  • In this video, I will be ranking 11 various ports of the 1989 Capcom arcade classic - Strider. This ranges from home micro computers as well as consoles and portables. Note: I have not included the Sharp X68000 version as many people think this is an unfair comparison.

I have fond memories of playing the CPC version at my friend's house when I was young. It's a bit whiffy now, of course, but we didn't really know any better back then. I'm confused why it's 'unfair' to include the X68K but it's not unfair to include PS1 or PSP. If my own experiences with trying to emulate the X68K are anything to go by, I suspect you just couldn't be arsed messing around trying to play that version. I wouldn't blame you ;)

Unfortunately, the Turbografx-CD port suffers from choppy framerate, collision detection issues, and bad voice acting during the gameplay...

Always loved that the PS1 port had unlockable alternate colors. It's a small but appreciated addition.
Genesis port still rocks too, though. It and Ghouls & Ghosts being as good as they are there is still impressive. Great video!

I expected to see a lazy Atari ST port on the Amiga, but was pleasantly surprised to see it got it's own version with smooth scrolling and sprites. It still could have been better and shame it didn't have better mechanics.

    • @JustJamie1983
      @JustJamie1983  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Because this game was pretty much developed on an x68000. It would be putting arcade VS arcade...kinda pointless.

Not really, hardware specs are quit different between X68K and CPS-1, and the X68K version is not arcarde perfect, even if it is very close indeed (black bar ont the top, missing all stars on the first level, some flickering on big sprites).

I had the Genesis port, and that was plenty good for me. The PC Engine CD port is pretty impressive with the added cutscenes and audio improvements, but it lacks the layers of parallax.
At this point if you are including the later releases like the PSP and PS1/PSX version, you might as well include the Sharp X68000.
Is it an expensive computer for it's time? Yes
Was it used as development machine for some titles back then? Again, yes.
Here's the thing; some people bought these expensive platforms for gaming. The Neo Geo was notoriously expensive but you were playing it's arcade titles at home. I knew people that picked up the 3DO, that was around $700 at launch back then. Heck I picked up the Genesis(at launch), Sega CD(at launch) and 32X (at launch), that adds up to $650.
The Sharp X68000 is an expensive computer with custom hardware, it SHOULD have impressive ports. It doesn't take away from what the consoles of the time did for less entry cost, and often times less power.
I am impressed with how the Genesis comes extremely close to many an X68000 port save for a dip in color, a limitation in memory and storage, or lacking specific hardware abilities (sprite scaling, better audio chip)...
I am impressed how many PC-Engine titles punch above it's weight class.
I am also impressed by how many of these games are even attempted on those 8 bit micros.

Hmmm, I would agree with some of this, although I personally rank the Genesis/MD version superior to the PC Engine/Turbo Grafx version....again tho, these are personal preferences!! Also not sure I consider the Sony versions as "ports" since it seems they were basically arcade code put into the "collection"!! But again, this is all personal preference and you have a great video!!

Just for clarification the X68000 is not identical to the CPS1 Arcade system this originally was made for in the arcades. The hardware is very similar but NOT the same. Many CPS1 - X68000 ports had cut backs like less enemy sprites on screen in Final Fight. It's not like Neo Geo MVS and AES or even Dreamcast and Naomi it's quite different hardware setups.

    • @JustJamie1983
      @JustJamie1983  20 วันที่ผ่านมา

Identical was likely a word of mouth. The X68000 was used to develop many CPS1 games.

I have the pc engine arcade version, it's my favorite version. The extra cinemas, acting and stage says they went above and beyond. Some will disagree. Graphically it takes a slight back seat to the Genesis version which I had first and mastered, but the better orchestral music and extras puts the pc engine arcade card version on top.

The Master System version was done by Tiertex. And anyone familiar with that company, knows how horrid they were with almost everything they did... including the broken Strider II on the Genesis. So they not only butchered an arcade port (repeatedly on various systems), but they made a shit sequel as well. YAY! The PC Engine version, to me, was so-so. It looked so much worse than the arcade/Genesis versions, and it felt choppier in places as well. It wasn't bad per se, but it wasn't on par with what Capcom did, or with how well SEGA ported it... IMO of course.
As for the Genesis version, myself and a friend of mine way back then, had a small rivalry going. At the time, we were looking forward to a couple of games coming out. For me, it was Thunder Force III. And for him, it was Strider. We would give each other shit about which game was going to get better review scores when they came out. Sadly for me, he won, as Strider got scored higher in just about every game magazine than TF3 (though TF3 got a lot of very high scores as well). So yeah, he won. I also ended up beating TF3 on my first playthrough, so I learned really quickly that the game was very easy. Still played the hell out of it over the years, though. Eventually, I grabbed myself a complete used copy from Gamers (the same store I got Golden Axe at) for something like $25, and played that noticeably tougher game many, many times. It is a great port, and it's clear SEGA really wanted to make it the best they could to give the Genesis a big boost.

I think the NES game is severely underrated. It felt like a proto-Metroidvania. I used to be fascinated by it as a kid because it felt so mysterious and full of secrets. I do like the arcade version though. Props to the 2014 version as well which is my favorite Strider now.

No, more differrences with the X68K than PS1 vs arcade. Missings stars on the first level, black bar on the top of the screen, and flickering (first giant robot on the stage 2).
X68K is closer to the Supergraphx than cps-1 technically speaking…

Ive tried so many times to get into this game because its one of those quintessential Genesis/mega drive games that you are supposed to love, but I just cant get into it. I agree that when it came out if I would have seen it I would have been blown away by the graphics for a home console. My first console was a Genesis but that was in 94 so Strider wasnt really a thing anymore. thanks for the video!

I hated the SMS version so badly. Slow, clunky, short, music was terrible...wasted $15 back in the day. Boy did I regret getting this. I had to force myself to finish it!

Amiga version was very bad, there were huge parts missing from the arcade version and the gameplay was much much slower than what u recorded from emulator.

Which parts of the arcade version was missing? Has it been recovered or something?

The final Amiga level ends with an anticlimactic rematch against the robot gorilla.
The final boss fight simply doesn't exist.
Also missing are the robot panther, the brontosaurus ride, and a reverse gravity flip.
But this applies to all UK micro versions.
Random trivia: the Spectrum game simplified the levels to minimize loading and keep the large size of the levels at a good speed. Everything was done with an eye towards playability over graphics, in contrast to the C64 version, where the goal was simply to push sprites as far as they could go, and the gameplay was a secondary concern.
Because US Gold wanted all these ports out as close as possible, there simply wasn't time to add much balance or even really finish the ports before release.

@@JustJamie1983 the other guy answered thoroughly, at a first glance if u play just the first minutes of the game it can look like a slow but decent conversion but as u go on in the game it starts to get really disappointing.
I loved strider in the arcade and I was so sad with this amiga conversion, I didn't own a megadrive at the time that one was truly a great conversion.

Unfair is not including the x68000.... It s the Neo geo of japanese computers... It s of the same age of the Amiga... and would be nice to see it against the megadrive version (All Motorola 68000 machines)
