Okay, so, the shadow determines where the boss's tail will be when the next attack is executed. If it's a 'rear' attack, you need to be on the opposite side of the shadow, if it's a 'forward' attack, be on the same side as the shadow. With regards to the 2 shadow phase of the fight, one shadow will spawn first, then the second, and you move accordingly for each attack, depending on whether or not you're safe (though I'd advise staying near the centre of the arena to make this easier). It's fairly wordy to describe, but not too difficult to understand. The fight itself relies a lot on observing how the shadows behave, and adjusting as such.

@@jacks1368 True but it also makes it so the MT doesn't need an Invul to survive the onslaught. Did a couple runs yesterday where I passed TBN to the MT and they pretty much ate it like a thousand caterpillars on a Tomato farm.
@@jhalilxvii Cover also does that though? It basically does the same thing as tankswapping, you take the damage and the debuffs from the first four hits instead of the MT, so the MT only has to eat the last hit without any debuffs. They hardly need a cooldown for that.
Typically these guides are really good, but the forward/back & right/left explosions were not explained well. To help, when he is doing the shadow versions he will cast a shadow. Then right before the cast goes off, He Will Turn Away From His Shadow!

felt bad i didnt tank swap... im a new tank so i did my raid rouls and got this and i remember there being something about tank swap but i didnt know when to do this or if it really was "necessary" and i would just confuse the MT but in my defense, mt was a paladin and he couldve just invulned but didnt and instead resorted to clemency lmao next time ill definitely initiate a tank swap if im the ot

Some people complain that she rushes these guides just to have them out and gain views. And sometimes that's true, her guides tend to be rather superficial and leave out important mechs, or worse, advertise strats that are inferior to other strats. It's not always the case, but sometimes, and that's why people downvote her videos.

It took me a long, long time to wrap my head around the shadow mechanic, and not just me. Except for me, one healer, and the MT, I think everyone died at least twice! Somehow, though, 0 wipes. Go figure.
I despise this boss and I think its the first boss in the game I litterally cant stand because they put black on black colors Its very difficult to see what way anything is faceing because its all one black blob in the middle with player effects on top of that. It wouldve made way more sense to have it be black and purple or black and blue. This bosses mechanics are not even that hard what makes it annoying is whether or not you can see the dirrection the boss faces which most of the time you cannot.
While i definitely appreciate the work MTQ puts into her videos, and am grateful for the information, does anyone else feel like they are a little rushed? Im barely comprehending one set of mechanics described before she moves on to the next one, all in quick succession.

Man, I'm so dumb. I was trying to learn the encounter but I couldn't figure out which way the attacks were coming out. Never once did I read the name of the spells. Course, I haven't had to do that since Stormblood so..
I don't understand how the shadow is difficult. The floor portion of the shadow literally looks like a pointer - it points in the direction the shadow is facing....
Eventually they will struggle with mechanic creation. Easily remedied by getting rid of the small arenas and making small areas instead with more mechanics and adds. WoW does it better in terms of the raid encounter area.

It really amazes me their ability to come up with new boss mechanics. Or at the very least, tweak it enough to feel new and different.
A bit of advice for avoiding the shadows: imagine them as the boss facing the center of the arena

To help with positioning, think of the shadow as the tail of the boss (always rear)

See I get that but sometimes it'll cast two front/behind attacks and I dont know what to position first? The shadow or the boss?

Another way to handle Unbra Smash, with a PLD offtank, is to Cover the main tank during the first four hits so you take the slash debuff instead.
If you're a DRK you can pass the MT TBN
