I met Joel Klatt at the USC-CO game last fall. He’s even more handsome in person. Caleb is the best college QB I’ve ever seen. Thanks for giving us excellent year round football coverage, Joel. I appreciate you. ✌🏽
I like to use Bill Parcels rules for drafting a QB and apply those every year and though it’s not perfect, it certainly increases your odds of finding the franchise QB. Top 3 are 1) 3 year starter, QBs need to play a lot and see as much as possible. 2) must graduate, your QB must be smart, no dummies! 3) Win 65-70% of his games played, you must have a winner! Bonus 4) no Hollywood types, you need a humble guy who works hard every day. A grinder! You go back and look at the 1st round busts and almost always 1 of those will be the reason. Not fool proof, just increasing your probability.
@@arightscepterYeah thats sound logic but Its why a “project” like Mahomes fell to 15 and landed into the best possible situation for getting proper development. Can’t say that about the rest of QBs, especially Caleb who wants to pick the team he goes to.
It wasn’t that Caleb was stopped initially on the Kansas play, it was that his RB was stopped, and he took it out of his hands, and turned around and got the 1st, one of the craziest plays I have seen lol. And then he balled out against Texas, he’s been on the radar since day one.
Joel, quick question. Which of these 6 guys would you say has the highest potential for being a draft bust? That includes off field issues, deficiencies in their game as well as projected destination.
I'd say Penix or Bo Nix, though I think Penix because of his inability to run, his age, and injury history. Obviously it also has to do with where they are drafted, since your coaching staff and supporting cast can play a huge roll in whether or not you succeed, and we wont know that until draft day. But overall, I'd say probably Penix has the highest % of being a bust
@@hypershadow0615 Oh I 100% agree. I really enjoyed watching both Bo Nix and Penix all year, and I really hope they can succeed at the next level. You can never have too many elite QB's in the NFL
I also agree with your assessment about McCarthy. I think he's very good with the right team. I wish every QB in this class coud just wait a bit before starting. I think they would all ball out.
Caleb Williams does not have a back shoulder throw. Maybe he’s hiding it but he rarely throws it and it’s off when he does. That’s something. He’s also had some character concerns. Many saw him pout on live television, he doesn’t make others better, and they take all the blame. Guys like Penix and JD we only hear how great their cast is but we don’t look at the reverse, like how Penix makes Odunze better or how JD makes Nabers better and so on. CW continues to get every excuse on the planet for his inability to raise his teammates up. The reality is many great QBs raise the level of play of their teammates and not vice versa. If you want an exam of this look no further than Penix. Where was Washington before him? Dumpster fire. How was their QB play? Awful. How was Odunze? Odunze who? Same with Indiana. They were competitive at QB whenever Penix was on the field and incompetent without him. Someone is going to run away with the steal of the draft whoever drafts Penix.
JJ didn’t have to show anything all year. That is a valid point, he also doesn’t have the receiving core as any of the other qbs. The game against penn state doesn’t help him at all. But the running game was insane at Michigan.
What’s wrong with his receiving core? They were all at the top of the country in per play stats, I’m assuming u see they don’t have a ton of yards due to running and think the receivers aren’t good or something😂
The Penn State game probably helps him with NFL teams, it doesn't hurt him. Michigan didn't stop throwing in the second half because they didn't trust JJ, they stopped throwing because every time JJ dropped back he was in danger (and in fact got injured in the first half). Chop Robinson was destroying the Michigan O line that game. Michigan knew they didn't have to risk their QB getting injured with absolutely nothing behind him to win that game because PSU couldn't do anything against the Michigan defense. And JJ was willing to do that to get the win. That level of maturity and team first attitude is going to go over extremely well with NFL decision makers.
The problem with Penix is his short game. His accuracy is not very good 20 yards and shorter, even worse 10 and shorter. That makes him a bit one dimensional. Don’t get me wrong, this dude is incredibly good and is great in an air raid style offense, but having a more all round QB will benefit teams more
@@jca65lb i don't think Daniel's game will translate well to the NFL. He's the QB i think will be a bust though I do think he gets drafted in the 1st round
Bro is overrating JJ and Bo Nix so much. Bo is the ultimate check down guy, can’t be anything more than a role paying qb that is dependent on having a good o line and weapons to not be completely irrelevant. JJ went from a turnover machine to a check down game manager. He never improved, he just stopped being asked to be that guy like they thought he was going to be. They didn’t ask him to do too much, so he didn’t and that makes him a first rounder? He’ll either get to the NFL and be exactly that, too scared to throw the ball down field, or he’ll be a turnover machine again I don’t see anything in between.
@YodaSmokes If I start a podcast I want you to be my first guest. Maybe not top tier first round guys but I do take into account leaving college to being 24/7 locked in to football they can both be Brock Purdy-esc and that's pretty good.
Hey Joel. Love the content I email you every show, big fan. Also a Seahawks fan hoping for a QB in the first this year. Bo Nix is my guy, his final season in CFB was Spectacular and showed he can do it all !
Right, Nix would underthrow DK every route! 😅 Seattle doesn't need a dink and dunk 10 yards passer! They need a QB who can take the top off a defense with a big arm, that would be Michael Penix Jr..
@@troywest7045 some Seahawks fans and Joel believe JJ would be a great fit in Seattle, and JJ doesn’t throw downfield at all. Difference is Bo is a playmaker and can throw the deep ball, you’ve seen him do it Troy Franklin averaged 17 yards a catch. That being said I like Penix too 😂
20-34 343 yards 2td 2ints along with 10 carries 52 yards 1td against TCU. Yes, I am aware he threw 2 pick 6's....but his stat line shows when he needs to air it out he is more than capable. His ability to use his legs also bumps up his stock.
"look at TCU" where he had 400 YFS and 3 TDs and led them back to nearly winning after a 21-3 deficit? The turnovers were absolutely bad- don't get me wrong- but you can point to LITERALLY EVERY qb in this class having a bad turnover game, and many of them happened at 22-23 years old. I mean, it REALLY isn't. Daniels was more accurate, more efficient, made more big plays, threw better and ran better than either of the others (against tougher competition), and tops it off with his maturity, his stellar football IQ and complete lack of off-the-field issues.

