I'm trying to repurpose a MASSIVE rabbit hutch into a hamster cage. The ledges that supported the barred top are prefect for putting acrylic sheets into. I won't be going with glass, as glass can break, not because of the hamster of course, but because of other things, like accidentally hitting it with something...lol. Like how I accidentally busted a fish tank with a very heavy bronze floor candle holder...lol. The tank was empty, don't worry! :) I wish IKEA wasn't so dastardly with their shipping costs, because that's what stopped me going this route.. No way am I paying nearly 300USD in shipping when IKEA is only 58 miles from my home. But, I guess I was going bigger when thinking of using the same table tops, as they have two sizes, so I was going to get two of the larger for the bottom and the back, and two of the smaller for the sides and do the front in acrylic.

This enclosure is amazing! You honestly bewilder me everytime you make anything - even the funny hamster toy challenges! Maybe it's because I can't understand DIY at all, but I find you so fascinating to watch. I literally love every video you put out and I'm so looking forward to the next one. I can only imagine how heavy that is now and much heavier it will be once the glass is put in! I wish I could DIY things like this. Disability and lack of proper tools makes it impossible. I would be a tornado of DYI otherwise, lol.

In the U.K. I think the guide is min 1000cm2 for Syrian and 800cm2 for a dwarf, I’m really struggling to find a cage this size that’s deep enough too, crazy how inappropriate nose of the cages are! Thank you for your videos of builds I’m going to have a go at making my own with my nephews they really love making things think it will be a fun protect for us. Your videos make me feel like it can do it haha

I've learned so much from you (and Victoria R) He is a russian, Hannibal and his enclosure is 155x 50 cms x 50cms (thats like 62 x 20 inches) I only wish for him to be happy and to have peacefull days
Will the glass front be removable for ease of cleaning? I'm so short I wouldn't be able to lean into it without using a stool and falling. Not a pretty picture for a 66 yr old lady!
WOW I'd low to make something like this for my Egyptian spiny mice one day. How do you clean it though? Obviously you can't just dump it like a bin cage.
Would you think of setting up something where we can purchase these enclosures from you already built lol.. I’d love to do this for my 4 hamsters but I’m no good at DIY and I want them to have the best life, I’ve done all I can but feel like it’s not good enough if that makes sense lol xx
Unfortunately that isn't a possibility due to time/resources, (even if I had those things you'd also need to live here in Cyprus for it to be a viable option). You really don't need to be good at DIY though, I wasn't when I started out and it's taken many years of practice and a *lot* of mistakes to get me to this point. The only way you can ever get good at something is through practice and you can't practice if you don't start somewhere! Bin cages are a great starter DIY and it's difficult to go wrong with them, the IKEA Lack is also quite a simple DIY but requires some minor wood cutting. You also don't need power tools DIYs you can use handsaws, hand-drills and other manual tools instead. You could also buy pre-cut raw wood from a supplier (hardware stores usually sell it) and then its just a case of screwing them together to build a box. You don't even need to have a glass front as that's just for human benefit, and if you don't have predatory pets in your home then you don't necessarily need to build a lid either. If you're really interested in making your own enclosures please don't let fear of mistakes hold you back, I promise that no matter what the end result looks like you'll feel so much pride for your own hard work and your hamster will always appreciate having more space and more enrichment :)
Hi Erin, just got back from the vets with Robbie, my winter white, all blew up last night as I've got 2 that live together they are brothers and never had any problems with them living together, just the odd squeak and rolling around stuck together like a 2 tone snowball. Any way Robbie felt the wrath of Pikachu's wrath last night and it was pretty bad , I've got anti- biotics for him but nothing for the soars? Is there anything I can buy from the chemist for him for his sore bum and cuts such and sudacream or any anti-septic cream ? And would you recommend to leave his sand bath out his hospital enclosure, any other tips will help , thankyou x
