  • Had clutch problems again. Change the clutch master cylinder, that's the only thing left. Now the whole system is new.

    Thank you for doing this informative video. My 08 slowly quit allowing my shifting going home....once home I turned the engine off....pushed the clutch in to start....and it forced the jeep to roll with just the starter....this video gave me the confidence to tackle this job.

    Great Video, I just got my 2004 wrangler about 6 weeks ago and now it's getting hard to get it into gear. I thought at first the Tranny was going bad, but now after checking out things online I'm finding out that it's more then likely the clutch assembly and your video is a great starting point.

      Glad you like the video and hope the issue turns out to be a simple fix. Luckily yours should have the external slave cylinder. Sooo much easier to work with than my internal. Check the fluid and bleed the clutch master/slave cylinder assembly. After a couple of sessions of burping the air out, check the fluid reservoir to top it off. It doesn't take much to end up injecting air back into the lines and having to start all over again. Congrats on the Jeep! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Have a great day!!

    i think this might help my problem i have an 03 wrangler. i was taking my wife to work when i noticed my clutch went to floor.. managed to get us there safely got out an noticed i had fluid on my floor board i hope my problem is similar lol great vid it was so informational in this time for me thank you

      @@Poweraddicts that is cool, the xj i am building started life as a Gallatin tn maintenance vehicle until someone busted out all of the windows, so they sold it off. now its almost new again. 35" tires, long arms, trussed d30, ford 8.8, lockers front&rear, 4.88 gears, raptor bed lined inside and out....
      you by any small chance know anyone that used to drive a 98 xj for the town of gallatin's maintenance department ?

    Great video. I downloaded the FSM and you are correct: it does say to seat the pilot bearing with the alignment tool. I thought you should use the old pilot bearing to seat it. After watching your video I will tackle mine.

    How about a video on the replacement on the slave cylinder.... Mines all rusted I can't bleed the system... Better yet can you do a external slave swap with a 94 bell housing... internal slave cylinder has to many problems... thank you in advance

    Watch a lot of your videos and have learned a lot in a short time. I am experiencing a stuck clutch pedal occasionally that feels like the pedal is solid (no movement) and it always clears up and everything is fine till it happens again. Can go for days with no problem. Does that sound like the clutch master cylinder?

      It could be either the master cylinder or slave cylinder. When possible they should be replaced together. Have a great day!!

      I'm not sure how to answer that? Are you meaning pedal movement before it rests on the master cylinder pressure?

    Hey Chuck: Love your helpful videos. I have a 90 YJ and of course it is always needing some kind if attention. Cant afford to take it to a mechanic. Latest issue: My manual shift YJ sometimes chatters when taking off in first gear. Not always.? Clutch pedal seems to grip strong, and other gears work perfectly. Could the master cylinder cause this? or is it probably the clutch that may need replacing? YJ only has 88000 miles on it. THANKS!

    Thanks again brother. This is the third project you helped me through. That roll pin is a bitch. I used a sawzall blade with electric tape on the bottom to hand cut a notch on both sides and it slid right out

    Hey Chuck! I've been watching your videos for a while now and I want to say thanks! I did the same exact install on my 93 YJ, but while I was bleeding the clutch the valve broke at the end. Any suggestions? Do I have to replace the entire slave cylinder in this instance?

    Great video Chuck! I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 and on my way to the grocery store today I all the sudden lost the ability to shift gears and clutch went all the way down to floorboard and so pulled off in to a nearby neighborhood's pool center parking lot and parked it. I had my mechanic replace the clutch a year ago and am not sure if it could be this master cylinder or not that could be the problem. I am by no means a mechanic although, trying to figure it out myself if I can. The pedal is loose.....no hydraulic pressure at all...could the pin on the pedal have just slipped out or something? Any thoughts? Pleas help. Thanks.!

      Although not likely, there is a possibility that the pin/clip came loose from the pedal. All you have to do is look under the dash, move the pedal to see if it's still attached to the master cylinder push rod. If so, then check the fluid next. If there is no fluid or very low, add some and pump the pedal. If you get some "pedal" you may just need to add fluid and bleed the clutch. If you still have no pedal. Change out the master cylinder then bleed it well. If that doesn't fix the issue, change the slave cylinder out nest. Yours being a '96, it should be an external slave cylinder. If so this could make the repair process much easier. Thanks for asking. Hope this helps! Good luck and have a great day!