JJ is tough but he needs some meat on his bones. I wish him all success.
Penix has glass knees I'd worry about him more

Penix to Seahawks makes to much sense especially with his OC going there.

Lmao!
The Huskies have had stellar offensive lines since the 2022 season.
Go back and look how Huff changed things up to make them better since that year, and go back to see how little sacks they gave up in total, and how Penix thrived.
You’re up in the night pal.
Here is some more info smoothbrain, Straight from the Huskies website:
In 2022, Huff helped return the UW offense to its highest heighths, Washington led the nation in both passing offense (369.8 yards per game) and third-down conversions (57 percent) while also finishing second in total offense (515.8 yards per game). Just one season earlier, Washington finished the season 73rd in pass offense and 114th in total offense.
I guess their O-line was bad in 2022 huh?!
Great content! Best analyst in the game.
What happens if Caleb comes to the combine at 5’11”? I’ve heard several scouts say he’s shorter than advertised. Is he still the number 1 overall talent, if that’s the case?
Bro no chance caleb is 5'11 he is definitely a real 6'1 if you look at him standing next to cj stroud at the award ceremony he's close to his high and cj they have him at 6'3
It didn’t stop Kyler Murray at 5’10”.
He’s definitely not 5’11”.
yes Mahomes looks like he's that size.. i'd project Caleb's upside to be slightly better than Dak depending on how clutch he is.
Who tf cares? You sound like a chick saying she won’t date guys under 6ft. If he can ball he can ball
I really appreciate these breakdowns but I would like to hear a bit more about why certain guys are separated from the others. A sense of limitations, areas to improve, etc.
I just don't understand how NFL talking heads are so blind to recent history. They talk about "off-schedule" plays like it's the only thing that matters. Isn't that what Zach Wilson and Johnny Manziel were "elite" at? Yeesh.
Joel is amazing I love this podcast.
I've seen Maye play, he is the next Sam Howel, Mitch Turbisky.
I don't want to say I think Sam is going to be great, comparing him to guys who have failed for years is apples and oranges. The Commanders were a dumpster fire plenty of blame to go around. Sam was better than anyone the Jets, Steelers, Bears, Pats, Raiders had. At worst Sam will be another Gardner Minshew. Every team needs one of those in today's NFL. How many QBs could have stood up to the beating Sam took.
@@mtc4him201
Wrong. AOC for the Raiders had a higher passer rating.
Absolutely not, Howell is going to be a 10 year starter by the way. Someone is picking him up if Washington passes on a QB. Maye is a 15 year nFL QB he checks every single box
Maye is far superior then both of them. Youre just going off the school they went to and not the talent they are as QB.

