  • The galaxy is the Emperor's, and anyone or anything who challenges that claim is an enemy who must be destroyed. In this tutorial, we show you how to paint the most loyal of Astartes Chapters, The Black Templars for Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop. The miniatures is one of the new Primaris Crusaders Marines and are packed full of Black Templar Iconography and details. We show you how to approach painting Black Space Marine Power Armour including how to get a great edge highlight, which is quite a challenge with black. We also teach you how to paint the white pauldrons as well as all the other Grimdark 40K details that make the Black templars so awesome. Enjoy 😊

Every white paint I've received from Games Workshop has come all clumped up and thick. Once way you can 'fix' this is by getting like a bottle of airbrush thinner. Put some in the pot and mix. if it's still too thick, add a little more. Keep doing so until its a consistency you'd like to work with. Obviously be careful of adding too much otherwise it might get too thin.

    Great tutorial, Duncster, as always!
One thing I have always had a lot of issue with that seems very silly but has cost me a few brushes already would be how you go about cleaning and generally treating your brushes right. Just washing them out in your bucket of painting water rarely gets them properly and easily clean and tends to catch pigments too far up the bristles and ruining the point long-term. Always replacing the water after every paint is obviously also not a realistic option, so how to go about cleaning them up mid-paintjob?

    • @alphariusomegon6711
      @alphariusomegon6711 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I know I'm not the intended recipient, but I have a method that works fairly well and has kept most of my expensive detail brushes in good shape.
I tend go go and give them a eash every 30 minutes or so when painting. Running, warm water is best, and just give the bristles a gentle flicking while wetting them. I have found that this helps keep my brushes feeling soft and staying in form for longer.
For larger brushes, say the kind you might use for washes, you can get away with less washing and still keep them in good shape.
      Hope this helps, cheers mate!

    Coating
Base colors (up to 2 layers)
color wash (basically extra diluted paint for shading)
-the deep black armor does not need it, but for other matte areas (such as the joints), a dark gray wash could help
Layering (using the base colors, clean up the color wash and add highlights)
Highlights (using a lighter version of the area ur highlighting, gently brush the edges. Up to 3 layers or more depending on the level of detail wanted, highlighting the highlight and so on)
-for the black armor, a blueish highlight may help making the deep obscure colors stand out
-detailing at some areas with a light gray
    Detailing (similar to edge highlighting)
-think of the material ur highlighting. Is it metal? Fabric?
-pay attention to the eyes or other light emitting areas

Been prepping to start a Black Templar army and this is definitely the color scheme I’m going to use. Looks just stunning and not as tedious to do on multiple models. Great video and very clear instructions

question could i replace dawnstone with eshin grey , or would that risk making the highlight look odd , alternatively is there a diffrent colour i could use besides those two

Shouldn’t you gloss coat the miniature before applying washes? How come it’s not staining the base layer?

Grimdark Compendium did their version of Black Templars. As much as I love his work, his version failed. His black was blue IMO. Midnight clad it shouldn't be. Grey scale it should.

    Duncan,
What is your view of using a blue-black for the base 'black' colour, in order to give the armour a bit of a different feel/ to link the blue highlights?
I'm considering doing a Kantor blue, Abaddon black 1:1 for a Deathwatch armour.

So whats the actual time it took to complete this. Like im VERY new i know my stuff isnt going to look like this but to get something like this for 1 mini is this an entire weekend or is this like 10 hours of work. and how should i be painting my Mini's 1 at a time or get them all to a made and covered in black then shoulder pads???
This shits hard but i do enjoy that it unlocks a side of me that in 27 years of life ive never really done.

For us, as we have painted a lot of these, it's less than a day, maybe 5 -6 hours to this standard. Remember though, you can follow along and don't do all the highlighting parts (longest stages by a mile). Then you can knock one out in a couple hours. If you want to paint a squad then set up a production line and do one stage on all of them then cycle through that way.

Just wanted to thank you for this video, as well as others on your channel, for helping me get my black templar army started. I used to paint old world warhammer minis as a kid (with rough results), and watching your videos now motivated me to shake the rust off, learn some new techniques and get the BTs to a state I can be happy with. Cheers!

Awesome Video. Thank you! Black templar are my first army and I like your take on them the best. Can anyone tell me if I have to use varnish for such a dark color scheme? I'm a total beginner and a little bit lost

I love that even though you have your own paint line. Your using paints from army painter and citadel. It really shows these as suggestions and not blatent product placement. *cough* warhammertv *cough*