    What kind of fluid did you use? Brake fluid? Hydraulic fluid? Synthetic? I didn’t hear you mention what type is used in the clutch cylinder

    I did this a while back with a mechanic because my jeep would go into gear, but when I tried going back to neutral, it would stay on the first gear. I need to turn off the jeep because It won't go to back neutral. Same thing with reverse. If I don't turn it off, I would need to force it back into neutral with all my strength. What do you think the problem is? Thanks man love the videos..

      +Jose Villa Sound like the clutch isn't disengaging. Do the slave cylinder next. Some older Jeeps have internal slave cylinders / throw out bearing. If your does, changed the clutch kit while you are at it. If changing the slave doesn't do it, change the whole clutch kit. Pressure plate could have some internal damage not allowing it to disengage properly. Thanks, glad you like the vids! Have a great day!

    great video man! i wantef to ask you for some advice, my bleeder screw is stripped so i cannot bleed my system, how would you go about fixing that? much appreciated man

      Glad you like the video! Depending on whether you have the internal or external slave cylinder, it may save you some headache to just change the slave. If you have the internal, get a new pair of small vice grips that have good sharp teeth. Clamp them on and hope for the best. If that doesn't work, You will have to change the slave cylinder.     Can you please tell me where you purchased the master clutch cylinder you are using. I have the exact same one it even says Lucas usa on it like yours. However the ones I buy at auto zone and orileys do not fit min 88 jeep. All of the master clutch cylinders they have have a threaded housing where the fluid line fits into. I need one with the pin as well. Lease help I'm in dyer need of your help thank you, Joseph.

      My '88 has a fitting on the hydraulic line that screws into the master cylinder. It has the internal slave cylinder that doubles as a throwout bearing.

      I ran out to the shop and checked the part number on the box. It's CM1301 from Oreilly Autoparts. According to what I found, that Clutch MC starts in 1991. Someone may have changed out your Master/Slave cylinder system or possibly the whole trans. Swapping parts around different years on Jeeps is very common. Hope that help you out brotha!     Hi, I'm having an issue with my '99 TJ. when I push down the clutch, I'm getting this weird creaking noise, maybe the push rod is just old and squeaky? I'm not sure, any input would help thanks!

      Mike Murphy Follow the clutch pedal up into the dash. Find where it pivots. Get some white lithium grease (most any autoparts store has it) and lube that pivot point and where the pushrod connects to the pedal. If that doesn't stop it its in the brake booster. If its the booster, you got 2 choices .. live with the noise .. or ... change it. Hope that helps narrow down the squeak. Thanks for dropping by and have a great day!!

    My stock master didn't have a roll pin in it and I tried to pull of the line with channel locks and wouldn't budge! How in the crap do I get it off. It's that square cap on the end of the line just like yours with no pin so I have no idea why it won't come out

      Push a small nail through the hole. Possible that its has a shorter pin installed and you cant see the ends? If thats not the issue, then its stuck for some reason. As soon as that pin is removed, that line should slide right off.

    Ok so I got that part but the length of the metal arm that connects to the clutch is shorter than the one I have. No the jeep is running like crap, can't get it into gear and when I do it's starts to rumble like it's in gear when I have my foot on the clutch at a stop. I bought this 88 Jeep Wrangler YJ from a previous owner. How would I find out what size transmission I have that way I can see what year it is so I can buy the correct slave cylinder and master cylinder for it. Is there a serial number or identification number on it? I crawled under the vehicle for about an hour with no luck. If you're able to help Id really appreciate it. Thank you!

      I haven't dealt much with the older YJ's. Mine and my sisters are '91s. My dad and friend of mine are both TJ's.

    Hello, I have an issue with the reverse on a 06 jeep wrangler with a manual trans. All forward shifts are good but when I need to shift into reverse, it grinds and had to be forced in. What can I do to fix this issue?

