to improve mankind or improving your life even to a slight degree each day. This is just one part of a bigger puzzle for creating my TH-cam channel about holistic health. I literally could have died back when I was 14 years old due to major depression but here I am right now replying to you, a TH-camr, who's full of fulfillment and dedication to help others to be a better version of themselves. I ain't better than anyone else but my old self. That's all that really makes this TH-cam thing more meaningful and enjoyable. Thanks so much for your support! I am hoping that you can join me with this endless personal development journey! :)
For me the peak of anxiety is right before speaking and before ending as I don't know how it went. In between its a wave pattern up and down. It shows when thought anxiety I lack air and have difficulty saying words. If I close my eyes everything is better but facing people is stressful. That's why I don't like eye contact more than a few seconds. Deep breathing doesn't help. It a wide spread false belief. Even if I breath deeply and try to relax before standing up a strong tension builds the chest and lungs.
I watched a lot of TH-cam videos about public speaking and went for a meeting today with all the tips in my mind. And my turn came and I absolutely froze and became numb, and could not speak more than one line. I had to request my colleague to take over. I'm shattered at how bad I'm at this, that too in front of people whom I've been working with for years. I don't think I can ever do this again and I'm gonna take some medical help
You got this! This kinda happened to me In my first presentation for my sociology class, I had to do 3-4 more presentations, I practiced them several times with my brother days before and I also pretended I was talking to him when presenting. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Don’t do too much and start off small! God bless
Whenever I walk up on stage to give a presentation, it feels like I stutter a bit, and give a terrible explanation. I usually like talking to people and do it naturally, but something prevents me from reaching my full potential when I'm speaking in public. I am going to practice and hopefully, your tips could help.
I wish I had had a public speaking teacher like you in college. I had kind of an uninspiring old woman who didn't light any kind of fire in me to continue practicing public speaking after I finished the class.
Yes. Very true. I have found that many nervous speakers focus quite a bit on on the idea that people are set out to judge them negatively. I have found it's just the opposite. Almost everybody is really pulling for the speaker and will do their best to cooperate and be supportive.
I got up and literally just started uncontrollably crying in front of everyone in the class and couldn't stop..... I would say people would agree I looked exactly how nervous and anxious I was....and this was in front of a class of people I liked. How do you solve a case this sever exactly???
I can relate to the first 30 seconds at the beginning of a presentation. During those 30 seconds , my voice quivers - any tips on how I can control this? after 30 seconds or so I’m fine.
Very insightful, useful and practical tips... great video! I think that opening a speech or presentation with point 4, the spike of nervousness - would be a great way to overcome those first 60 seconds of nerves, as well as provide an engaging and helpful tip to pass onto the audience and then roll into it. "Good morning everyone and thanks for being here... well, I'm nervous as sh!t right now!! and I have about 30 seconds of peak nervousness still to get through. Let me share with you what I mean. You see, the great what's
99% of Listeners are sympathetic, this line is the best for me, Once your listeners observed you are having trouble they show some signs of encouragement through actions or words
Its all about being able to present in the proper key. Just like a song, you need to sing it in the proper Key that is unique to that song. It has to be different from the verbal frequency you speak on a day to day basis. I.e., when you talk little children, you soften your voice to change the frequency. Nervousness comes from not knowing the proper frequency for that speech.

Yes, exactly. Listeners really are cheering us on when we speak.
Unless you are following them as 2nd speaker, you don't want them to do that extraordinarily well. 😂😂
Been there. I was actually presenting my side of the arguements being a law student at my uni and as you can imagine I lost big time lol

The 50% nervous and 50% excitement really hit it on the nail for me, I’ve never really thought about it that way until you said that👍

Yup! It's not about squashing the butterflies, but getting them to fly in formation.

They’re helping me every week. Thank you for all the help!
You are so welcome, Ryan. God bless, brother.
My favourite, u don't look nervous as you feel. Its true many a times happened to me. After my spech , when i check with fellow people , they say you are good. But i thought may be i am screwing up while delivering speech
This video popped up the same day I am to give a presentation at the university. I am amazed how much my nerves calmed down after watching this video
One of the better videos on TH-cam about this topic! Well done!!
Thanks!
How did it go?
Agreed! Practice, practice, practice! Another tip I do while I practice, is to do it in front of a full length mirror then I can see how I look! Or you could do a video recording of yourself! People don't see you thru their eyes, they see you thru your eyes!
i think it's true that anxiety spikes in the first 60 seconds, sometimes i get too nervous but in the next minute i'm getting calmer
Yes, Biancha. That's really common.
I love the way you speak, it's amazing.
Wow, thank you, Jessica. I appreciate that.
Glad it was helpful!
Your vibe is really great. I appreciate the authenticity and helpfulness. Thank you.
One thing I learned in a book called Subliminal, it might help someone else as well, is that we have physical changes in our body before we ever feel the emotion
There was an experiment done on this, however, the gist of it was that when your body is physically aroused in some way, in whatever situation, the way you label how your body is experiencing it in the moment, is how your mind will create that link to an emotion
From these practice periods your mind will become more refined and have greater depth,
*greater concentration and a greater focus in all aspects of your life.*

