    I have yet to see anyone else take the precautions you have. Being an electrician myself, I know how little the amperage needs to be to kill any human (one milliampere = one millionth of an ampere). So to see your intelligent manner in preparing these modules is refreshing as I have seen so many people who know just enough about electricity to be dangerously negligent, bordering on disrespect of the potential power with which they handle while taking these batteries apart. They have no clue as to the very real dangers of the amperage they’re handling. Perhaps if they had the opportunity to see the consequences of a single mistake, they would take the necessary precautions you have in this video. So thank you for taking the time to show respect for this power we call electricity = but I look at as the Hand of God Almighty as it has the “power” to take life away and to give it back, in an instant. With regard to a BMS, you might check out jag.35 as this DIY company, has fabricated many BMS in the systems he has offered. Just FYI.

      I'm considering doing a similar setup with Tesla batteries. I had a minor concern when on the fitness mat over the grass. I was thinking some plywood sections over the grass would add another level of safety. I was also thinking something like a plastic carpet runner or large rubber mats over the modules would make things safer. if a high voltage accident were to happen its possible to accidently fall on top of the modules.

      one milliampere is actually one thousannths of an ampere not a millionth. A millionth would be a micro ampere.

    I really like how thin is your wire to the inverter thanks to the high voltage of the battery compared to the the low voltage systems. I wonder though, why there is no water terminals for active cooling. Is it the same system as Nissan leaf?

    • @flyingtools
      @flyingtools  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, the water channels are at the bottom of the battery box. So the whole floor of this battery acts as a cooling plate for the battery modules and the modules are sitting in cooling paste for good heat transfer. You’re not the first one who asking me this so maybe will do a video about just how the cooling system works. Thank you so much for your comment.😊

  • @diyhouse
    @diyhouse ปีที่แล้ว +30

    You don't need insulating earth matts when the battery module has no 'reference to earth'... as long as you don't touch the negative terminal with one hand and the positive with the other,.. you will be fine,.. the old adage of keeping one hand in your pocket,.. has more relevance than you might think...

    Thumbs up 👍🏻, great work!
    Regarding your battery cycling:
    As far as I know, does the balancer only kicks in at max voltage and starts burning energy of peaking cells. In addition it would shut off the whole pack if a battery reaches a critical over or under charge, for safety.
    But I agree if you stick to the very limited voltage range you did your cycling with, it is unlikely to exceed critical voltage rates of a cell even without a balancer, at least for quite a while.

      Make sure you have protection clothes and do an isolation test after you open it.
      I assume that you have the right knowledge to do that. Fist remove the busbar between master bms and Hv+ and then divide the voltage at the “bridge”.
      Then keep on dividing until you are at module voltage.

Hypothetically, could you buy a wrecked car, and run cables to it like you did and use the regular smart chargers to charge it with, and a Solax inverter to drain it when needed? Hello…….your name?
    found your video and it is very interesting that the solax works with the battery. you said you can't share the firmware but what is the name/number of the firmware?. I also use batteries from the id3 but in a 48V system, I built the BMS myself and I use the LTC6803-4 device. I didn't see any protection in your videos, 400v from the battery is no fun and what surprises me a little is the battery input from the Solax is an MC4.... 15000W at 400V is 37.5A 🤔I will buy the same Solax for the next project but with a battery from a BMW i3, this BMS can work with the SimpBMS.

      Hi. How do you make Simp bms to work with those mudules in series? I have a lot of comments about simps bms with those modules but can not find any info about how its done or even if it’s done in series.
      It doesn’t even seems to work to 100% with only one module yet. I have ordered a bms to my battery and will make a video about that later. Btw, it’s not mc4 connectors, they are bigger but looks almost the same. 30 amps is the max current to this unit so the kw depends on your battery voltage. I good thing to know before you start to plan you battery.
      In your case 10,8kw with an i3 battery at full load. The firmware are probably country related with a lot of specific safety regulations so you have to take that with your installer.

    You can use SimpBMS and have it talk to all the can bus slave board, so it replaces the "motherboard" of the battery.
    I am not sure at this point if they can give balancing commands, SimpBMS can do that for Tesla or Mitsubishi boards, but earlier balancing wasn't working yet for VW modules.
    Still, you can connect and see the status of all battery modules, cell voltages and temperatures, and then open or close a relay/contacter, which is already present in the battery.
    Typically there is also a precharge available, but it appears that you don't need it because the Solax has a precharge procedure?

    Great project BUT - my manager's ID.3 just went up in smoke last week. It was parked next to her house, not charging, had not been driven recently, the battery just started smoldering. The fire department came with a big truck with an open container in the back. They put the car in it, drove it to the fire station, put the container on the ground and filled it to the top with water, completely submerging the car.. The car should be taken out today or tomorrow and investigated. It is, of course, a total loss.
    Google "elektrische auto broek op waterland" and click News, and there you can see the car being put in the truck. (Dutch news items)