      +Hec Ruiz First thing is check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder. Sometimes low fluid will limit slave cylinder travel. Reverse is usually the first one effected. If fluid is good, bleed the system. Still grinding .. well then you may want to look into a new master / Slave cylinder system. Luckily yours is way easier to change then mine. Hope that helps.       Nope, sure didn't. The clutch master cylinder has such a small reservoir and pump, Its no bog deal just to bleed it after installing. Thanks for dropping by.

    the plunger on my jeep wrangler 92 to engage the clutch on the pedal keeps falling off, do i need to replace the master cylinder to fix this or what do i need to replace?

      There is a hair pin clip that holds the push rod onto the pedal. If that clip is missing, the rod will fall off.

    the one I bought at advance didnt have a hole for a pin lock. it had a connection that the line would screw into. everywhere i have checked is even like that. i was gonna send a pic of it, but can't on here.

      I double checked for ya. Mine is a 1991, that is the first year of the roll pin. Previous years had the screw in filling like yours. Change out procedure will be pretty much the same way. Except you will have to screw that fitting in instead of the pressing the roll pin. Hope that helps you out :-) Good Luck and have a great day!

      It may be a bit of a bear to get too, you will have to hold the line and spin the master cylinder to screw in the fitting. Obviously dont try to rotate the pressure line, or it will kink up. When you screw that fitting in, make sure its tightly snug, but not over tightened to prevent stripping the threads.

    so heres my problem i hope you can help.
    when i turn on my car and need to put it in reverse it grinds a little i have to put it into 1st and then into reverse so it doesnt grind. then when i reverse it and need to take it out of reverse it gets stuck in reverse (alot of the times but not always) i need to turn off the car depress the clutch and take it out of gear turn it back on and put it into 1st but sometimes it gets stuck in 1st too. while im driving i have no problems just that 1st and 2nd gear what could it be?

      First thing .. check your fluid level. If its good, bleed the system. If is still does it .. time to start changing the master / slave cylinder.

    I have a 1998 jeep w tj I replace the master and the the piston on the train and the clutch its hard but i cant ingage any gear but I turn off the jeep and I jift smooth cant you tel me was the problem

      MrJoey32370 The pressure late isn't disengaging. As long as the internals of the trans are spinning (clutch engaged) going through gears is very difficult. Turning off the engine stops the trans parts from spinning, therefore making it easy to go through the gears. If you are sure that all parts are installed correctly and they should be because on the TJ's it MUCH easier than my YJ. Have someone help you bleed the clutch/master cylinder assembly again. Every 2 times you crack the bleeder to let fluid out, check/top off the master cylinder. If any air gets reintroduced into the system you have to start over. Air compresses, fluid doesn't. So when there is excessive air in the system and it compresses, it doesn't open the pressure plate enough to disengage it. Therefore causing the issues you are experiencing. If you are sure that all the air is out, then rare that it is, either the new slave or master cylinder could be bad. Luckily for you, all your parts are on the outside. My slave cylinder is internal so I have to drop the trans to change mine if that happens.

    Where did you get your master cylinder from? Everywhere I've checked doesn't have the pin lock on it.

      If you keep finding that they are not coming with the pin (in which they should), the old pin MIGHT work. If not, over in the "Help" section I have seen a roll pin assortment pack for a few bucks. Pick which pin fits snug but not too tight. If the pin is too loose its subject to work its way out. Too tight may crack the plastic on the master cylinder. Hope this helps. Have a great day!

    my clutch was slipping horribly for 2 days and hasnt slipped since. my fluid in the master cylinder was pretty low and i refilled it on the first day of problems. Could air bubbles cause clutch slipping? Im wondering if it just worked out the bubbles.

      Air bubbles will cause issues like not disengaging. Bubbles will not cause slippage. If you have the internal slave cylinder/throwout bearing, it is possible it could be leaking and getting fluid in the clutch causing the slippage. ood luck with that. Have a great day!

      BRYAN ROWE I bled it all as one system. That master cylinder holds such little fluid that, in my opinion, would be time wasted to bench bleed it. Installing the master cylinder you have to bleed the whole system anyway. After a pedal pump or two, that tiny master cylinder has expelled any air it holds. Be sure to top off the fluid after each couple of bleeds. It takes very little to empty that little reservoir. If that happens, you gotta start all over. Hope this helps. Thanks for dropping by!
