Acclaimed author Arundhati Roy could soon face trial under India's contested "anti-terror" laws in a case that has drawn outrage from free speech advocates in India and beyond. An official from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's far-right ruling Bharatiya Janata Party gave the go-ahead on Friday for Roy's prosecution over comments she made about Kashmir in 2010. This comes as Modi was sworn in last week to his third term as prime minister after the BJP won the most seats in Indian's Parliament, but lost its outright majority. "This case is so convoluted, it's hard to say where it begins and where it ends - and that's the point. The process is the punishment," says Indian author and journalist Siddhartha Deb, who teaches at The New School in New York. Deb says Modi is trying to show that "everything is normal" despite the shocking electoral setback, with the case against Roy being used to placate his "rabid attack dogs of Hindu nationalism."

Similarly in deccan(Hyderabad Nizam)Nawab was muslim and the subjects were hindus, in the case of Hyderabad Sardar Patel took his ministry in confidence and merged the state in India. Many princely states were merged to India. In the case of Harisingh he delayed the merger while Pakistan came to attack him he took help of Indian Army, thats how he took up as Indian state. Even in the eastern Indian states merged in India quite later. Goa from Portugal was taken in 1960.

If you go buy this scholar’s argument, American civil war is won by authoritarian government. South states had every right to go there way and stay separate. All these mentioned states are integral part of India and majority people there participate in Indias elections and select their representatives, even against the threats from separatists to boycott elections. If you have differences with government, engage in the democratic process and choose your way. The gentleman said Kashmiris were not receiving their rights. In fact they had special rights which no other states had and government was pumping money to them but only few politically powerful families controlled it. Recently those special rights were revoked and that’s why all this noise. Kashmir is now any other state in India and people from other states can invest now, ultimately bringing development to this state. If Muslims being majority somewhere is a reason for separatism, being a catholic Christian I have to start worrying about they are increasing the numbers. India hold more Muslims than Pakistan and as far as I know most of them are true Indians. You can oppose BJP and its right wing, pro upper class Hindu politics. But under this umbrella, anti Indian and separatism should not be entertained. That will be a catalyst for more powerful BJP.

First time a video by this channel came up on my feed and I watched it. As a secular Indian I'm not a fan of the current govt but what I find tremendously objectionable in this video is "west looking the other side". Who exactly is the west n the big daddy to comment on affairs within, any country, let alone India. They wage wars indiscriminately without incriminating evidence of any sort, because their highest revenue comes from selling arms and ammunition. Why exactly does anyone need validation from the west esp US, where u can't buy meds otc but can get guns without licenses and hundreds , thousands have been killed in mindless shootings? Zero political, legal and social will to do anything about what's going on in their own country but love to comment on and interfere in other country's matters! Their own handling of the pandemic was so poor . Doctors and nurses living there released videos of all that was going on there and how many died due to sheer negligence apart from the whole anti vax movement. Sorry to burst your bubble but India handled it much better. So it's pure ignorance when someone says that the pandemic was handled badly back here. Look in your own backyard n rectify ! What happened with Roy is shameful and unjust. But Siddharth Deb has just offered a very reductive analysis of Indian politics, because the poor of India are NOT equable with Dalits and untouchables. The problem of class can be transcended if you can generate capital, whereas caste is NOT similarly navigable. There are many poor people in India who vote for Hindu rashtra and many from middle classes who vote against. Just because it is convenient to reduce Indian problems to make it equivalent to Western categories, doesn't mean that leftist discourses need to do that to fight social injustices. This is lazy journalism that fails to pay attention to context and intersectionalities, and reeks unfortunately of Western ignorance.
