Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Arrives in NYC to Fight “Biggest Crisis Humanity Has Ever Faced”

  • Following weeks of anticipation, Swedish climate justice activist Greta Thunberg arrived on the shores of Lower Manhattan Wednesday afternoon after a 15-day voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in an emissions-free yacht. She was welcomed on land by hundreds of supporters at the North Cove Marina. As Thunberg’s yacht sailed over the horizon and past the Statue of Liberty, youth climate activists chanted “The sea levels are rising, and so are we!” and “We are unstoppable! Another world is possible!” The 16-year-old climate activist is kickstarting a months-long tour of the Americas. For her first action, she will be joining New York students climate-striking outside the U.N. Friday morning. She will then take to the streets for a massive climate march in New York City on September 20, followed by two U.N. climate summits here. In December, she will attend the COP25 climate summit in Santiago, Chile. We hear highlights of Greta’s first speech and news conference upon arriving in New York City and speak to her father Svante, as well as New York youth climate activists Alexandria Villaseñor and Xiye Bastida.

    My God. It is terribly sad that young teenagers are spending their time fighting for their future. I'm proud of them all, but wish they could just be kids. Shame on us all.

    Out of the mouth of babes. Greta is a young, powerful climate activist that makes it simple that we need to act now. There is no time to waste. @tinylilmatt We do not agree on a lot of, things I can tell. I don't think there is such a prevalent attitude here. This is a very small and isolated country in a much much larger world. I have traveled most of the world, and to be honest, there is not much that uniquely positive about Swedish culture or mannerism. Things are pretty much similar all over. With that said, there are numerous instances of cultures that have more hospitality and open mindedness. Sweden was largely abandoned during the turn of last century, and upon til then, we had lived on small farms, quite isolated from each other, with much suspicion and distrust among each other. We have not been good at integrating refugees that have come here, we are not very verbal and not very pedagogic. There are lot's of small things, and natural things that I am proud of here, but not these grand things that we pride ourselves on in general.

    • @TheMaxthesis
      @TheMaxthesis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @tinylilmatt I get it, you are afraid of Muslims. Perhaps not realizing that we have the same problems in our culture and populace as the peoples you are referring to. But hey I get it, no one wants trouble at home, and when it comes from "strangers" it is more troubling and it seems like it's all "their" fault. It's a very simplistic take on a much more complicated situation, but again, I get it. All you can do is try your best to be a good human being to all you interact with. Can't judge someone on their heritage or culture or religion. But there will be trouble when large number of people are abused in war and systematic oppression from religious fanatics, and have to move from their homes. Everyone suffers in this life - tough shit.

    If we all ate off small farms, there’d be no more large scale agriculture, which itself would balance the atmosphere.
    How?
    Well, small farms produce much more food per acre - so we’d use a lot less land to farm, allowing native ecosystems to sequester carbon into the unused land.
    Small farms produce food with far fewer units of fuel used per pound of food.
    Small farms sink carbon faster than native ecosystems - large farms burn off thousands of years of stored soil carbon (to atmosphere), and slowly degrade surrounding land.
    Large farms grow large crops, which need distributed far and wide to make a profit (hard to find a local buyer for hundreds of tons of corn all at once). This uses a shitload of energy. Small farms must sell locally.
    When you consider that main sources of fossil fuel are shipping and loss of soil carbon/land degradation, it becomes obvious that farming is the low-hanging fruit (and also traditional construction methods, but that’s a different story. Concrete uses 30% of the worlds fossil fuels and is depleting the world’s building-quality sand).

    I wonder about the wellbeing of someone as strong and determined and young as Greta. She has taken on her shoulders a huge task, and while this is an extraordinary young woman, she is still very vulnerable, and I wonder how naive. She was not as naive as millions of adults to trust that global powers would do anything about the climate crisis without vast pressure, but if the changes that are required to attempt to even mitigate ACC are not successful it will be an enormous psychological blow. Yes, tomitstube, turning depression into action is by far the best response, by far, but Greta at only just 16yrs of age, is in the spotlight, taking on what may be an endless fight against the psychopathic actions of the powerful. This is amidst the race to fend off the impacts of accelerating global warming which is already bringing disaster to numerous areas of the planet with 2 deg of temperature rise already baked into the system, whereby degrees of success will likely be very small. We are not talking about disappointment when someone so young is so utterly committed with such massive momentum and belief behind her. One thing is for sure, if Greta, or someone (most likely another youth (for whom work/money is not a barrier to action), with equal amounts of integrity, passion and commitment, had not taken a stand we would not be witnessing such an uprising. Greta is a truly remarkable young person. I hope she never forgets the courage and fury that begun her journey or that anything she achieves now is a mountain that she herself has climbed.

    I think it's really "convenient" that NONE of these climate warriors ever speaks about HEMP.
    HEMP can make meaningful change, but it's always left out of the conversation

    • @English3Muffin
      @English3Muffin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alex kaneh bosm Honestly, I would imagine that because they are already attacked, mocked, and dismissed that adding yet another controversial topic would likely be a large distractor to the movement. Which is depressing, for sure, but despite more states legalizing marijuana and candidates openly talking about making that federal law, there is still anti-marijuana propaganda. Anyone who talks about how great hemp is is often still largely mocked for being drugged up hippies. I would hate such a vitally important movement to be derailed by a bunch of assholes distracting from the climate change conversation with how silly these pot smoking hippies are to want to use hemp.
      Maybe I’m too cynical, but that’s how I’d see it going down, so I don’t mind them choosing their battles and simply starting the conversation.

      It’s not the girl, she seems great. It’s the policy of misinformation regarding climate changes and causality. She is being use and kids are being brainwashed and no one is aloud to challenge the narrative with contradictory scientific findings. The environment is important but man made CO2 is not a thing. That’s not to say humans don’t pollute the air, especially in densely crowded manufacturing cities, with no place for gasses and particulates to go. And for sure city’s have there own localized climate problems and trap heat because of all the concrete.
      The the Narrative is people are the problem so taxes and the control of the people with Carbon credit system. The fact is the Sun control climate. Accept when the Air Force and Navy are using their well documented weather manipulation equipment...that is definitely man.

    I respect the work Greta is doing, hope that she wins the Nobel Prize, and certainly wish I was as conscientious and as courageous at 16 as she is...however, let's be honest: one 16-year-old Swede, however good she is at raising consciousness, is not going to save the planet. We are already well past the 1.5˚ C pre-industrial revolution threshold, and the situation is only going to get worse in the upcoming decade with the CO2 concentration going up (at least 2 ppm per year) and more endangered species going extinct.
