You are right I have been going to the auction and being out bided because of TH-camr you see them with their camera and they are causing the prices to go up more then what the vehicle is worth forcing us to walk away and they have no idea that they are just cutting their own throuts and keeping people like us who do this for a living

It's called ghost bidders. Usually traced back to whatever company us benefiting from the vehicle getting maximum price. They work great against people that can't stand being beat on bidding, they get caught up and price doesn't matter.

Great breakdown. Sometimes when you see “Oregon” as the bidder it’s because they’re using Autobidmaster as the broker and doesn’t necessarily mean they’re located in Oregon. People will use Autobidmaster when they don’t have a business account setup with Copart and they can be located in anywhere.

Alex Fraser, I’m pretty mechanically inclined, and I’ve been watching Copart for a Bowrider boat to do a few things to, and get a good deal. Because I know for example that insurance is going to price a new engine at $9,000+ for parts and labor, when I could install a remanned for $2,000 to $3,000 total, thus saving some money on a boat. Anything to watch for when looking at a salvage boat?

As I said in another video, I made my first serious attempt at a Copart buy and failed. It was a salvage title Ford SUV with a value of $5700. So I took the 70% expected value compared to a clean title and got about $4200 value. Well I calculated $1600 for used parts and fees and me doing the work. The dam SUV sold close to $2500!!!! If I would have bought it and sold it at $4200 I would have made virtually nothing, as I would still have to pay $25 inspection and not sure how much for titling the vehicle! Basically working for free to make someone else happy.
Today was week two and there was little worth buying that wasn't heavily damaged or high miles. I'm going to watch a few more cycles but if it doesn't get any better I'm going to buy something fun for myself to get my $400 deposit back then find another part time job!!! Maybe Burger King...l
Very disappointed so far. I've spent much time and energy into arranging my garage for work, obtaining forms and paper work etc.

I knew about Copart but the $300 jetski video really got me looking. So far I haven't seen any skis come anywhere close to $300. I'm positive i'm not the only one who saw that video and signed up on Copart. The more you put stuff like that out there the more competition you are going to have. Most ski's i've tried to bid on ended up near what I could go buy one for that hadn't been on the bottom of a lake. It doesn't help much that I would have to use a broker to buy from Texas and that's where a big chunk of the jetski's are located. I've only seen one pop up here in Oklahoma and one in Arkansas.

Boats typically depreciate like rocks. That G23 goes for say 130K new. 6 years later examples in pristine condition are worth half that. There are a lot of used boats on the market, because so many people buy them and find they don't want to put up with the maintenance costs and they don't use it as much as they thought it would. This conspires to keep prices low. It doesn't make sense to pay a lot of money for a wrecked boat that will be expensive to fix when there are so many excellent examples of serviceable boats in great shape that go for a fraction of their original MSRP.

Its because of the internet. Too many guys are posting copart auctions on line. The idea behind an auction is bidding starts at a minimum and people start bidding each other up. Like fools, they try to outbid the other person. Essentually, raising the price of what was a somewhat resonable offer to what becomes a stupid price. I REFUSE to do online auctions any more. Even E- Bay is not worth it. The last time I won a bid. Someone upped my bid, then backed out. The seller informed me because of that I won at the last bid. Because he and I were the only two bidders, I informed the seller I would have gotten the item closer to the original opening bid. I informed the seller he could eather repost it or we could agree to a fair price before this asshat boosted the price. The seller agreed at a fair price and I was happy. People that bid up an item them refuse to pay should be flogged. I agree on what you are saying.
Do the math before bidding on something. Figure in repairs and fees. If you know you are way outside the realm of what that vehicle is worth. Dump it. I see people buying items on E- Bay that for a few dollars more, you can buy brand new with a warrenty. Anything like a damaged boat is a bad investment to start with. Boats are a dime a dozen and everyone is selling one.

    • @Hoggdoc1946

One of my biggest complaint as well, I have been saying the same thing for several years. These bidders and buyers are paying way too high I don't understand it, by the time these vehicles or boats are completely repaired you are so close to full retail not to mention the vehicle or boat probably holds a salvaged title, now you paid way too much for something you could have paid for with no damage and a clean title to save a few hundred dollars or break even plus all the headache and hassles of repairing it. Stupid! Very very frustrating I hear you. I guess too many people have too much money that they blow on these thrashed items. They can be fixed but you have to save a significant amount of money to make all the effort and work involved to bring it to where it once was prior to the damage, not to mention all the unknown damages not only structural but mechanical and all the electrical components, this boat not worth going over $20K in my opinion. If your in the industry of boat repair already and have an advantage with experience over others I can see going $30K but I would think $30K to your location after all fees etc. If these boats fetch between $75K-$80K you need this boat paid shipped repaired and ready for water for about $50-$55k to make all that work worth it and have a Salvaged title that stays with it for life making it less valuable maxing at maybe $60-$65K Branded

Keep in mind that you are paying for the item in the yard. You are not paying for the photography and detailed description. They photograph the item to give you a rough idea of what you are buying, not a detailed photographic and written analysis. Be more cautious with your bidding if you are unable to inspect it in person or hire someone to go there and inspect and photographed it for you.

yeah, with the rise on youtube copart videos too many newbs are thinking they can buy a car/boat cheap and flip it and score like the youtubers do. Driving up the price of everything foolishly. There's a guy flyingwheels who does videos of dealer only auctions and many of the cars being bought by dealers are being sold for RETAIL price so there's no margin for the dealer to make any money.
      Ridiculous.

