Excellent review Ben! I really like the figure, if it was $200, I could justify it, but at $250+ 🤔. @@Benscollectables for me it's that the robot mode looks a little derpy, almost depressed, and mainly due to the head sculpt and the major slopey shoulders look. The only thing I like more about the TT is that the knee engineering is waaay better and proportionate than Phoenix, who suffers from "mid-thigh knee joint" syndrome, which looks bizarre if you bend his legs too much for action poses. Its the one big letdown with that fig. The legs on the TT at least bend where knees usually bend. If TT had a cooler head and face sculpt, maybe slightly less slopey-sad shoulders it would be top.
@@hardsellcomixreviews7514 proportions count. The slopes are too slopey, and the face looks like HP Lovecraft. I don't care about toon accuracy, i care it looks cool. And you mean Jetfire ;)
@@davidcauley9400 he doesn’t look like a macross Valkyrie, so I mean Skyfire. I personally care about tune accuracy because that is what I grew up watching so seeing Skyfire and other autobots who aren’t heroic looking changed to look super heroic defeats the g1 aesthetic for me
I've been noticing something on my two copies of this along with all the reviews I've seen so far and that's with the feet. Even this review seems to have the issue with the left foot at 11:29. On mine, either the left or right foot has a heel that will not open flat by 2 to 3 millimeters. It's not a big deal now but what is causing the problem is that the flat edge on the inside of the heel is hitting the ankle rocker joint along the circular bottom part where the metal pin is inserted. I don't know if that circular plastic piece is a little thick or just not pushed in far enough when the pin is inserted. This isn't an issue in alt mode since the heel is folded into the front of the foot. I'm wondering if the weight of the figure could cause the bottom of the ankle rocker joint or inner part of the heel to crack over time. I thought about shaving down the inside of the heel a tad until it can lay flat.
My biggest issue with Phoenix is the knee joint placement, it looks silly the more you bend the legs. But the MP has a goofy face and a bit smaller, and expensive.
I wish people would stop comparing Phoenix to this guy. You are comparing a figure that came out 8 years ago to a new figure. Phoenix was designed before the dark times. Before the Tooning.
The animation doesn't make characters look the same in every shot. I could see Optimus look like all his toys in different shows. Starscream the same. Sometimes SkyFire looked kind of cheesily drawn like the MP figure and sometimes he looks more stoic like the FT version. I feel like different interpretations are just fine. I am having to cut back on how many I buy, though. So, KO and FT are pretty much all I buy now.
This is an 8 and Phoenix is a 9. I like how the Takara does the chest, but the face kills it for me - it lacks definition and looks like he got stung by cyber bees. The thighs also look a bit thin to me.
Not sure where the obsession with the toon accuracy comes from. 2d low resolution line drawings IMO aren't a good design to build a 3d model from. The reason I liked the MP originally was they were like the original characters were real, detailed like a real robot, but looking like the original character. I'm not a fan of completely flat featureless panels because a low budget cartoon didn't draw any detail.
For me, I tried the realistic look and the figures just felt off. I think the tool figures just give me more nostalgia just bc I grew up on the original show
WHY WILL NO ONE GIVE HIM HIS EARS!!!!! Mine as a kid were broken, so having them unbroken on mine is very important to me, and no one has put out a decent one with the horns atall. SUCKS.. Or am I wrong, and Phoenix has them? If he does, i'll reword my saying to add "that doesn't require a 2nd mortgage" on it. lol

I guess if I liked the toon accuracy, I would probably get this...the ko, not the official
There are way too many Compromises with this figure...Gappy and Belly Floppish Alt mode, too sloped shoulders, hip rachets from titan class, and lastly lack of Premiumness. I'm will wait for a KO with Diecast feet and thighs, better Sping rachets in hips and comes with 8 mini figures for $180.

For me, it's not that it's "too toon", it's that they seemed to have picked the absolute worst animation cell of Him possible. His proportions are so weird, his face looks like melted ice cream, and his inflated chest covers his face from a lot of angles. Phoenix may not be as close to the cartoon, but it's closer to how I think of Skyfire and looks %1000 more premium and cooler. Cheers if you like the Takara, but it's an easy pass for me.
i'd say more than 50% of the cartoon had wonky animation cells. For the toon lovers, part of the appeal (for me at least) is embracing the dedication to capturing the oddities while still making a robot that can turn into a nice looking alternate mode. But that's why it's nice to have so many options for one character
Both FT Phoenix and Siege Jetfire look way better than this guy, it's not even close. This thing is as bad as the "toon" MP Bumblebee... bot modes looking like elementary school drawings. I usually don't trash figures, but wow... there's no justification for how goofy this thing looks. lol
i think to my eye, the more they chase this toon accuracy, the uglier these figures look. the siege version would be great if it had proper MP style hands and wasnt so hallow and gappy like everything hasbro makes. Phoenix is perfect tho
