  • @rosiemott

    Another excellent video. Love your consistently clear and thorough explanations.
    As a Design and Technology teacher I feel the need to say you *could* let your pilot holes be a bit narrower than the width of your screw threads, which would add grip on the first half of your joint too, and *technichaly* your pilot holes could also go into the second piece of wood to really prevent splitting (this would definitely need to be narrower to get good thread traction), however eliminating these nuances makes your construction far easier to complete *and* much easier to explain on TH-cam, so I wholeheartedly approve!
    Good work explaining the countersink clearly, it's a very useful tool and ensures a good finish ☺️ (I'm often too lazy to bother finding mine, and I ALWAYS regret it!)
    Another excellent video. Have a very Merry Christmas xxx

I adopted a new Syrian boy now, his name is Gus, and although Ember will never leave my heart, he's definitely helping me mend it. Anyway, you inspired me to make my rodents' (I have gerbils too) lives the most enriching and exciting, and for that I have had multiple happy fur babies. Hey! Question here! In the video u stated the whole solid pine wood is fine and safe as long as it's not the shavings? Does that apply to cedar as well?
    I have an wooden enclosure that used to be for storage and I posted it on a hamster group and the moderator said he husband noticed it's made of cedar and that's bad and unsafe.

    • @SomethingAnimal
      @SomethingAnimal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest I have no idea if solid cedar can be used since the risks of pine vs cedar are a little different. Pine shavings are considered safe in some countries because of the way local laws require them to be processed (eg pine shavings from Germany and the UK kiln-dried are safe), but cedar shavings are considered as unsafe everywhere regardless of how they are processed, so it's possible that cedar is just inherently unsafe for rodents. I really don't know though and there doesn't seem to be much information online to help me form a confident opinion. I think I would personally avoid cedar just because I don't know enough about it to feel safe, but ultimately the judgement call is up to you as to whether you feel comfortable using that enclosure :)

    I'm so excited for you! Hopefully this one won't be a ghost hamster! Does acrylic resin bind to wood? Bruno (on my pfp) is on his 3rd multichamber hide because he pees on the inside walls and it totally saturates the wood. I tried a varnish and I've tried glue, but the varnish made lots of little bumps and pores, and the glue peeled off. I thought if I cover the walls with a layer of liquid acrylic, it'll make it waterproof? Or am I dumb?

    • @nimbob19
      @nimbob19 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      aquarium wood sealant is pet safe and waterproof! just lather on a few thin layers (letting them dry in between) and make sure its evenly spread :)

    BTW completely unrelated perhaps, but may be something that's worth discussing:
    How do you get started regarding getting in contact with reputable breeders? I am currently not in a state to adopt a hamster, but as soon as I've personally moved to Wales, me and my partner intent to get a hamster as our first pet. I've been binching information regarding good enclosure, food, enrichments, health, etc. But all I know is: don't buy petstore hamsters.