As a patriots fan I was so mad we had the 3rd pick because I assumed Maye was going 2nd. And now seeing him play I am so ecstatic with how the draft turned out
I think JJ would be ranked higher if he went to a more pass heavy school. Michigan is very run heavy and JJ still put up some good numbers. I believe if he was at UW or TTU or OU he would be much higher on this list. But as a Mich fan, I LOVE that he chose to play ball for us! Go JJ!!! Go Blue!!!
When asked to pass and not in rhythm in a run based offense, he was fabulous anyway. 3rd down and long conversion machine.
1 or 2.
I haven't seen someone with Caden Williams' confidence since Johnny Manziel or JaMarcus Russell
I hope the draft plays out like this ranking, as a PATS fan i want Daniels because of the dual threat and the lack of talent on the Patriot offense

Funny how Daniels gets docked for having 2 good wrs. Penix has 3 and an amazing rb but GAH he's doing it all himself 😂

Sounds like Bo Nix would be a good fit for this template.
@@arightscepterYeah thats sound logic but Its why a “project” like Mahomes fell to 15 and landed into the best possible situation for getting proper development. It’s all about the right coaching staff and development. Yes the QB needs the intangibles but development and surrounding cast of talent are so important
Please, why not use coach Vince Lombardi's? Oh, that's too old and not relevant? You mean like using ANOTHER very old model like Parcels?!

Can’t say that about the rest of QBs, especially Caleb who wants to pick the team he goes to.
He is a bum.
@@MJCFilms I was thinking Penix too. I certainly hope not, because a league with all of these quarterbacks being successful would be something to see
@@hypershadow0615 Oh I 100% agree. I really enjoyed watching both Bo Nix and Penix all year, and I really hope they can succeed at the next level. You can never have too many elite QB's in the NFL

Love your stuff Klatt - don't listen to negative comments, you are one of the best in the business.
I like JJ still really young to grow more
I also agree with your assessment about McCarthy.
He can throw it! Sometimes in college it’s not needed when you have great wideouts

3 months ago you called it. Way to go. You even called the Broncos on it. KUDOS
Hey Joel, would love to see an off-season show about this topic -
if you had a clean slate, how would you arrange the conferences?
Am I crazy or was Penix not obviously better than every qb besides Caleb? Like is everyone just collectively gaslighting me?
The problem with Penix is his short game. His accuracy is not very good 20 yards and shorter, even worse 10 and shorter. That makes him a bit one dimensional. Don’t get me wrong, this dude is incredibly good and is great in an air raid style offense, but having a more all round QB will benefit teams more

Joel has the best knowledge of these college prospects. He has no clue what the NFL teams are doing.

I just don't understand why Caleb Williams - barely 6' tall and a potential head case - is being ranked ahead of Jayden Daniels who surpasses him by every metric. Drake Maye makes even less sense. Stats last season:
Jayden Daniels - QBR 208.0 (highest in CFB history)
236 of 327 (72.2%) for 3,812 yards (11.7 ypa), 40 TD's and 4 INT's
135 rushes for 1,134 yards (8.4 ypc), 10 TD's.
Caleb Williams - QBR 170.1
266 of 388 (68.6%) for 3,633 yards (9.4 ypa), 30 TD's and 5 INT's
97 rushes for 136 yards (1.4 ypc), 11 TD's
Drake May - QBR 149.0
269 of 425 (63.3%) for 3,608 yards (8.5 ypa), 24 TD's and 9 INT's.
112 rushes for 449 yards (4.0 ypc), 9 TD's
It ain't even close. I mean, it REALLY isn't. Daniels was more accurate, more efficient, made more big plays, threw better and ran better than either of the others (against tougher competition), and tops it off with his maturity, his stellar football IQ and complete lack of off-the-field issues.