Tip number two!!! Stay blessed out there 🎉
I would say #5 because embracing this is a key to growth (in my personal opinion)
ive heard that i dont appear that anxious when im public speaking and im like WHAT? i actually had thoughts of running out of the building right after starting the speech
Way to go! It's going to be a journey but it'll be worth it.
wow I needed this video so badly, Thank you, thank you, thank you. ❤
Thank you very much 🤝 this is what I have always wanted to hear, surely it will have positive impact on me.
Good stuff!! I love the tip about "others' don't see how nervous you are." Thank you for the info! 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome piece on anxiety. I used to say, "Nervousness is giving a damn about your subject matter unless you are all ego and that's on you." LOL!
God bless
I'm really encouraged and I wasn't even looking for public speaking tips thank you!
Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and giving out free resources. I'm sure you're going to reach and teach millions! You're awesome
Wow, thank you!
Nervousness is a sense of excitement as well as starting something important. we all get nervous.
thank you so much, i’m doing my english gsce language speech in a few hours and i’m prepared, but terrified! thank you ❤
When I am on the stage in front of the crowd, I tend to forget what I have to speak and I stumble on my words. Which is very embarassing.
6th point will help us in making us progress
Whenever I walk up on stage to give a presentation, it feels like I stutter a bit, and give a terrible explanation. I usually like talking to people and do it naturally, but something prevents me from reaching my full potential when I'm speaking in public. I am going to practice and hopefully, your tips could help.
I wish I had had a public speaking teacher like you in college. I had kind of an uninspiring old woman who didn't light any kind of fire in me to continue practicing public speaking after I finished the class.
I think so considering everybody is rooting for me will help for me.
Yes. Very true. I have found that many nervous speakers focus quite a bit on on the idea that people are set out to judge them negatively. I have found it's just the opposite. Almost everybody is really pulling for the speaker and will do their best to cooperate and be supportive.
Nervousness is not a barrier to doing a good job.❤🎉
Learning about the spotlight effect helps.
I got up and literally just started uncontrollably crying in front of everyone in the class and couldn't stop..... I would say people would agree I looked exactly how nervous and anxious I was....and this was in front of a class of people I liked.
How do you solve a case this sever exactly???
"Believe that everyone is rooting for you" 💪
The last tip, I am sure that it will help me a looot.
Thank you for your Tips! I will take your advice and think about them as I go through my life of public speaking.
Assume ! Everybody is rooting for you! l love this tips thanks! greetings from Santiago Chile 🇨🇱👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💫💫💫🌿🌿🌿
Thanks very much! Outstanding video!!
It helps a lot…
Thank you sir
Great Alex . Thank you
I can relate to the first 30 seconds at the beginning of a presentation.
My nervousness does NOT go away after 60 seconds it just get worst and worst by the end I'm trembling and shaking out of my body.
All the tips were great. Thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks mate 👍
Even your speaking rhythm is relaxing
I have a speech in church tomorrow morning. Is 1:46 am and I’m still practicing and very nervous. Extremely
I hope it goes well!
Totally agree ♡ Thank you so much ♡
I have to do a Eulogy today and I am trying to stay in a positive mindset
I wish you the best with it.
Thank you. This was awesome
My problem is I do appear as nervous as I feel. If I could mask it better it would be better. But people often tell me I look really nervous.
So me
This is so helpful. Thank you so much 😊❤
Glad it was helpful.
Wow... One of the solution for anxiety ❤
The fifth point helped me push through my speeches although I'm very young. Thanks for mentioning this this point!(The other points were great too)
Thankyou!☺
Enx for the good tips ,it helps us a lot big up🤝👏
Thank you for the good tips, l think if I prepare for public speaking the good tip that will help me when l see the audience happy
You are one of my fav professor.
Do you think meditation can help in that situation? I don't know why I can't meditate more than 40 seconds.
It might help. I don't know of any data on it for public speaking but it seems to help people with anxiety.
One that's really helps me is assuming that everybody is on my side and they're
supporting me
They are all hoping you do well. No doubt.