This is very typical of auctions in general. There are always people that don't know what they are doing and over bid. Years ago I used to go to auctions where businesses were being liquidated and was always amazed at how stupid people were with their bids often exceeding retail new prices. You see the same sort of thing on eBay all the time.

I asked the Copart ladies at the Austin site about loading a boat, and they said there was a local company with a backhoe that would meet you at the site you help you load your boat. I wonder what that costs? Another couple grand?

I rebuilt the family 1963 runabout 14ft . Used motor, then a prts motor, new seats , etc, Not counting for my labor, I spent over $6000 .00 ! Many good clean well maintained used boats out there with anxious sellers. Bought a bowrider with 2 outboards, 2 new batts , 3 new tires,2 tops, galv trlr. and all the gear for $600.00! Save your money on the junk, buy one all running. Summer and life is too short to spend it working on your boat.

It's just like any auction company.. the best ones are new ones. Once they become popular the prices any rocket until it crashes or prices go low again. I've seen many almost all auction sites do this..

@thesilman99 your crazy if you think the government employees do 1 thing your saying they do.Give them the money for title transfer and that's it and all they care about.Ive owned everything from razors to boats to racecars and been stopped by every government official at one time or another and can tell you not once have they ever checked anything but the vin and title.Never have they checked serial or vin numbers on my motors, frames or anything else. They don't care unless you get busted in a sting or they have suspicions then they will dig deeper

      @codylapoint 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@thesilman99 Yes i rebuilt a gsxr 750 with a salvage title years ago in PA. In order to get a legal title i had to provide receipts and vin numbers for all parts not purchased new on the bike. It was inspected by the state twice in person, and once by a certified inspection mechanic. It would be very difficult to obtain a new title by rebuilding anything with stolen parts.

because its the insurance co. posing as bidders so they can get close to if not more from what they lost in the claim. i wouldnt be surprised if copart doesnt have their hand in the bidding process as well as the insurance co.

Everything is getting like this. Ebay used to be a place where every nobody listed their stuff at whatever they felt like they wanted at the time. Now (and for some years) Ebay has such a huge list of everything ever sold and it's all integrated and gives you the price to list at - in other words data is out there they are using to jack prices on everything. Go to so many stores prices aren't listed - that's happening a lot more - people grab it then don't even get a receipt, often you have to ask for one - so with electronic iphone pay android google pay, people don't pay attention to prices, they just snatch it and let the computers figure out the deductions.
So I think the trend you point out is widespread and across the entire society.

Same here in the United Kingdom. People say to me, why don't you move up to much better boats Mark to make more money? My argument is, why do that only to spend a lot more time and money to get something on which I will make less money than dealing at the budget end of the market?
If I buy a much bigger boat for lets say £10,000 and end up hanging onto it for 3 months to sell it for £12,000 not only does it take up a lot more selling space but in that same time frame I could buy 20+ smaller cheaper boats and turn them all over in 1 month and make 4 or 5 times more in profit at far less risk as I'm not putting all my eggs on one basket and I'm constantly building out my trade contacts by dealing in lower priced stock with a faster more profitable turnover.

The prices you placed are for a shop to do work on most items
If the guy was ordering materials to create the parts himself, directly from a manufacturer,he was looking to spend around average 42k,,,that's including the boat at 30k
And if the boat can sell for 76k
That's 30k profit and about 4-5 months of labor free if your doing it.

Just guessing but I suspect the flooded boats were picked up by a forklift and stacked up one on top of another thereby damaging the windshields and towers. They could be loaded in that fashion on a flatbed and transported to another destination. I don't know where the boats were when they were flooded. I suspect if you knew the location you could find a cheaper source for finding boats, however if the tops were not damaged, then the asking price for a flooded boat would most likely be higher, don'y u think????

Dude, I'm a dealer in Portland and been going to Copart since 1989.,when Clinton got elected and Oregon gave free healtcare in the 90's, Portland got flooded with Eastern Europeans and they all wind up at Copart. I watched cars I paid half of book start going for book and More! Totalled! Also Portland gives out county jail time for auto theft, do the math.
Anyway, I emailed you about your STI. And get ahold of me if you are looking for a wakeboard boat, My brother sells Malibu and Cobalt. 40-50 k i can get you new.

hmm Portland Oregon is where autobidmaster bids show up from. this does not mean the buyer is in Oregon. Texas requires a broker or dealer licence to bid on boats, so that could be the case. anyhow I would not pay so much for that hunk of junk. not all boats on copart are that bad. Picked up a lower end boat really cheap on copart and I am happy with it.

Your numbers are way retail!! I did the math along with you, but wholesale prices and was at $49,000-$52,000 WORST CASE. You could get electronics for $1,000, trailer for $1,000, tower for $3,000 to $4,000, so being $52,000 in a $70,000 boat is dead on. You can expect to pay 30% to 50% less for a salvage vehicle or boat, and that one is a high demand item that is about 30% less than retail. On rebuilds you can’t go buy everything in a day at retail. You have to shop for second hand parts to come in under budget.

Our marina just sold a 2014 G23 with only 240 hours for $51,000. The boat was in good shape except for having the bottom painted and some interior issues from being outside. The quote we got to fix the interior was $2,200 from one shop and $1,400 from another although a good detail would've been fine for most people.
